The USA caught the PRC in the medal count when their women's basketball team beat Japan for their umpteenth gold in a row and passed them when their women's volleyball team swept Brazil to claim their first gold in history. The USA then lost their last two men's boxing finals, while the PRC lost their last women's boxing final, to close out the closest medal race in years.

PRC websites and social media platforms were bragging all week long about how they were beating the USA in the medal table and how this proves they have surpassed them as the world's greatest country. So many of them then jumped on the bandwagon that it became disgustingly obnoxious. A nation's greatnesss is not determined by spending tax money to train athletes.

i dun see anything wrong with the closing ceremony. most closing ceremonies are boring anyway.

i personally think japan has organised the games well. if not for covid 19, they could have been even better.

Ahhh... it's over.  How nice!   Now I can recall in my mind the images of the men's 10m diving finals,  the men's gymnastics, and forget about all the rest.

Those who are so quick and eager to dismiss the USA as a world power must be disappointed at how strong the power of its athletes is.  113 medals!  Maybe like with the covid vaccines, it should give out free medals to some countries who didn't get any.  I don't see any problem with Singapore receiving one of them.  What would be the best competition for this medal to Singapore ?

Well... we couldn't be there in person anyway, but can only watch it on video.

So, why not treat our eyes to some prior Closing Ceremonies, like:

kinda sad that the olympics is over, have been watching almost everyday and since it's held in asia, there's no time difference issues for viewers.

i think japan has been a great host, the athletes themselves have been praising japan on tiktok. it's really unfortunate that it was met with the covid-19 pandemic and japan wasn't able to fully showcase what it is capable of. guess will be awhile before the olympics will be held in asia again.

They will make that claim anyway but simply use a different event or statistic to "justify" their bragging. It won't be the Olympics, as they had a massive public relations campaign ready to blanket the airwaves and other advertising platforms, but they will merely find something a bit less ubiquitous.

Yeap,  they were trying to include medals won by HK and Taiwan under China, then they are the top already,  ha....

Just some follow-up to the discussion of how East & Southeast Asian delegations did in the medal count. South Korea took 6 golds, 4 silvers, and 10 bronzes for an overall total of 20 medals.

16 6 4 10 20

Taiwan Island claimed 2 golds, 4 silvers, and 6 bronzes for an overall total of 12 medals. Golds were garnered by Lee Yang & Wang Chi-Lin in badminton's men's doubles category and women's weightlifter Kuo Hsing-Chun.

34 2 4 6 12

India wound up with 1 gold, 2 silvers, and 4 bronzes for an overall total of 7 medals. The gold came from Neeraj Chopra winning the men's javelin which is the country's first time to top the podium in a track & field event. Silvers were won in men's wrestling and women's weightlifting. The bronzes came courtesy of P.V. Sindhu in women's badminton, the men's field hockey team, a men's wrestler, and a women's boxer.

48 1 2 4 7

The Hong Kong SAR captured 1 gold, 2 silvers, and 3 bronzes for an overall total of 6 medals. Fencer Cheung Ka-Long's victory in the men's individual foil gave them their gold, which some PRC bloggers are now trying to claim means the PRC actually tied the USA for the most gold medals, while ignoring that the same "reasoning" also means the American colony of Puerto Rico's gold medal in the women's 100 meter hurdles could likewise be added to the USA's total, especially since the winner was actually born and raised in South Carolina, leaving the final order of the medal count unchanged. LOL. Hong Kong's silvers came from a women's swimmer while the bronzes were added via women's karate, women's track cycling, and the women's table tennis team event.

49 1 2 3 6

The Philippines earned 1 gold, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze for an overall total of 4 medals. Women's weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won the country's first-ever gold in any event, while the silvers came from men's and women's boxers, with another men's boxer adding the bronze.

50 1 2 1 4

Indonesia picked up 1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronzes for an overall total of 5 medals. The gold came when Greysia Polii & Apriyani Rihayu upset the PRC (who then really had a reason to loudly scream "fuck me" at the top of their lungs) in badminton's women's doubles final, with a men's weightlifter contributing the silver, and the bronzes bagged by Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in badminton's men's singles division as well as men's and women's weightlifters.

55 1 1 3 5

Thailand collected 1 gold and 1 silver for an overall total of 2 medals. Women's weightlifter Panipak Wongpattanakit was responsible for the gold while women's boxer Sudaporn Seesondee laid claim to the bronze.

59 1 0 1 2

Mongolia grabbed 1 silver and 3 bronzes for an overall total of 4 medals. The silver was snagged by men's judo's multi-time Grand Prix and Grand Slam winner Saeid Mollaei, while the bronzes were thrown in by other men's and women's judo competitors, along with a women's wrestler.

