Can Ps3 Play Pirated Ps2 Games

Hmm this's quite a tough qns, but someone's gonna answer it anyway.

Well Firstly PS3 houses a Blu-Ray drive, which supports DVD, CD-ROM which were employed by PS2 and PSone respectively.

As of today 26th April 2007, the PS3 is not able to play any form of pirated game disc, so if you pop in your God of War 2 pirated disc into it it should not play the game.

Chances are, with the PS3 being a relatively open platform, together with the HDD spaces installed in every single PS3 be it 20GB or 60GB allow the hacker community to develop homebrews just like the PSP to be able to play pirated games. (ISOs...) So just keep your fingers crossed its just a matter of time ;)

How the protection in the PS3 works is that there is a different protection for each generation of backward and current compatibility.

All PS3 games are promised to be REGION FREE, just like the PSP. eg, PAL PS3 can play JPN PS3's Metal Gear Solid 4.

All PS2 games and PS1 games are region locked, so your PAL PS3 can only play PAL PS2 and PS1 games, and not NTSC/J or NTSC/UC games.

Blu-Ray movies are region locked too, but good news is that North America, Japan and South-East Asia are under Region A (or is it 1?) Europe, Aus and India Region B, and lastly East Asia, China and Russia Region C

DVD movies are region locked also. And it's as followed: USA regoin 1, JPN region 2, Asia region 3... blah blah blah

So lets say you buy a local Sg PS3 with warranty, it will be able to play...

ALL PS3 games

NTSC/J PS2 and PSone games

Region A Blu-Ray media (anything other than games)

Region 3 DVD

only original disc for now

note: newer PS3 like the European ones are using software emulation for their backward compatibility while US and JPN PS3 are still using Emotion Engine (PS2 processor) to play the past generation games. so its software vs hardware BC.

IMHO, PS3 with EE installed should be easier to be modded in the future to play pirated software because there're already modchips for EE.
