Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia): Everything You Need to Know

Tongkat ali is an herbal remedy that has been a part of traditional Southeast Asian medicine for centuries.

It’s often used to treat a variety of ailments, including fevers, erectile dysfunction, and bacterial infections.

Studies suggest that tongkat ali may boost male fertility, relieve stress, and improve body composition, though research in these areas is limited (1Trusted Source, 2Trusted Source, 3Trusted Source).

The European Food Safety Authority issued a warning in 2021 that tongkat ali has the potential to induce DNA damage

May increase testosterone levels

Tongkat ali’s potential to increase testosterone in men with low levels of this primary sex hormone is well known and well documented.

Effects of inadequate testosterone levels include low libido, erectile dysfunction, and in some cases, infertility. Since compounds in tongkat ali may boost low testosterone, it could treat these issues (9Trusted Source, 10Trusted Source, 11Trusted Source).

A 1-month study in 76 older men with low testosterone found that taking 200 mg of tongkat ali extract per day significantly increased levels of this hormone to normal values in over 90% of participants but more extensive research is needed.

According to a 2021 report by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens, a high dose (2,000 mg/kg body weight) of the water-based extract from dried ground tongkat ali may lead to DNA damage of stomach and duodenum tissues. (4Trusted Source)

Because tongkat ali has the potential to cause DNA damage, the panel concluded that the safety of any condition of its use has not been established.

What’s more, an older 2006 study examining the mercury content of 100 tongkat ali supplements from Malaysia found that 26% had levels of mercury higher than the recommended limit (25Trusted Source). Consuming too much mercury can result in mercury poisoning, which is characterized by mood changes, memory problems, and motor skill issues.

It’s unclear whether taking the supplements over longer periods is beneficial and safe.

If you’re interested in taking tongkat ali, consult your healthcare provider to ensure proper safety.

Additionally, keep in mind that some supplements may be contaminated with mercury. Plus, they’re not well regulated and may contain more or less tongkat ali than listed on the label. Look for a reputable brand that has been tested by a third party.

Additionally, those with medical conditions or taking medications should speak to their healthcare provider before taking tongkat ali.

A 2016 reviewTrusted Source on the safety and toxicity of E. longifolia reported that it does not seem to have detrimental effects on sperm in test tubes when the scientists used it in therapeutic doses. However, animal studies show that in higher concentrations, it may be toxic.

The same review concluded that scientists consider E. longifolia safe as long as people do not take it in high doses. The authors recommend taking 200–400 milligramsTrusted Source daily with caution, especially if the person is an older adult.

People who have hormonal cancers should be cautious of taking E. longifolia

Most of them actually contained viagra but are labelled as Tongkat Ali.

The HSA (Health Science Authority) has spotted many of these products that actually contained viagra type of medication...

There have been repeatedly news in the media on those fake men's health products sold here...

17 Nov 2017Almost anything can be fake even tongkat ali comes in two quality, genuine and fake taking the wrong one may do more harm than beneficial...

Beware two products with potent medicinal ingredients, HSA warns

Candy B+ Coffee Extra Power had dangerously high levels of a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction.

HSA also issued a warning about Candy B+ Coffee Extra Power, found to contain over 50 times the usual daily dose of tadalafil, an erectile dysfunction medication. HSA said: "When used without medical supervision, tadalafil can increase risk of stroke and heart attack."

The product was labelled as a "superfood" and claims it contains known herbal ingredients like tongkat ali extract, sky fruit extract and maca powder.

It also carried Good Manufacturing Practice and NSF International logos on its packaging. HSA said: "The misuse of quality certification logos on the product aimed to mislead consumers into thinking that the product is safe and manufactured under high quality standards, but there is no way of verifying if these logos are authentic."

Malaysian coffee that claimed to have Tongkat Ali recalled by US authorities

WASHINGTON (WASHINGTON POST) - Albert Yee said the coffee was everywhere you looked in the densely packed vendor stalls along avenues in Malaysian cities: an instant mix with Tongkat Ali, a natural ingredient similar to what's found in Viagra that helps men with erectile dysfunction. And he wanted a piece of the action.

The FDA announced last week that Yee's company, Texas-based Bestherbs Coffee, is voluntarily recalling all lots of the uniquely spelled "New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee" due to undeclared ingredients, including the chemical called desmethyl carbodenafil and milk

"Desmethyl carbodenafil is structurally similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, an FDA-approved prescription drug for erectile dysfunction," the FDA said in a statement.

The FDA is concerned over its potential to lower blood pressure to "dangerous levels" and interaction with the substance and nitrates found in some prescription drugs like nitroglycerin.

"Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease often take nitrates," the FDA said. It also warned the coffee's unlisted milk ingredient could be dangerous for people with allergies or sensitivities to the product.

In both instances, the sellers advertised the inclusion of Tongkat Ali, the root of a tree found in Malaysian rain forests and distilled to pill form, or concentrated and mixed with coffee or tea. (that was not found inside)...

I don't find it effective

The bark is more effective than the extract in pill form.

Just take one pinky finger's length to boil with honey and tea/coffee, and it'll hit you HARD within an hour of drinking.

Makes you feel horny as well.
