Yahoo: 5 Reasons Not To Travel To Spore: This Se Asian Country Is One To Avoid

u post just to say this? who cares?

Yup, I did indeed post that post just to say that, and not bothering whether you care or not, which you in fact, did bother about it, and quote my post, and commented on it some more! thanks!

Anyway, my view.

The author is probably slightly bias, in the sense that the author is using her experiences and her own comparison to her own country as a benchmark, or, any other country. In that sense, if we were to use another country to compare with Singapore, we would certainly need to find one that is of similar characteristic as compared to Singapore, with all factors being almost the same, save for one dependent factor.

To compare Singapore, with any other country, would be an unfair comparison.

As far as I can see, it is difficult to compare, so, to each his own!

I wish all foreigners in Singapore feel this way about Sg so that they dun keep flooding into this tiny island. If its so bad why do so many Pinoys and Indians and other Asians come here to live?? Pls go bk to your own countries with the vast lands!

Its not where you are, its whom you are with. Yes..for me its the company the people you are with that makes the surrounding good. Every country has its positive and negative things for us to comment lor..

Its boring only when you want it to be. Anywhere we go,we should accept what it has to offer and enjoy them. When back home here in Singapore we should be glad and happy that we do have quite a few others things that others do not have.

Like a safe place. Clean, transportation is cheaper then some countries, Freedom of speech, and Nice Kopi O to name a few. So enjoy and be happy about it lol..

I think singapore is better than jakarta, way much better instead,

In singapore there is a lot of public space where we can hang out, in jakarta u found nothing than hanging out in shoping mall, and that's super suck for me since I hate shoping area

A lot of interesting place in sing, I'm not a singaporeans and I still found it more interesting, maybe its all about preference, here I found bali is quiet boring since I travel there often, and I don't even interested to spend my holiday at bali.

Maybe there is a lot of countries better, but I think singapore is okay

Singapore is a safe country, has a very good touristical infrastructure, excellent restaurants, and above all some very nice people.

You're from paris, of cos we love you.

Tell that to us again when you are from uganda. You may see a stark difference in treatment and experience.

Singapore is still my top country to visit and I do it at least twice yearly just to spend time eating, visiting and shopping around.  It is the best of all Asian cities to visit.  Love it especially the Garden By the Bay and the UNESCO Botanical Garden.  Sadly I notice over the years,  much rubbish been thrown around along lane ways and shop fronts.  What is the government doing about this littering problem?

The government is trying to encourage more of these problems by allowing even more tourists from China to come through, to the extent they can even use our automated gates system now.

I do not find Singaporeans friendly.

Though the people are not bad people, but generally, many do not like to smile, least would greet you (in the lift) or have small talks.  Everyone economises in their choice of words and remove all niceties in their daily speech.  Many has a very stressed up and unapproachable expression on the face.  It creates a very unfriendly environment.

I know life may not be easy but Singaporeans can surely be better than this and be more adorable, can't they?

u living in utopia or planet earth? I had been to many countries and people do not smile at you 'just like that'. If any overseas visitors asked for assistance, singaporeans will most likely assist. Where are you from? Do people from your country go around and just smile at strangers all the time?

well, most time is not about the place and others, is all about yourself, i not into night life, not into gay pub, dance etc, singapore, hong kong or even malaysia is alright for me, i can enjoy myself even i am alone, boring? A cafe for a cup of coffee and cake, a good book enough to make my day fruitful.

Be fair, I see many other foreigners littering where they congregate apart from people from China e.g. Philipinos, Indonesians, Indians etc.    What is your government doing about littering problems???  Can Singapore still claim to be a clean garden city with what is happening???

Cannot! Smiling in singapore can only mean two things: either i want your money or i want your ass! Being adorable only gets one into bankruptcy or another's tummy here.

The younger generation is friendlier. The more one gets into singaporean rat race society, the more their friendliness shrivers up. Most of our friendliness here are painted on, by ourselves, and mostly the government. The society here is ugly. Heinously high rentals and property prices are killing our culture here and everything. High influx of foreigners only made it much worse. I rather get bombed by terrorists in paris. Lol kidding!

