Morning wood (nocturnal penile tumescence) tends to become less frequent and less firm with age, but its complete absence is not an inevitable part of healthy aging.

Why it diminishes:

· Hormonal changes: Testosterone peaks in the early morning and naturally declines gradually after age 30–40.

· Less deep sleep: Older men spend less time in REM sleep, where most nighttime erections occur.

· Vascular changes: Arteries can become less elastic, affecting blood flow.

· Medications: Antidepressants, blood pressure drugs, and others common in middle age can reduce erectile function.

Typical timeline:

· Teens to 30s: Very frequent (most mornings).

· 40s–50s: Noticeable decline; may occur 2–3x/week.

· 60s and beyond: Less frequent and rigid; some men may rarely experience it.

Important clinical takeaway: While diminished morning wood is normal with age, its complete and persistent absence, especially if accompanied by erectile dysfunction during sex, warrants a medical checkup. It can be an early sign of underlying issues like low testosterone, diabetes, heart disease, or nerve damage.

This morning and every morning, I'm 56 this year. Is this considered abnormal if based on the above?

At 56, having morning erections every morning is normal and a healthy sign of good vascular and nerve function. What you're experiencing is not considered abnormal, in fact, many doctors would view it as a positive indicator of sexual health.

just woke up with one. A consistent, total lack of NPT can be an early sign of physical erectile dysfunction (ED), or underlying health issues. Pls go to a urologist.

Morning wood depends on healthy blood flow, nerve function, and testosterone.

If you had it this morning, your physical equipment is likely working fine. A single morning without one is completely normal - stress, poor sleep, alcohol, or even a full bladder can affect it.

The key question: is this a new, persistent pattern (many mornings in a row without), or just today?

If it's just today → nothing to worry about.

If it's been weeks/months without and today is the first one in a while → that's actually a positive turnaround, but still worth a routine checkup.

Either way, you don't need to rush to a urologist today based on this alone. But if you're over 40, or have diabetes/high blood pressure, a yearly physical with a testosterone check is never a bad idea.
