I've been receiving several calls from MOH. Sometimes I ignore. Sometimes I answered. Always talk to a guy in Mandarin. I just say ok ok then i hang up. Is that legit?

These calls are scams.

MOH doesn't call any people, same as the Singapore customs doesn't call people.

MOH has your handphone number from the TraceTogether and only sends sms to your phone.

Lately, these tricksters spoof their number to a "local" number but often the +65 tells you that they actually call from overseas, same as the  weird overseas numbers that they use. Singtel told me that when the number indicates "+65" at start then it is a call originating from overseas.

These calls make rounds in our office and are super annoying. A wave of laughter goes through our office, when such a number calls and then we guess what country the prefix might be...

Worst, when they call you when you are overseas on your handphone...

You are advised to not to take the calls and not to talk to them. Let it ring or reject the call.

Does it start with a +65? If yes probably a scam call.

Yes. If +65 definite overseas caller and likely a scam call as highlighted several times by various media platforms. Local calls will not have +65 attached to caller ID

found this on CNA on the numbers...

If so many people think +65 calls are from scammers, why do some businesses still use them?

08 May 2022

SINGAPORE: Business development manager Chan Si Yong, 29, used to pick up calls from numbers starting with +65 because he thought the Singapore country code meant it was a legitimate local call.

But on every occasion, he would hear an automated voice in heavily accented English saying they were from official businesses or government agencies. He immediately hung up. "It's obviously a scam," he said.

Mr Chan has grown tired of these calls – he used to get them once or twice a month – and now never picks them up. "They always turn out to be fake, so I just gave up on answering them," he added.

The "+" prefix is in fact an anti-scam measure telcos implemented since April 2020 for incoming overseas calls, after overseas scam syndicates spoofed local numbers to get potential victims to pick up.

These scam calls then began showing up with overseas prefixes. So the scammers changed tact and began spoofing numbers to show up with Singapore's country code, "+65".

While many people know better and continue to reject +65 calls, overseas scam calls remain a problem.

The 23,391 scam cases reported in 2021 – making up about half of all crime cases that year – was a 53 per cent jump from the year before. China officials impersonation scams, usually conducted over the phone, also increased by about 70 per cent.

Further complicating matters is the fact that some +65 calls are legitimate.

In July 2021, MP Saktiandi Supaat (PAP-Bishan-Toa Payoh) asked in Parliament if authorities could "limit" +65 scam calls.

Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information Janil Puthucheary responded that the public should not pick up such calls if they are not expecting anyone calling from overseas.

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) will continue to work with telcos to improve how they detect and block suspected scam calls while ensuring "genuine calls" go through, he said.

However:

LEGITIMATE +65 CALLS

Still, it is worth noting that some +65 calls are legitimate.

In May 2021, MP Murali Pillai (PAP-Bukit Batok) asked in Parliament whether IMDA would consider directing telcos to block overseas calls that carry the "misleading" prefix +65, after a "significant increase" in spoofed calls from scammers based overseas.

In response, then-Minister for Communications and Information S Iswaran said in a written reply that IMDA had considered this, but found it "unfeasible" due to legitimate international incoming calls that carry the +65 prefix.

"Such examples include Singapore-based callers who travel overseas and call Singapore using mobile roaming services, as well as overseas call centres of local businesses who hold local numbers for their hotlines," he wrote.

As far as S'pore is concerned, remember that whether it is the MOH, SPF, High Court, etc., if they really need you to assist them with anything, they will call you (without a pre-recorded message) and ask you to go down to their premises, and give you the name of the staff to look for when you are there.

They will never transact anything over the phone. In fact, they won't reveal much over the phone as they would tell you more when they see you.

I know because I ever kena got called down by the police before.

They called my phone and asked me to go down to the station, giving me a date and time, and the name of the IO to look for.

No discussion over the phone, and they won't go down to your house/office to discuss with you. Everything is done in the station.

So if the person on the phone claims to be from the SPF or other government ministry, and start demanding information from you on the spot, you'll know something is wrong.

