Any help on the hair loss? I dun like the hair loss centres which charge sky high.

yeah, the hair loss salon is doing good business and they charge sky high, now “in-thing” are the "men facial salon" and the "wellness & slimming salon" which also charge super high with their “hard-sell tactic” once you visit them

talking about hair loss, you might consult doctor (GP), i’ve seen before a brochure issued by ‘Dermatological Society of Spore" in one GP clinic stating that doctor also able to give consultation and to advise on what next action to be taken the next ....

Hello..

As for concern for hair loss, there is this pill in the market that is quite effective for hair loss.. Its called PROPECIA. This can available at any Meidcal Clinic/Pharmacy. You can actually see the difference in 2 months' time. However, chances are, you will probably need to consume it for a long period to maintain the hair growth. I was losing quite a bit of hair on my scalp & my frds actually noticed the difference.

Well, I have been on the pill for the last few years & chances are, I will have to eat it for life! Ha! Things we do for vanity.. Also, pls note that the results may vary for individuals. I cant say that this pill can bring u back the "full bodied hair" like before, but at least the hair loss is more controlled for me now.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the information.

I understand that Propecia will reduce your sex drive. Besides, it has to take for life.

So are you still taking? I guess it is not cheap?

Also, can I get it from the pharmacy counter without seeing a doctor and get it prescribed?

Does National Skin Centre help?

I guess hair loss is affecting most men if not all. Sigh.

Guest Testimony

I have been on propecia for about 5 months and I must say that I am pleased with the results. I am also applying minoxidil on my scalp every night after I washed my hair. Both are only prescribed by a clinic. They cost me about $100 each month.

But I must say that the money is well spent compared to my previous attempt with Y N hair centre. I paid an expensive package for 48 sessions. But I didn't see any improvement, in fact worse and bad service each time.

Now, after only 5 months, I am seeing my hair getting thicker and I see lesser hair (about one or two strands now versus more than 10 strands) on my fingers and shoulders whenever I comb my hair.

I have not experienced any downside to my sex drive either.

My advice is to give it a try. My doctor said he would let me know if there are any medical advances to address this problem but for now, propecia combined with minoxidil is the most effective medication to treat male pattern baldness.

"Hair loss" for once I thought you are talking about cock hair.

Nowadays, people don't know or care what kind of shampoo and hair cream they use on their hair. This may be the reason for hair dropping. Next, how to wash your hair is also very important. This is not know by many people. Next how to dry your hair is also equally important. All this above make up to some reason why you are losing your hair.

Firstly know what type of hair you have. example oily, dry, normal, dry tail and oily base or dry base and oily tail. then use the right shampoo.

Next how to use your shampoo. Pour some on your hand and wash it with water. then pour lesser somemore to give your hair a second wash. Next how to dry your hair. hold your towel with both palm and press your hair slowly in between. don't any how rub it hard with towel. Don't use hair dryer.

No, no, no.......... not cock hair but head hair.

Hi guys.. do you all get propecia from your doctors? A cheaper way to get it is to buy proscar which is the 5 mg version of the same ingredient from propecia and then cut out into 4 pieces. Proscar is also only slightly more expensive than propecia.. :)

Anyone here keen to combine orders?

The clinics here charge more than $90 for a box of Propecia (28 tabs). If you are in BKK, go to a reputable pharmacy like Boots or at the pharmarcy counters at the Central Dept Store where each box costs S$65. And if you buy 5 or 6 boxes, you may get a further 10% discount, plus you can claim VAT on your way out of the country. But please check with the pharmacist on the discount. You can also get Proscar there and it actually works out to be cheaper since you can either quarter or half each pill which contain 5 mg of the drug. Each Propecia tab only contains 1 mg, which is what the doctor prescribes per day.

Or go to Guardian in JB where each box of Propecia costs about S$70.

Both BKK and JB pharmacies do not require you to have a doctor's prescription to buy Propecia. I am not sure about Singapore.

This so called PROPECIA is for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in MEN ONLY and should NOT be used by women or children. You might read it in their web:

Hello...

well, i think u might still need prescription/doctor authorisation if u buy in m'sia(i could be wrong). But basically, its cheaper to buy PROSCA as u can stretch 1 month's supply to 4!! ha ha.. a frd recently went to BKK & bought for me. Price went up. (think I paid abt $80 for it now).

In SG, u probably hv to pay $90++ for a pack of propecia. So, to me, since I m paying abt the same price, might as well stretch to 4 mths! ha ha ha

best..

Pardon my ignorance, is the saying "instant noodles are the cause of hair loss" true?

Do we need to pay extra attention to the food we consume (in order to avoid having hair-loss problem), like not to take any food in particular?

Lastly, those Propecia or Prosca, is there any side effects after using them for long term?

