erection day
I was eating at the famous 'Pungol' Lasi Lemak stall in Hougang and I really thought this stall is really over-rated. The first time I had a takeaway, the rice wasnt fragrant enough and hard, and I would honestly rate the food as pretty average. This time I did sit down for a proper meal and there's nothing to warrant just a long queue there. And I am not even a fastitious eater. I'm sure there are many other supposely famous food stalls that are just not worth queuing up for.
Guest Standards Dropped
Some of the famous stalls that used to deliver sedap food are no longer that good. I would put Yakun kaya toast and Jalan Kayu prata in this category of famous food becoming not famous or even worse infamous!
Guest fm am
Yeah. Yakun kaya toast so sweet. The more I eat, the more I dislike. :yuk:
Asura
about yakun toast..I believe it is still nice (i mean the kaya only hor, the bread i nothing, anyone can do it). The reason it being sweet is probably the diff standard on the person who spread the kaya on the bread, some "nice people" just spread more.Maybe they could do something about the bread and kaya proportion. But than again, for people who had sweet tooth, I guess they like it that much...For me, the price is definately outrageous! My family had been operating coffee shop for 3 generations, and I find the price is really steep, even for today inflation situation. Don't you think so? Quote It's just me.... Guest Guest
I like the way the eggs are done at Yakun. Big runny yummy eggs, done just the way I like it. :thumb: Price can be lower though.

Buaya
I find most food stalls that are rated as 5 star or very popular to be extremely over-rated...The worse I ever had is the Tiong Bahru Zwee Kueh... The chai por is horrible! Too dry and chao dar taste...Same for the Jalan Kayu roti pratas and Ya Kun bread... I tried it once and find nothing special. But dunno why, some times i pass by there, there is always a long queue. In fact, they already started queuing before the stall open. Guest Guest
Yeah. Yakun kaya toast so sweet. The more I eat, the more I dislike. :yuk: I think they say the quality at certain branches are not the same. Some branches quality are better than others. Anyway, I not a fan of their food.
Baloo
haha... the wanton noodles stall at lavender food court...some say they like the 'malaysian country style' taste. ok no problems there for me.but personally, the taste of the wanton noodles there really isn't what my palete is used to where wanton noodles is concerned. There are very many better tasting ones let me list:(1) Marina Square - the foodcourt at 3rd floor (revamped). The wanton noodles there are superb - noodle texture, char siew meat, veg, all good. New price tho: $4(2) Tiong Bahru - opposite the corner of the escalators of the newly renovated market across the road near the 7-11 - The corner coffee shop. Try their roast meats... totally nice... the shrimp dumplings are also A class. so is their black sauce chicken... damn... everything in that stall is nice... go for it! bit i digress.(3) Kiet Sng Kio... (ok not sure of the name but it's BEHIND, not beside, the DSC clinic block. This is also where the original super laksa has moved to... the one beside the DSC is a FAKE... taken over the stall lock stock and barrell... giveaway is the gas fire they use for the laksa soup... original stall uses and still use charcoal fire... but the wanton noodles at the same coffee shop, another ACE.Baloo
Massagee
I find most food stalls that are rated as 5 star or very popular to be extremely over-rated...The worse I ever had is the Tiong Bahru Zwee Kueh... The chai por is horrible! Too dry and chao dar taste...Same for the Jalan Kayu roti pratas and Ya Kun bread... Did you get it from the right stall? There is a brighter, more visible stall which is so trying to steal from the Real McCoy. I still find the original Chwee Kueh wonderful. That being said, it used to be better. The Kueh was so silken in the past, it was impossible to hold it up with the sticks provided.I can complain no end on Yakun. Their HV and Tiong Bahru branches have the sour-est of coffee, an indication it was left over the heat for way too long.I can complain no end on Yakun... Guest LaughingStock
If there is a long queue for certain food and yet you find it overrated, what does it mean?Either the crowd doesnt know how to taste food or you are just too difficult to please Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all
akated
as a hougang-boy, i must say that i grew up on punggol nasi lemak; it's still one of the better ones around to me. fyi, chong pang tried to steal punggol's business about two years ago by opening a rival store two doors away, but was forced to close down due to lack of business. food, like so many other things, is highly subjective; everyone has a different history of culinary knowledge / experience, so it's actually not surprising to find so many varying opinions on food. Asura
I think food is really a subjective topic when it comes to personal choice. I am sure that you might have taste something you think crap, but yet there are people still eating it, worst, long queue even. Not forgeting that all humans are unique and different, our diversity have make us like different taste (just found out my 1 and a half years old nephew don't like sweet food , one would hardly believe), of cause, our upbringing and enviroment plays an important part. And to make matter worst, there is even food politics, where some would openly support a stall cause the person is nice, kind in giving portion, looks cute, etc etc...So long you continue to like what you eat and shun those you think taste horrible, the food industry would still goes on and on and on....
