Clinical Approach To Hair Loss (from National Skin Centre)

http://www.nsc.gov.sg/cgi-bin/WB_ContentGe...=274&gid=53

Thanks for that link and I find this extract useful :

Pharmacological Treatment

Drugs that have been successfully used include minoxidil and finasteride. Spironolactone, an o~ reductase receptor blocker, can be used in women but not in men, because of the risk of gynaecomastia. feminisation and impotence.

Topical minoxidil 5%, which requires a prescription, seems to give better results than 2% lotion: about 15% of patients experience medium regrowth, in 50% further hair loss is prevented and 35% continue to lose hair.

Oral finasteride, (at l mg per day), a potent 5 o~ reductase type 2 inhibitor, achieves stabilisation of hair loss in around 30% of patients, slight regrowth in 30% and medium growth by 2 years of use in a further 30% of cases. The average response period is 4 months and the only important side-effect is loss of libido.

The patient should be warned that there is an abun-dance of bogus treatments. Surgical Surgical options include scalp reduction and hair transplantation.

I've been notti. Started Propecia 15 mths back. Been irregular. Once broke for 3 mths.

But been on it regularly for 4 mths. I do see minor improvements.

The only thing is, it's an addiction, of sorts. You must take it regularly, or the effect stops. Sort of like those breast enlargement medication. You stop, it gets out of your blood, the MPB comes back. And if you are irregular, you WILL decrease the effectiveness when you resume.

As for the libido thingy, in the exact words I told my doc, I got hornier than ever. He was actually worried the medicine wasn't working!

I had this problem too, had been taking propecia but it has some side effect like (drop in sexual desire). NOt a regular on the medication, alas....I had since took a course from this salon Bossin. It good as I really see results. They are friendly and they treat you like a friend even on your first visit. Not so much about their service but rather the treatment. Their uses solution rather than the BJ101, or YNHC where the bush of herbs is patch on your head. The solution is being absorb faster...and their treatment is not really exp. Abt 1.5k for 25 treatment. And i can see from my before after picture...it gd. PM me for more detail if you need, their have brances in orchard bugis and Simei.

Any guys experiencing hair loss and seek treatment from hair saloons eg. YUNNAN, BEIJING 101 etc care to share whether it REALLY WORKS ? I've sought consultation from National Skin Centre and my condition was diagnosed as androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern hair loss and could be inherited and there is NO CURE ! Though I was prescribed some hair lotion - Minoxidili (it doesn't gurantee as well).

As such, hope to hear from brothers here who could recommend some reliable hair treatment saloons.

Is LAO FUO YE trustworthy and any guys have tried their service before ?

I probably can swear that the Dove Hair Fall Therapy shampoo and conditioner work. I used to have alarming hair fall until I change shampoo and conditioner. It is not a total cure but it greatly minimises the problem.

May I recommend something, unique?

If you think its weird, don't try.

Because its just a free advise.

Firstly, buy a glass bottle which comes with a cap or a cork.

About 3-4 days before the full moon, gather rosemary herbs into the bottle.

Then fill it up with either pure rainwater or spring water and cap the bottle. You may use distilled water. Never use mineral water.

With this rosemary and water mixture, place this bottle exposing to the moonlight, and allow it to "moon-tan" 3-4 days under the moonlight, just before the full moon.

This bottle must be kept away somewhere dark, away from the sunlight once the sun rises.

On the full moon itself, pour this rosemary water on affected bald areas, under the full moon.

You need to do these continously for a few months. Few people I recommended claimed hair started growing back on bald areas. But you must be very patient.

This is an old gypsy spell.

Try propecia or proscar to stop further loss and if you are lucky, you may grow some baby hair (please google them to learn more about these pills). Use growell or regain -the only two topical solution with minoxidil in the market. The rest without minoxidil please dont waste your money. dont bother with 2% strength for these 2 brands. Just use 5% strength immediately. I have been using a combination of proscar and regain for the last couple of years and kept my hair. good luck.

you can try this site, quite a lot of info

http://www.seeyourdoctor.com.sg/index.php

I was told by my doc friend, there are few causes of hair loss

- Diet & Stress = no remedy except changing your diet or lifestyle

- oily head = Look for proper shampoo

- Male Pattern Hair Loss = there are only 2 clinically proven treatment, one internal like propecia and the likes, basically propecia slow down testosterone induced DHT (yes on of the side effect is lower libido)the external ones will be minoxidil and the likes (regain etc)

Grooming and It's Effects on Hair Loss

Avoid combing or brushing hair with a fine tooth comb. Hair straightens and detangles much easier when hair is wet. However, the stress on the hair shaft is immense and you could damage your hair considerably by continuing to comb your hair while wet. That also goes for brushing your hair as well.

