Your gadgets don't stop draining power from the mains even after they are switched off, which is why they are called "vampire electricals". Digital Life lists six top e-vampires:

1. DVD Player

A. Monthly consumption = $2.40

B. Monthly consumption = $0.79

2. 20-Inch CRT TV

A. Monthly consumption = $3.72

B. Monthly consumption = $1.12

3. 29-Inch LCD TV

A. Monthly consumption = $2.44

B. Monthly consumption = $1.21

4. Printers

A. Monthly consumption = $5.64

B. Monthly consumption = $3.78

5. 29-Inch Plasma TV

A. Monthly consumption = $4.57

B. Monthly consumption = $3.08

6. Speaker System

A. Monthly consumption = $7.50

B. Monthly consumption = $5.64

A = Device remains plugged in after being turned off

B = Device is unplugged after use

[All figures are based on a daily two hour usage and 22 hour standby time]

Contrary to popular belief, desktop computers do not draw a lot of power when in standby mode. You can save 14 per cent of the power used if the computer is unplugged after it is turned off.