Once I got a pre-recorded message from "MOH".

I pressed the button to hear the supposed message for me.

Immediately, there was a ringing tone on the other line. Then a guy answered the call and said, "你好, 这里是卫生局," in a very distinct China accent.

I hung up.

I am bored and so I played along. Answered the call, while speaking to the PRC accented operator, covered my phone with anything metallic and hit it. Try it, it’s fun

Anyone tried to "seduce" and "play along" with the scammer guys? 🤔

I actually plan to do that some day.

If a scammer calls me, I'll tell him that I want to meet him in order to fuck him and breed inside his ass, then pass him on to other guys to do the same thing.  😈

The problem is a lot of these scammers are China boys, and I don't know how to say those things in Chinese properly 🤣

A few weeks ago, I went to a friend's place. The condo security post required me to give my name and phone number.

After about half an hour, I got an SMS from a money-lending company, advertising themselves.

Prior to that, I have not had any such SMSes for a long time.

It made me suspect that the security guard is giving out the condo's guests' phone numbers to these companies, for a commission.

That one is scam.

Be careful they even get thru your home line....

All confirmation doses is thru SMSes. That is official.

So for example if you waiting to get your booster right, it is all thru official SMS. No calls from Home or Your Mobile.

During the initial VTL's after border opening there had been calls from officers and not just sms.

They checked if you are staying at the place you indicated and whether you are alone...

Calls were also during the day 4 and day 7 PCR/later ART tests...

Most interesting is it at the office, we have these consecutive numbers, one phone rings, then the next etc etc all the numbers down...

The only worrisome thing is recently that they spoof already to local hp numbers without the +65 in front, the must have got some prepaid cards from Singapore...

I got those before also, the "unclaimed documents from the High Court".

I worked in a law firm before so I know this: if there are important High Court documents for you, they will serve it to you i.e. have a courier hand-deliver them to you.

If they are not that urgent, it will be posted to your home addrese.

The High Court doesn't call people using a pre-recorded message.

What happens if you pretend to be fooled by them and say you're willing to cooperate? What's their endgame here, will they eventually ask you to transfer money?

I'm truly appalled to see stupid people supporting evil regimes like Russia, China and Myanmar.

They think they r so clever using academic whataboutism.

Of course they think they are so safe here that they don't have to worry about really meeting these evils so they can just be callous.

But nowadays with internet and technology, these remote evil can suddenly appear in your own backyard.

Gay apps and Facebook have so much chinese scams. Real cases are now being reported.

I hope some of these stupid people here also eventually meet those evils that they support and get slaughtered like farm animals for their organs otherwise they still pretend these heinous evils are only for others.

Guest goodeye, appreciate your advice and thanks for the crucial information.

Wealthy good Samaritans have been reported to have stepped forward to help pay the ransom for the release of the scammed victims. Some of the victims are still in captivity.

When seeking job overseas, go to proper channels. Avoid offer which seems too good to be true and be wary of ambiguous terms of contract. Double check with relevant sources concerning the company and the employment.

  • G_M changed the title to Waiter tells of job scam ordeal and 'over 1,000 Malaysians' held by syndicate

Actually, I can understand that people fall trap to such syndicates, in particular if they are not very educated or in low paid jobs.

But how can a waiter job in a underdeveloped country like Cambodia have a better pay than in Malaysia? Some warning lights should be blinking...

Also people should know that you would need a work pass if you are a foreigner working in a foreign country... If the other party doesn't ask  you to prepare then something seems fishy...

Anything that sounds much too good (to be true) should keep you alert and do proper checks. It is like these investments that offer 20 - 50% profits...

Most importantly, the authorities should check on the social media accounts offering these jobs. Often other locals have a play in the cheat too. Find them and punish them.

Proceed until 42K

It boggles the mind just trying to understand the thought process. In the end you can only assume its just pure dumb.

I'm not surprise if these money are given to them by the parents or inheritance. Nonetheless, a lot of young kids already own plenty of cash.
