i just read through all the three pages in one go.

nobody talked about old age; i guess you guys are still young? like if you are alone, be it here or abroad, who will look after you?  fine if you are healthy and fit, but at some point, when you no longer can walk or even talk, even thought of a retirement home or old folks home or whatever they call it?

do you guys check out the options for this locally or abroad etc?

Young or old, old age and sickness will come in time. If there is a major disability, I think I would be better off gone so no need to worry about old age. What is important is that I have a good life and go without regrets. In any case, my bfsssss are much younger than me .. and I know they will take care of me.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but if you are old and inmobile, an old folks home would be better?

Your last option should be an old folk home.  Community Care apartments may be the best choice if you have a mobile issue but yet want to preserve a minimal degree of privacy and sanity.

did anyone here suggest thailand?

A specific amount of short lease budget BTO for the elderly will prevent you from moving abroad because there is no guarantee that you will be content in a foreign country.   In the past, when Khaw was our health minister,  he encouraged  sick people to move abroad for cheaper care.  Now, you have CDC voucher, Chas cards, budget friendly 2 room flat, GST rebate, and if you manage your spending carefully,  Singapore should be a safe, familiar place for you to retire.

Keep your finger crossed on this one.  I hope your wish came true.

Don't really need to keep my fingers crossed... note that I used "I know" and not "I hope". The trick is to know your bf first before making him your bf .. ie. choose with your mind and not your eyes/heart. That is how my relationships last decades and still going strong

Wow, cheap ah. Me also rent a room in JB there but RM 1.5k monthly, maybe its due to attach toilet in room for privacy & unlimited aircon and wifi. Attach bathroom is best, occasionally got fren come over and light fun together like mutual masturbating. Haha

Can I apply for the East Malaysia MM2H but stay in West Malaysia?

Does anyone know how the government track? By residential address or entry and exit records?

https://www.imi.gov.my/index.php/en/main-services/malaysia-my-second-home-mmh2-en/
https://smm2h.sarawaktourism.com/

A friend recently told me that Sarawak MM2H (S-MM2H) has no requirements for local property purchase. Does any bro has such understanding too?

Where you retire to me is entirely dependent on where you can get medical care. If you are a Singaporean, you can rely on the local poly clinics and general hospitals. If you get MM2H in order to retire in Malaysia, you will need to buy hospitalisation insurance in Malaysia, and it won't be cheap. Likewise, you may think it is cheap to retire in Thailand, but again without health insurance, it won't be feasible and advisable. So no point thinking about retiring in a cheaper location unless you have the appropriate health coverage. My 2 cents here.

Quick sharing with bros.

2 offshore retirement villages outside of SG featured.

1. ReU - Located in heart of KL

2. Vivobene - Located in Chiangmai

Not quite for the mass market. I would say it's targeted at +- upper-middle income level folks (SG standard).

If you have a bigger budget and want assisted-living beyond SG, can take a look.

@myownthingsincethe80s, sharing same sentiments as you. I recall MM2H has gone through a couple of iterations where criteria vastly different from each versions.

I personally use the below reference. Sharing here for everyone to use. Note that SFZ (Forest City) and SEZ's (JB-SEZ?) info may be outdated as there has been some news not long ago (last year I think). Even for SEZ, it's unclear to me if it's specifically referencing JB or a broader area. What's clearer now is the Platinum, Gold and Silver schemes, which all must buy Malaysian property. Different states dictate different minimum property values to be eligible to MM2H. S-MM2H offers a less "expensive" alterative but there's minimum duration you need to stay in Sarawak.

https://officialmm2h.com/revised-mm2h-guidelines/ - Though it says "official", this is managed by a Sdn. Bhd. company.

Feel free to share your question. I am sure if some bros here know, it can be discussed.

thank you for this @Levis

i'm recently retired. considering moving to JB to stretch my retirement $. i still have passive income from renting out my hdb and investments. have been going to JB once a week for massages and groceries and familiarising myself there. some of my aunts and uncles have already moved to JB and renting there. i'm seeing how the mrt will help ease the commuting. but my mind is pretty much set cos price of almost everything is cheaper - housing, medication, entertainment etc.

but what i found out recently is that if singaporeans buy properties overseas, you lose your "privileges" like cdc voucher cos it is considered as a second property. not sure how the government find out. cos my friend bought a house in JB as an investment and he didnt receive his cdc voucher. he then enquire the govt and they said cos he has a property overseas other than his hdb and they consider it as a second property. we are lk shocked like how does the govt know. he didnt even tell people that he has a property overseas.

@Allons-y, you are welcome. Glad you find the info useful.

Many bros here I think are taking or considering taking the same route. This thread is for many to share their experiences of how shuttling between JB and SG is possible or to use MM2H to get a long-term visa to stay in Malaysia. I think earlier contributions share some good insights that are still relevant today I think.

I am not surprised that SG Govt knows. Recall that there are lots of deep governmental collaborations between SG-MY so sharing info on S'poreans getting MY property shouldn't be difficult. You may also be aware that SG-MY Govts have annual leaders' retreat and that has been ongoing for many years. I am sure SG Govt also exchange data on M'sians in SG. You might be surprised that many data are exchanged that are unknown to man-on-the-street. Your sharing is particularly useful for us bros who are seriously considering getting MM2H.

So are we trying to say if one own a hdb and a condo in singapore,  they will also not get the cdc voucher?

Did your friend take up a loan with any bank? Did he transfer money for the purchase? The property developer would have a list of buyer from singapore and so not a secret.

Speaking from personal experience (owning >1 property), this is incorrect.

Aiyah bros, I think nowadays cannot assume overseas property is “invisible” already lah 😅

SG and MY systems are much more connected than before. Between banking transfers, loan applications, legal paperwork, immigration records and even tax reporting standards, there are many possible digital trails. Not surprising if agencies can cross-reference data quietly behind the scenes.

Personally, I feel anyone considering JB retirement or MM2H should plan based on:

  • lifestyle

  • long-term affordability

  • healthcare access

  • visa stability

  • exchange rate comfort

…instead of assuming can “fly under radar”.

I’m also seeing more Singapore retirees exploring JB seriously now — not just because cheaper, but because quality of life can actually be quite good if choose the right area and maintain SG ties. Especially with RTS link coming, the psychological distance between SG and JB becoming much smaller.

That said, important to separate:

  • owning overseas property
    vs

  • eligibility for specific SG benefits

Sometimes people mix these together and assumptions spread very fast in forums 😄 Better to verify directly with official agencies before making conclusions.

For me personally, renting first in JB before buying still seems like the most sensible “soft landing” approach for retirees. Get familiar with:

  • medical system

  • traffic

  • neighbourhood vibes

  • daily routine

  • border crossing fatigue

Then only decide whether property ownership really makes sense long-term.

Interesting read from everyone, here's my 5 cents worth:

Consider retirement in phases:

40-50 likely healthy, can try living in diff places, rent only, compare

50-60 maybe healthy still, can try renting 1 yr in your fav city, extend if like

60-70 may have health issues, once prob starts, better come back sg n use your medishield

70-80 better to rely on sg system to take care of you n bury you

If you have parents to take care of, don't even think, not fair for them

A gay retirement village would be nice, haven't seen any, but bkk is full of gays

Personally, I don't think msia is too gay friendly.

but that is assuming u can work in these places to rent and live there legally and if it is practical to do so