Thanks in advance, this thread/forum sure is informative enough to help people like me. =)

Many people said most of the instant noodles contain some monosodium glutamate (or commonly known as Ajinomoto) and this substance would create the 'hair loss', however there are now some instant noodle which doesn't contain monosodium glutamat.

You might read in page 1 of this thread on some useful comments on Propecia.

Thanks for the informative response. So can I say for those people whose hair loss was due to this monosodium glutamate, will stop their problem if they stop (say totally stop) consuming instant noodles (with monosodium glutamate) altogether?

Then if their problem could be eased, will they have their hair grown back? Since it is not a generic problem, but more because of the types of food consumed...

I personally doubt that instant noodles with MSG really caused hair loss. Those are like old wives tales, my mom used tells me. Anyway, you can get lots of MSG laced food everywhere and everyday. Just visit any of the hawker food stall. Chances are they use MSG to enhance the flavour of the food. There are just no scientific proofs to back that MSG causes hair loss. But I do know for a fact that MSG causes you to be thirsty and some people are allergic to MSG.

There are lots of factor in hair loss, I believe one of which is hereditary and aging, the others factors are stress related and of course, there are possibilities that the food you eat.

Just share my experience too.

I wash my hair daily with a normal shampoo.

Several years back, there was a a brand of herbal shampoo that was very well advertised on TV. On one occassion, I borrowed a colleague's shampoo of that brand after our jog session. Smelled pretty good.

I saw that brand on discount at watson and switched shampoo. 2-3 big bottles later, I suddenly realised that there were more hair dropping on the toilet floor. Mistake !!! I switched back to my normal shampoo and the problem abated.

Lesson 1: Good smell shampoo does not mean anything. Just because the advertisement was well make does not mean the product is good either.

Recently I went to cut my hair in a saloon, I usaully do it at Indian barber shop. After the cut he told me that I had oily scalp. Uncheck it may lead to hair loss, he suggested to get a shampoo to treat it. I thought it was a lead-on for him to sell me some new hair products. However he stopped at that. Last week, I bought a oily scalp shampoo. Still monitoring.

Sometimes it is better to take care of your hair before you have to resort to prescription drugs.

That's your guessing too. Anyway, MSG is not good for health too, only doctor can advise the right things on reason. But I tend to agree that MSG might cause many problem in related to hair, split hair, etc.

Guest AboutHairLoss

Very important is to determine the CAUSE of the problem (hair loss in this context) - whether it is hereditary, scalp inflammation, stress etc. National skin centre can do a good examination for you.

Then apply the correct/appropriate solution.

Once my friend asked me to get one hair loss solution for him ($50+). The pharmacist only told me should start with lower strength etc. When my friend opened up the box and read the instructions, it said only effective for hereditary cause, which is not HIS cause. Money wasted.

Wasting money har....is SERIOUS lah.......but NOT AS DEVASTATING AS if you aggravate the hair loss situation and go down the road of no return..........so better diagnose first......

Chinese doc can also help you know. If your hair loss is due to poor body composition, they can prescribe suitable tonic for you......

Good luck and have healthy hair growth.

http://www.seeyourdoctor.com.sg/

explains the most common hair loss causes.

Male Pattern Hair Loss

Male Pattern Hair Loss is the most common type of hair loss in men, affecting 40% of men by age of 40 and about 50% by age 50. The condition begins to occur in some men in their early twenties. Male Pattern Hair Loss is caused by genetic pre-disposition. A man can inherit this trait from his mother or his father. If you are genetically programmed to lose your hair and you do nothing about your hair loss, there is little chance of keeping your hair over the long term.

personally felt that most the commerical hair loss clinics' success factor is planting hair, not solving your hairloss problems.

The following is an extract from a book "Nutrition Almanac".

Healthy hair is dependent on blood quality and circulation, which in turn are dependent on nutrition. ....

Hair is composed primarily of protein.  A deficiency of protein in the diet can result in a temporary change of hair colour and texture, resulting in dull, thin, dry hair.  If the protein deficiency is corrected, the hair will return to its normal condition.

Biotin may promote healthy hair and prevent graying and baldness..... A deficiency of Vitamin A many cause hair to become dull, dry, and lusterless and eventually fall out.  However, an excess of Vitamin A may cause similar problems. ...

Hair loss occurs during stress or when the diet is inadequate in the B Vitamins, especially B6, Biotin, Inositol, Folic Acid, Magnesium, Sulfur, or Zinc.....

The whole section is actually too much to type it out and I have taken the more important points. So, as you see, there are really a lot of things that causes hair loss (including genetically). As such, the issue of hair loss is more complicated than what we think and cannot be solve with a simply Q&A. May want to try some supplements first... if doesn't help, seek professional advice. When the hair is loss, all is loss... Hard to get it growing once the problem is too serious.

Understand from a friend that he went to see a GP and was given some medication. It works. However, stop taking and start dropping.

I was reading Today and there was a medical column on hair loss.

