culture differences played the part. some people just did not wants to touch sensitive issue regarding culture. so it is better to ask first.

for example, pinoy, malay, thais has almost the same tan skin tone but has very different cultures. chinese, korean and japanese also has similar skin tones they also has very different cultures too.

in many asian countries, we also categorise ourselves base on cultural differences. like malay, indian, chinese, eurasian etc. in some countries, it is even obvious that the politicians prioritise certain culture groups.

I'm sorry,  but I don't find where is the problem in asking what type of Asian you belong too.   

 

This question for me has only two answers:   attractive and not attractive.  But I would ask it nonetheless to inquire from what region of Asia you come, a question of courtesy, of small talk.

 

I don't know of any difference with an Asian or anyone else asking the same question to a white man.  I get asked this question all the time,  since I have a foreign accent.  So instead of taking offence,  I ask back:  why?  don't you recognize my Texan accent?  And we all laugh.

I usually ask the question in a getting to know each other kind of way and ask, if I can have a guess on which part of Asia they're from.

I've never had anyone take offence,

Replies are usually, 'you'll never get it' or 'I'll give you 3 guesses'.

You are right,  the humor in his comedy is rather hollow.  The first question anyone would ask him is:  "Are you gay?"
