Yes, there can be unexpected red flags after joining. For example: You thought that being cute impressed your new employer, and you discover that the company is a studio producing gay porn, and they want you to act. You thought that being cute impressed your new employer, and you discover that they are an escort service and they want you to do services for WOMEN. You thought that being cute impressed your new employer, and you discover that the place is just a front for an insanely promiscuous rich old man. Etc... daydreamingfish

Staff takes MC every week or other week. Cause old staff got a month mc entitlement. Lady work relax relax easy easy when we guys work like hell but still complain tired n always take mc. Smokers got so many smoking breaks, always start work late. Some staff so lazy and auntie got super privileges. Staff got prayers break n half an hr towards d end doing nothing but still lazy as fuck during d rest of d times. Staff cannot do nonhalal things but long after confirmation only say cannot do so we have to cover him in certain aspect but making us have to do everything but still lazy as fuck in other area. Lady do little things complain and we guy have to do more until cannot breath. Little ulcer take mc. Need to work ot complain body pain but go travel no pain. Guest Guest
High staff turnover is a massive red flag. I'm not apprehensive about politics. Politics is everywhere, it is only a question of style - classy, intellectual politics vis a vis a petty juvenile one.
lovehandle
i trust Kimochi's reference of politics would incld juvenile ones but they made a BIG impact! as well as this co. is a monarchy, the emperor listened to his spies ONLY (there is no room for discussion by anyone). in short, the culture is not great, all lopsided. A boss who is soft ear!! who choose to believe in stories, it is best to leave immediately! (do not ever believe that u can be his best story-teller) and turn things around) , one day u shall be the one he asked u to leave While it appeared, that our nation is rich and great, its politicians cannot even handle a 3sen account! (who doesnt know that we have a water agreement, our neighbours knew it at their bottom of their heart but) We cannot even handle the pressure for air/sea and endless tactics by an old grandpa (i think this is truly a joke) Yes, this is a macro-level big impact politics, but i dont think we have handled it well. (we even allow accidents on our seawaters, this is truly NOT acceptable.) by going to tribunal courts, is a path and who doesnt know that? How long are we gonna let this affect us? So b it how juvenile or how classy it is, so long it cuts into a person's career life, then it has an impact badly turnover for changing all lousy stuff : and that is good, but if it is consistently changing staff and there is no improvement at all after so long, something must be wrong

Guest Guest
I do not like office politics. I do not encourage anyone to play politics and I hate it. I will prevent such things from happening by preventing it. I will scan for potential disruptors and sabotage them until they have no chance to recover. I will do this so that others will not have a chance to backstab or play sabotage against me.