71 0 1 3 4

As for our neighbors to the north, well, Malaysia tallied 1 silver and 1 bronze for an overall total of 2 medals. The silver was reeled in by Awang Mo Azizulhasni in track cycling's men's keirin final while Aaron Chia & Soh Wooi Yik nabbed bronze in badminton's men's doubles tournament.

74 0 1 1 2

Obviously we know by now that Joseph Schooling, the Quah Siblings, Jonathan Chan, and the rest of our athletes did not put Singapore on the podium but I am optimistic about Paris 2024.

Sports school was started in 2004 and after 17 years,  what have been achieved?

JS is not from there and definitely the table tennis team that won medal is not from there too.

Then some may argue SG is a tiny nation but then a lot of tiny nation are high on the medal tally chart.

which tiny nations are high on the medal tally chart?

to be honest the whole southeast asia is just weak in sports. sea games standard is really very low. countries like thailand and indo can win so many medals at sea games but all cannot make it in olympics.

You are right.  Although the Olympics may not be necessary.

I recognize an Asian ass.  And I came in contact with asses as good as this one without any relevance if it was an olympian's ass.   It is so fortunate that this model is very abundant among young Asians!

I agree with you.   There are so many fat, out of shape couch potatoes in America,  yet we got 113 medals.  This comes to about one medal per 2.9 million Americans.   And SG has over 5 million.

So you deserve at least one medal.  :)

For the Philippines's case, we got our first gold medal after almost 100 years (we joined in 1924 as part of the insular governments under USA similar to Puerto Rico and Guam). The funny thing is, our gold medal winner actually trained in Malaysia and her coach is even from China. There was no support from the government.  She was also even tagged by our government to be part of a group who wants to oust the current president of the Philippines. Imagine, as an athlete, a woman, with no support from the government and also the government is making her stressed for red-tagging her. It's dangerous to be tagged like that in Manila, because you can be a target of vigilante groups by dirty Duterte.

Most of the athlete's from the Philippines train with their own money, they beg for donations from private citizens and private corporations. The only organized sport that has at least a program is boxing but it has not produced a gold. The highest we got in boxing is only silver.

I still do not have high hopes for paris 2024, what can 3 or 4 years do in a government that does not have a comprehensive sports program unlike Singapore and Qatar that even has schools for athletes, we do not have that luxury in Philippines.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics also celebrated our first openly LGBTQIA+ athletes, one in boxing (won a Silver) and one in skateboarding.

Correction, tiny here not in term of size but population, such as:

NZ: 5m

Jamaica: 3m

Norway: 5m

Even HKG, the most comparable competitor to SG in every aspect,  got 6 medals and the list goes on.

Perhaps we focus on the wrong sport? Traditionally, Table-tennis dominated by China, Japan, Badminton dominated by China,  Taiwan,  even Malaysia and Indonesia very strong. Swimming dominated by USA, Australia.

So what is weak in asia? Track and field,  perhaps go africa and import some talents,  sure can get gold in SEA game,  Asian game, commonwealth and Olympic.

i remember i was surprised that back in 2020 elections, there are only 2.6m eligible voters (sg citizens). out of these, some are converted citizens. but of cos the stats do not include those below 21yo.

the rest are foreign talent who are more interested in earning SGD.

the societal culture in SG is just not catered to sporting talent. since young, everyone compete to attend the best schools, fight for a place in unis and get their desired jobs when they enter the workforce. anyone who has dreams of a sports career will also reconsider their choice when they see everyone around them advancing in their lives. its just not conducive for someone to train since young and the sad truth is you cant just be outstanding in asean but got to be outstanding in the international stage. i guess SG just cant have it all - we are successful as a financial hub and in many areas but got to forego a reputation as a sporting nation.

There are no rules that prohibit Olympic athletes from knitting while resting in between performances.

When I was a little child, my grandmother taught me to knit,  and I liked to do it.  It is soothing, like a meditation of the fingers.   The idea that it is something girlish or gay-ish comes from an old fashioned culture where only women knitted.

If that photo is not from the Olympics (which it almost certainly is not), then you "shared it" to the wrong thread, because this thread is only about the Olympics. Please try to be a responsible poster, stick to the topic, and don't spam this thread with random butt photos from "group chats" all over the internet that have absolutely no relevance to this thread. Thank you very kindly.

You did not mention a few more of Singapore's fellow Southeast Asian neighborhood stragglers who also failed to earn any medals at the Olympics. This means we were also tied for last place with countries like Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Papua New Guinea, Sri LankaTimor Leste, and Vietnam.

It looks like Burmyanmar and North Korea did not even bother participating, while the only Pacific Island nation to claim any medals (obviously not counting Australia & New Zealand) was Fiji, who won the men's rugby sevens for the second straight Olympics while their women's squad ended up in third place.