But do not over brushing or over combing the hair will cause damage to your hair. It might look nice but in reality brushing your hair excessivly could contribute to hair loss.

I have been combining Propecia and Rogaine as recommended by my dermatologist. It works for me. Keep in mind both agents do not stop hair loss 100% but can slow down the process.

Also have a dermatologist check your scalp. Sometimes it could be something else.

Also work with a hair stylist who has experience in helping you minimizing the appearance of hair loss.

Love.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is bad for your hair. SLS is the ingredient in shampoo that has been singled out as the offending culprit. If you use shampoo then you’re drenching your head in SLS – it’s found in over 95 percent of commercial shampoos. SLS is a potent de-greaser, acting as a surfactant, binding to the dirt and gunk on your hair and scalp. After rinsing your hair, the grime is dragged down the plug hole by the SLS. SLS takes no prisoners, dirt is zapped away and your hair is left bright and bouncy. Yet even after rinsing SLS residue may have taken up camp in and on your scalp causing hair loss.

Vitamins you need for healthy hair

1. Vitamin A

Vitamin A has a big part in producing sebum. Without it you'll have dry hair, dandruff and a thick scalp. All of those symptoms could potentially cause you hair loss. First and second hand smoke along with aspirin and some prescription drugs could prevent Vitamin A absorption.

On the other end of the spectrum having too much sebum blocks hair follicles. So overdosing on Vitamin A could actually cause you even more hair loss.

Fortunately it's impossible to over dose on Vitamin A when you get it from food sources. Mango, Oranges, Carrots, Sweet potato and Squash are all good sources of Vitamin A.

2. Vitamin B

The B Vitamins are also a very important part of having healthy hair. All of the B Vitamins help with with hemoglobin which helps the scalp get the oxygen it needs for healthy hair growth. The main B vitamins that you need to focus on for hair growth are Vitamin B-6 and Folic Acid.

Vitamin B-6 is often found in protein rich foods. This kills 2 birds with one stone because both Vitamin B-6 and protein is needed to prevent hair loss. Potatoes, ready to eat cereals, Bananas, Garbanzo beans, Chicken breast, Oatmeal, Pork Loin, and roast beef contain Vitamin B-6.

Folic Acid is found in cooked lentils, collard greens, chickpeas, medium papaya, frozen peas, and boiled asparagus.

3. Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps provide good blood circulation to the scalp by increasing the absorption of oxygen. Ready made cereals, Almonds, Safflower Oil, Corn Oil, Soybean Oil, Turnip greens.

You probably don't have a Vitamin E deficiency but if you do it's most likely caused by an inability to absorb oils and fats. In this case taking a Vitamin E supplement is recommended.

4. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is responsible for the healthy development of collagen which is necessary for strong hair. Vitamin C can be found in Kiwi fruit, Guava, Red sweet peppers and Oranges.

Will taking propecia increase density of hair ?

My doctor says no. Propecia will reduce hair loss as in earlier post mentioned, you may achieve with some fine baby like hair strands after prolong use..

I was obsessed with saving my hair about five years ago when I realized my dad and older brother had (and they still do) more voluminous hair than me. I have tried them all, well almost all. My hairstylist told me that there's a hair pill available in Thailand that guarantees hair growth as validated by his colleagues. Side effect is that not only the head but pubic hair, legs, arms, armpits.. Sounded appealing but realized it's probably hormone growth pill that may cause renal failure.

Now, I can laugh about my thinning patch.

Can u further describe what is the hair pill product from Thailand that helps growth of hair on the head, armpit, arms, legs and pubic ? What's the chemical content ? Product name ? Any website ? Had you used before ? What's the price ?