I was contemplating to see a GP on my thinning hair line, but I realised from the article that a potential side effect of the treatment is a lowered libido.

Well, I was begining to wonder if the trade off is worth it. I do JO quite a fair bit (my only form of release at the moment :D )

Perhaps anyone here has some experience can share?

Basically, the treatment is by taking these medication called Propecia. It's supposed to reduce this chemical called DHT that is responsible for hair loss. The thing is, the prolonged usage of this medication, in very rare cases, can cause the loss of sexual urge. I have friends that have taken it before and they said no side effects and were as horny as before... :)

Dear Lonely,

I quote from http://www.propecia.com/finasteride/propec...n/ppi/index.jsp

"....A small number of men experienced certain sexual side effects. These men reported one or more of the following: less desire for sex; difficulty in achieving an erection; and, a decrease in the amount of semen. Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of men. These side effects went away in men who stopped taking PROPECIA. They also disappeared in most men who continued taking PROPECIA..."

Hence, you should not worry because

- less than 2% suffer this negative sexual side effects

- the effect is reversible if you stop it

Ironically, it is said that people who are bald are also hypersex because of high testosterone from their balls which cause baldness. For some, you can be SEXY (horny) with a bald look

The thing is only some people suffered from the side effects of a lowered libido. Not all. So you dun know until you try. ;)

As for the trade off, the choice is yours. No hair or no appetite for sex.

Viagra or Cialis does NOT make you horny... They only allow you to have and maintain an erection when you feel the urge to have sex. If your libido is affected, it means your sex drive is altered and you dun feel like having sex. It does not mean you cannot have or maintain an erection.

Hormone replacement treatment is the treatment for the drop in sex desire/drive but that will counter the hair growth drug...

buaya, it is not that simple the mind can do wonders "mind over matters" If you see one gay is 100% your type(even at that time you are lacking the sex drive due to some medicine you are taking) immediately your brain will sent signal to the all the sexual points in your body and infused them with "happy hormones: endophines. Thus your sex drive return :thumb:

Sex drive, the point I am bringing out is, if your libido is affected, Viagra or Cialis will not help. They only help you erect when you are sexually motivated to.

As to what you mentioned, if your libido, no amount of sexually interesting gay men will make you want to have sex. You will need hormone treatment...

Heard many salons are keen simply to sell their products and made clients sign up for expensive packages. Pls share your experiences.

ABC, before one starts looking for treatment, please know the ABC of hairloss or alopecia first.

A - Assess the causes

B - Be scientific of what works rather than hearsay without evidences to support

C - Consider alternatives (e.g hair weaving, wig, etc)

As far as I know, the following products are evidence-based products

1. http://www.propecia.com/finasteride/propec...sumer/index.jsp

2. http://www.regaine.co.uk/

3. steroidal injection, e.g. kenacort

4. immunotherapy, e.g. squaric acid

5. Hair transplant (last resort)

Each of the above therapy only works for some people. I suggest you seek a dermatologist for professional advices.

Of course if you still prefer alternative therapies, the choice is yours but dont regret.

Actually, some bald men are sexy. By the way, some men who become bald are due to high male hormones in their testicles.

This is always a big problem with the guys..

Here is my advice. The best medicine or cure of ur baldness is the pill callled >> ACCEPTANCE !

Once you have accepted the fact that your hair is dropping, all your fear, worries etc will be gone. And you will enjoy life more insteand of brooding over every single hair (or bunches of hair) that dropped everyday.

Of cos there are cases where hair dropping is due to some illness, diet or use of wrong product that hurts ur scalp. For these types of hair-loss there are treatment and cure for it. However, for the normal male pattern hair-loss, the only tested cure is what Reflection has suggested >>>> Propecia !! YOu should take this once you know that you are dropping hair. Not after u lost all of it. Regaine may help abit but i doubt very much as it is only an external application to stimulate hair growth.

What I strongly do not recommend is , spending thousands of $$$ at those hair treatment saloons. Please don waste your money.. Heard so much complain about them. You will loose more than just your hair at these saloons.

Be LIke Me >>>> SWALLOW THE ACCEPTANCE PILL !! YOU ONLY HAVE TO TAKE IT ONCE !! AND YOUR WHOLE LIFE AFTER TAT WILL CHANGE AND U FEEL SO MUCH BETTER !!

Live A Life, Live it Well. Be Forgiving, All will be Well.

According to the pharmacist, it takes about 2 months to see the effect, and it will get worse before it gets better.

According to the instruction booklet, this is not a cure, hair loss will return after 6 months if the treatment has stopped.

Regaine will promote hair growth.

However it takes couple of months depending on individual.

Also the growth is not the same as your present hair, it is very fine and drops easily.

Not worth the money for those fine little growth, its not thick at all.

Regaine is very expensive. And you have to use it always, once stop, whatever that grows drops.
