LGBTQ 'EDM' party called off, organisers & venue stakeholder dispute cancellation reasons

Capitol Theatre's operation IMC Group Asia clarifies that it decided to not host the event as the space was left in an extremely bad condition after previous EDM event.

A lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBTQ) event was scheduled for May. 27, 2023, at the Capitol Theatre. However, a statement from the organisers, Slay LA, alleged that the event was cancelled as a stakeholder was "uncomfortable with Slay being a 'gay event'".

The venue management of Capitol Theatre, IMC Group Asia, told TODAY that the event was cancelled as it was an electronic dance music (EDM) event.

Slay LA's statement

Slay LA took to its Instagram on Apr. 20, 2023, to share a statement regarding the "unexpected and sudden termination of [their] venue hire agreement".

The American-based company shared that on Apr. 11, they received a call from IMC Group Asia that the stakeholder of Capitol Theatre, Perennial Holdings, was "uncomfortable with Slay being 'a gay event' and sought reassurance".

Slay LA stated that the team sent an email outlining Slay's "diversity, equality and inclusion objectives" and that several product sponsors supported the event.

In December 2022, Slay LA discussed with IMC Group Asia regarding hiring the venue, and the venue hire agreement was fully executed in March 2023, and full payment was made. Additionally, Slay clarified that the event was a "diverse and inclusive LGBTQ part event that welcomed everyone".

"Despite our assurances, we were informed on Friday, Apr. 14, through phone call and email that our hire agreement was being terminated," Slay LA wrote.

The termination of the venue hire agreement by IMC Group Asia was due to negative feedback from neighbouring tenants, the adjacent hotel and the mosque after a previous EDM event, Don't Let Daddy Know, was held over New Year's Eve in 2022.

Therefore, a decision was made by Perennial Holdings to hold back on any more EDM events indefinitely, said Slay LA.

"We have to state that these concerns were never made known to us at any point in previous correspondences or site visits."

As Slay LA cannot move the event to suitable alternative venues and with a short amount of time to apply for specific licenses, Slay LA decided to cancel the event.

Speaking to Mothership, Slay LA shared that the event would result in a loss of tens of thousands from sponsors as well as potential ticket and food and beverage sales.

In addition, Slay LA stated that the other three scheduled bookings they had with Capitol Theatre for the rest of 2023 had been cancelled, so they need to restart the process of looking for a new venue.

Slay LA disagreed with the reason for the cancellation.

Slay LA said that if the reason was the likely property damage caused by such an event, IMG Group Asia will have known of this issue “months before”.

“Yet, (they) proceeded to issue the agreement, sign off on it and accept payment in March, then weeks before our event, proceeded to terminate it," Slay LA said.

Slay LA also said that they had been offered a full refund.

Previous New Year's Eve EDM event left premises "in extremely bad condition"

IMC Group Asia told TODAY that the firm decided not to hold EDM events at Capitol Theatre in the future after the previous EDM event on New Year's Eve left the space "in an extremely bad condition for which [IMC Group Asia] had to make significant reparations".

"[The cancellation] was solely due to the operational difficulties of doing an EDM event at Capitol Theatre. The venue is not suited for events of this genre of music. It is a venue with a rich history, we prefer not to risk damage to it," IMC Group Asia said to TODAY.

The firm did admit that this change was "not communicated effectively to our venues management team," said a spokesperson.

"We regret this outcome and will improve on our internal communications."

In response to TODAY, Perennial Holdings reiterated that the reason for the cancellation was that the event was an EDM party.

"As the landlord of Capitol Singapore, we uphold a key responsibility to our stakeholders and community to manage the heritage property well," Perennial Holdings said.

This responsibility includes considering the views of their "immediate and surrounding stakeholders" of the religious community in close vicinities, such as the church and mosque.