Sorry, Wasabi, I don't know the name of the product. My hairstylist said it's prescribed by a doctor there who deliberately not name the pill so others cannot replicate his success. I did not try, although I was tempted. Don't want to end up with liver or kidney failure... Sorry not much help here.

I've tried many products and for generic hair loss, you can only slow it down. Reversible process is not common though not impossible, as long as the hair follicles still have roots deep in. Some people experience itchiness, oily scalp, red spots, sensitive scalp. This also leads to hair loss.

I've tried Beijing 101 as well as Minoxidil and many others ... only manage to slow it down. But in the end, I realise that most ingredients are similar and it just depends on which product you choose to use.

There are a few steps that might help sedate a sensitive scalp and perhaps slow down the hair loss.

Step 1: External - Maintain a clean scalp and hair

I would suggest herbal stuff as they are milder and good for sensitive scalp. Use shampoos like Bawang (Anti hair loss or Anti Dandruff), SLS free type like the Australian made (can't recall the name but big bottle) from Watsons (good for sensitive scalp). If you travel to China, get Bawang there together with conditioner for hair loss. They don't sell the conditioner here, yet. They contain herbs good for hair.

Step 2: External - Apply lotions

Use herbal lotions as they are less harsh then minoxidil. Minoxidil only encourages growth of short hairs and base could be a bit oily to some ... you'll look like as if putting hair cream. Try lotions made with certain oils or sebum control type. I use lotion from Bee Choo which is cheap and similar to Bejing 101. I also have other hair tonic to help norish the hair. I use them at different times.

Step 3: External - Treatment

There is Lao Fo Ye, Bejing 101, Yunan but Bee Choo is a popular niche in this market. The herbs are genuine and treatment like Beijing 101 and Yunan but much more affordable. Short hairs like us is only $20+ per treatment. I started going once a week and then reduce to twice a week. It might not grow hair but at least I get my scalp cleaned. But take note, scalp can be stained though is it the herbs which can penetrate. Takes about two days to wash them off.

Step 4: External - The Cut

Short. Simple and neat. Total bald is another option, but I still prefer short while I still have hair. No.1 on the sides and No.2 or trim on the top to keep the head more rounded. A $10 or less cut will do the trick. No need to go to expensive salons to get a short hair cut.

Step 5: External - Herbal dye

If you have white hair, you can try dying them black to have a more 'youthful' look. Look for herbal dyes, better for scalp. I am going to try this one wash herbal dye which is easy to use and not expensive. Suppose of last a month. I bought it from OG.

Step 6: Internal - Take herbal pills

Yes, there is propecia ... unless you are really desperate, it does help. I am not expecting hair growth but just slowing hair loss as I prefer to have less side effects. Hei Shou Wu is one key ingredient. Most of the mixtures for hair loss pills from China are fine, just consume and see if any gets too heaty. If it does, switch to another brand. Currently I am getting someone to purchase the Seven Treasure Pill from Hong Kong which contains one ingredient not found in local combinations. It helps to lower blood pressure since I have and balding sometimes also indicates some underlying problem. But it is a 'yin' pill so helps to cool down my heaty body a bit. Oh, mixtures with Hei Shou Wu also nourish the kidneys and liver which affects our hair too.

Step 7: Internal - Lessen stimulating foods

Chillies. Ya ... it makes the scalp sweats and not good if we are already losing hair. Do watch what you eat and avoid any foods that might stimulate the scalp. As usual, veges and fruits are good for us ... that includes overall health. Dealing with hair loss is not just the scalp but a whole body issue.

It sounds like a lot of work, which it is but once it becomes a habit, it is not that troublesome. I believe we can curb hair loss or slow it down with inexpensive methods. Choose something comfy for your level. We are not rich to have hair implants. :)

Hope my experience of some of the products can help some of you who are facing tough decisions. Feel free to drop me an email if I can help somewhere.

Over many months ... somehow I don't think their services are good at all. Besides, they use to show their awards which are so dated ... and celebrity endorsements ... that eats into the cost ... the only good thing is an initial consultation just to find out ... I rather you try others. I prefer Bee Choo but heard there is also Bossin. Which blends herbs and minoxidil.

