Air-con Servicing Recommendations

I assume that you are referring to central air conditioners.   Window units don't require any service, except periodic cleaning of the air filter.

Even central units don't require much service.  The periodic service is also to change the air filter.  As for duct cleaning,  "chemical wash", this is completely unnecessary.  I have been living in an older house for 44 years, always with central air and heating, and its ducts have never been cleaned, without problems. But central units, who have rubber hoses to pass the refrigerant between condenser/compressor and evaporator,  can lose the refrigerant (freon) over time and need to be recharged.  This is not a difficult operation with a set of gauges, and I have done this in the past.  However, due to concerns about the ozone layer, the sale of refrigerant is very restricted in the US, and only service people have a license to buy it.
