I'm a photography hobbyist and street photography is one of the genre that I engage in. It is not illegal in Singapore to take pictures of other people in public places and consent from the subject to publish the photo is not needed. There are exceptions and are covered in the CNA article shared above. That guy may be just be a mobile phone street photographer. He may not have mastered the proper etiquette when doing portrait street photography. Don't get me wrong, I understand that he may truly be a creep in this case. I'm just taking the opportunity to create awareness there are genuine street photographers in Singapore and I hope more Singaporeans are more open to street photographers rather than "si-am"when they see a camera pointing at them. You may think you are "average"; street photographers look for "authenticity" and that is GOLD in our eyes. BUT, you can express you are uncomfortable and do not want to be photographed. Don't have to be confrontational, just use gestures (not middle finger pls) and the photographer should nod a move on. I know people may ask why street photography and what is the proper etiquette. I'm too lazy to compile and type so many words so I found a video if you are interested: I do take pictures of children, but I ask permission from their parents/guardians or I explicitly make my intention to take photos known to everyone present before I do so. I may even offer to sent them the photos if I'm confident I got some great shots. I guess I have been tolerated most of the time when doing street photography as I use a somewhat professional camera. You have no idea how much i sigh when I was about to capture a wonderful moment...the subject notices and turn away or dramatically run away. Well...move on to next moment. P.S. In Japan, you cannot take photos of other people in the subway trains. That is a Golden Unwritten Rule.