Guest Try and see
As someone mentioned above, a high turnover rate is a bad sign. Unfortunately, it's not something that can be detected during the interview session as bosses understandably would try to hide this. When I was in my previous company (I joined in Jan), I befriended a nice auntie in another company down the corridor. She told me that over the years, the people who held my position never lasted more than a year. By Oct that year, I had left. Turned out the boss was a she-devil. Guest Local SMEs
1) At least two camps of colleagues that hated each other like hell. 2) Favouritism was outright obvious 3) Late payment of salary 4) More foreigners than local 5) Boss always missing in action 6) Boss micro-managing staffs all the time 7) No clear cut of responsibilities, company has deep-rooted tai-chi work culture 8) Too many unproductive office meetings 9) Boss has many family members working in the same company - some even get paid with no job responsibility nor needing to work 10) Suppliers kept knocking on doors to chase payments 11) Boss owned too many "companies" within the same premise. 12) Always getting complains from customers 13) High staff turnovers rate within a span of few weeks to half year. 14) Colleagues/Boss surprising temperamental attitudes. 15) Too many phone ringings with nobody bother to answer. Guest self aware
some people play politic, stir shits, bully others but acting angel in front of others as though they are the nice people, act innocent and act as victim. not sure they not aware of it, thick skin or act blur. some people (the man's counterpart) already do so little but still cannot and don't want to do this and that and yet still take so many MC. That's mean they are not fit to do the job. As my senior said, their salary is not that strikingly different from guys, and yet we have to do to all the shits, then why do the company still retain them? West93
Biggest red flags at a workplace? HOOOOO *whistles* Sit down, make yourself comfortable, because I'm gonna pour you all a HUGE mug of tea. I used to work on a contract part-time basis at a certain insurance company that is owned by OCBC (no prizes for guessing what it is). It was by far one of the WORST place I've ever worked, and that's saying a lot because I wasn't even on the frontline selling insurance. Brief description of the job scope: me and 7 other part time contract hires were there to help with their NBU unit to process new insurance plan purchases and do data entry for that. THAT WAS ON PAPER. In reality it was far worse. First red flag started when in the first week of us working there, 8 of us had to share 4 laptops and we didn't even have our own work accounts for the laptops and in-house data entry system. No fixed office either; we were fixed on one floor but we kept being moved around from meeting room to meeting room. Our manager didn't seem to care much about the severe lack of IT resources despite us requesting for 2 whole weeks to get things sorted properly. Then there was the corporate culture there. BY RIGHT the company was advocating work-life balance, so minimal or no OT as much as possible. They even went so far as to deliberately turn off the air conditioning for the entire office block after 6pm to discourage people from working OT, and they'd turn off the Wifi in the building after 9 or 10pm as a further "stick" to make people go back home (ostensibly they did it to backup the system daily as well). However, OT was still mandatory in reality; we were told to copy the fulltime staff working there and bring in our own portable USB fans to keep working after 6pm! There was also a severe disconnect between the sales and the backend support/data department which we worked under. By right the sales agents were supposed to pass in their completed insurance purchase forms twice a week so as not to create a backlog for the data entry and insurance package department (i.e. us). In reality they'd only dump something like 1500 to 2500 caseloads on us on a THURSDAY, and then we'd get slave driven to try and rush everything to completion, WITHOUT MISTAKES, by Friday evening. When we naturally couldn't do that in the span of time left in an official work week, we'd get called back for OT on Saturdays. Not a single day in the work week could we go and even have a vague idea what time we could go home. We knew OT was required of us, but we certainly didn't gamble on the work ethic and timing being so last-minute notice and slipshod as it was. To top it off, our job scope was mainly for data entry and processing. But we kept getting loaned out to other departments such as printing and packaging to help with sending out the insurance booklets and forms to the new customers. All well and good right? WRONG. When they needed help, we had to go help. When WE needed help to cope with the sudden deluges of data entry cases, NOBODY helped. Not even our manager. To take the absolute piss out of us, she would demand we stay and commit OT till 9pm when the Wifi goes down, and yet she'd leave work early at say 7.30pm or 8pm without even signing our timesheets (delegating one of her senior fulltime staff to do it on her behalf). It wasn't even like she had a legitimate reason to leave early; all of us overheard her on the phone discussing with another of her colleagues working on another floor where to go for Ladies' Night drinks! In short, I worked at said insurance company for less than a month before I threw in my resignation. It says a lot about how bad the corporate culture there was when in that one month we worked there, 6 out of 8 of us quit. As for the remaining 2, over the new year the company suddenly decided that they didn't need anymore part time contract hires to help with data entry, so they terminated the three-month contract for the 2 that stuck on with 2 months left on it and they were then also left out of a job. My experience and the red flags I saw there has made me very leery of insurance and banking companies in general, especially in the admin and HR department side of things. There's no surprise why turnover rates in such places are so high, and why there's always job advertisements for them month in and month out on job portals. Guest WorkerBee
My experiences in different coys, 1. First day of work realise about 60% of the workstations are occupied, lunch time found out there was a mass resignation a few weeks back. 2. First day of work seeing/hearing boss shout and shout at staff for 3 hours non-stop, punctuated with vulgarities and abusive remarks. 3. Fourth day of work boss arrange a meeting for me at 9.30 - at night. No transport claim unless after 11pm, company also does not reimburse midnight surcharge. Meal allowance $10 after 8pm but boss bought $5 fish fillet meal for me, so cannot claim.

Don't ever start to accommodate your boss on such timings. (Maybe one exception: you did something wrong in preparation of a work visit of your boss and he needs to discuss prior to his flight.) For me it stands: If I send a whatsapp after office hours, I only expect the response in the next morning. On the food point, your boss should have invited you from the start. Didn't he want the meeting with you and not the other way around? I never let my staff pay on any dinner/lunch meeting. Don't entertain such meeting requests from the start. Even if you are new. The clawback they claim is for audit purpose and they can ask for up to 3 years back, and if you are unable to reproduce the original MC (even if you submitted a signed, endorsed, photocopy of the MC to HR before), they will invalidate your MC and deduct that day's worth from your final check. So far have only encountered 2 good bosses, one retired, the other posted overseas. In the past hardly anyone writes bad reviews on portals, nowadays are different. A boss is a human being too. Don't be too obedient or subordinate. I would want to see the boss who will complain that you didn't respond to him after office hours. The smart boss would maybe call you 3 times when it is really urgent and then send a whatsapp or sms to tell you it is urgent. As I said, next morning he is traveling and wanted to check with you on something important. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tungia te ururua, kia tupu whakaritorito te tupu o te harakeke. Sorry, after 8pm until 8am, I don't respond to any calls from my boss or customers. The same applied during probation. I was never terminated on any job. I advice everyone to tell them to respect your personal life. The boss can call you or message you, but don't expect the other to take the call or to respond instantly. For anyone sending me sms/ whatsapp after office hours, I will reply that I will look into this the next morning directly. I don't understand why you bring up the US here. I am working in Singapore. You just have to tell your boss that you are an employee and not a slave. You had been patient. Probably everybody else would have left much earlier. You're lucky then that your boss respects your space. Dunno y I keep bumping into these people.

Guest Be Brave
I don't know about most people. Personally, I have reached the stage or age where I can confidently, or rather boldly, told the boss off if he tried to disturb me after office hours or even make absurd requests during office hour. I even suggested that he can fire me if he think I am unreasonable. Most of the time, my boss get the message and tried to be nice afterwards. I think because I can't be easily replaced because I am talented and knew my job well.

Good for you, but maybe for now, a few years or maybe even months later circumstances may change and the shoe is suddenly on the other foot and it’ll be back on the job hunt again. We can’t be invulnerable all the time.

bigdanbeam
One ex company i worked for, my immediate superior tried to get me on her side on my very first couple of hours of work. Very distasteful of a leader and reflects a very toxic environment