Thks Soxite!

Your hv made very good points on how one can reduce hair loss. I agreed with most of them and I would like to add a few comments:

1 Bawang Shampoo might not be as good as advert on TV and other medias, I understand how the Chinese companies package and market their products. Read my previous posting with link on Bawang. My brother brought one and I was unable to find any ingredients label on the bottle. Of cause, if the products work, then by all mean carry on.

2 Soxite is right to say avoiding shampoo with SLS. I am the operator of home-based anti-hair loss treatment, I use only SLS and Paraben free + plant extracts shampoo for my clients which is very mild. SLS is the ingredient commonly found in over 95 percent of commercial shampoos off the shelve. SLS is a potent de-greaser, acting as a surfactant, binding to the dirt and gunk on your hair and scalp. It is probably the most dangerous ingredient used in skin and hair-care products. In the cleaning industry SLS is used in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, car-wash soaps, etc. It is very corrosive and readily attacks greasy surfaces.

We should be cleaning our scalp Not De-greasing!

3 Bee Choo specialised in Henna+Chinese herbs hair dye. My sister is their regular customer, as Soxite mentioned, cost much less then other salons. But I am not aware they treat hair loss too. Herbal Dye costs less and does less harm to our scalp. However, my sis told me she will have dandruff after each visit. Under microscope, I could see small patches of brownish residue on the scalp. I believe is the residues of Bee Choo Chinese herbs. No alarming. I am monitoring her progress.

4 I would recommend my clients to take anti-oxidants and fish oil as food supplement. Antioxidants delay our organ aging process (including our skin and hair follicles), and fish oil contains Omega-3 which is anit-inflammation. DHT in our blood stream reaches our hair follicle and causes a change in the follicle signaling the immune system to attack the follicles like some kind of foreign invader thus causing an inflammatory response.

5 Members may refer to other articles on Foods, Vitamins and Minerals that affect hair on my webpage hairloss.sg

6 Anyone planning to visit YxxNam of Bejingxxx might want to read these articles from a Malaysian Chinese. http://baldmanunited.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html

7 Anyone wish to have a free examination of their scalp condition can contact me or write to me if you have any questions concerning hair loss prevention. You may also visit my webpage http://www.hairloss.sg for more info.

To tyan questions,

"Someone once told me (I can't recall who) that if I wanna stop hair loss and promote hair growth, I should really stop training my chest cos it is obstructing blood from transmitting up thus slowing down hair stimulation. Is it true?"

Poor blood circulation does affect hair grow. Physical training does not obstruction blood flow to your scalp. However, it might increase your male hormone which in term increase the production of DHT. Also, people tends take high proteins foods such as meats after physical workout and that do not good to your hair in long term - increase inflammatory and DHT.

Again, thks Soxite for sharing!

I wish to share my experience with hailine treatment and advise guys to consider before going to the rip-off Yunnam or Beijing101. A bit of myself, I having quiet serious hair drop last year when I washing my hair and this got me real worry. My friend recommended me to try hairline treatment. His HDB home based setup is simple, husband and wife operation, converting a study room into a consultation office equipped with scopes, washing basin at the utility area and the treatment is in the hall. I remember my 1st visit, he spent about 20 min asking me several questions and examining my scale with a microscope. Each session, he will collect and count my hair loss to monitor the result. My hair loss count improved from about 30+ to 10+ strands; this is after about 2.5 months of treatment. Luckily, I live near to Sembawang and am able to receive treatments on a regular basis and that I think is critical. Now I am going 1-2 time per week and hope to get my fur hair grow, keep my fingers crossed. He emphasizes his treatment is to prevent hair loss and then work on growing the fur hair into terminal hair. On that part, I agreed.

On the whole, friendly and attentive, most important to me, affordable! Worth trying out.

Better to see a doctor for assessment. Don't waste money in places like Yun Nam. My mom spent almost 10 over k there and dont dare to go back because the consultant keep pestering her

to renew packages when she still have few k left.

I am taking Propecia and result is quite good. If i am not wrong, there is only 2 recognised medicine

for hair loss.

Your hiar loss could be due to stress also..so really go seek doctor's advice.