Exactly!

I'm sure not everybody is racist in Singapore (nor in Europe, haha!) ;)

Not just about your race. Singaporeans, even the poor ones are elitist and love rich and western country people. Say you are from paris and people here will literally worship the ground you just stepped on. If you ae from third world poor country, nobody will want to sit next to you in the mrt. Witnessed that on mrt every time. It's the national upbringing resulting in our national attitude. See how those bangla construction workes here are treated like pariahs.

I suppose I should have closed my big mouth...

But this thread is becoming interesting, from a social point of view.

This being said, I met a few Singaporeans who:

- did not know I come from Paris,

- did not know whether I'm rich or not,

- apparently did not want my money nor my c..k,

and kept smiling!

OK, just my small personal experience...

No can of worms is opened. Everyone knows our country citizens are shallow and obsessed with appearances. Look at the branded items everyone carries here.

You must look somewhat appealing to those singaporeans, it must either be your status expressed by your body language and decorations, looks or both.

I don't mind the racism in Singapore. It's the same everywhere. You go to Washington, London or Paris where everyone looks down on Blacks. In Paris they happen to be Muslims too.

The Gov has done a lot to make Singapore look like a theme park for the tourists. It's a small place and it needs to attract the tourists because tourism money is easy money and every knows tourism can bring in lots lots lots of dollars if well managed.

Now about the laws and regulations, they are enforced, believe me.... my friend and colleague got fined the first week he moved here. He's white, in his mid 30s. He basically crossed Orchard Rd at 1am on a weekday, when the traffic light was red. He was a pedestrian and there was no cars in sight.... well he got caught red handed and had to pay.... $1000!!!!

Another friend, she's Asian, threw a piece of paper on the floor at Paragon and got fined $60....

It's good that Singgov is investing money in such things. It's not just for tourists but it's also for locals too!

The laws are draconian and strict but I agree with fining people for littering. Singapore is very clean! But the pedestrian thing is going too far! If he's walking across a road and no cars are around then he should be let off.

1.  About being boring.  Coincidentally, someone on my FB was complaining about the same thing and I think he's doing the visa run too.  IMO, this feeling is only partially true if you're looking for non commercial lifestyle activities and environments.  There's very little in-your-face indigenous culture and as such, this lack of soul attributes to the feeling of boredom.  Whatever that's available though, is also available in neighbouring countries and done is a less showcased way.  Eg, proper farms instead of Bollywood Veggies, orchid nurseries instead of the Orchidarium at the botanical gardens, real wildlife instead of a zoo & 'safari', cottage industries instead of "ethnic shops"....etc

2.  About cost.  While S'pore is expensive, it tries to give value for money because there's no other way for an artificial place like this.  Hence, a taxi ride is not questionable compared to the often tiresome haggling, outright cheating, and insecurity experienced in other cities, for eg.

3.  About chewing gum.  The chewing of gum is allowed but its trading and import by whatever means are not.  I believe the authorities are purposely leaving this misconception to fester so that the ban gets naturally enforced.  People need to understand that they don't get arrested for chewing gum publicly because it is legal.

4.  About being less "arty".  There's a variety of arty farty things to do in S'pore and they thrive because the government budgets highly for it.  KL arty folks would kill for such governmental support. If by conforming, it means not doing anything wild and disturbing, then so be it.  Must art always be provocative?

5.  About censorship.  Neighbouring Malaysia makes Singapore look free.  Thailand is ultra sensitive to any lese majeste real or imagined.  In Indonesia, Muslim prayer calls in some parts are so loud and competitive, repetitive even(during Ramadan ) but censuring such "noise pollution" are censored.  In the Philippines, the Church's influence is powerful enough to ban a lot of things deemed immoral and irreligious.

1) Singapore isn't boring. There's shit loads to do. It's better than many cities around the world (most US cities) and is an amazing mix of several cultures (Western, East Asian, Indian and Muslim/Arabic). Only the major super-cities like London or New York beat Singapore.

2) Singapore IS expensive compared to third-world countries but it's about the same as any developed country.

3) Chewing gum is gross.

4) Singapore lacks creativity but it also lacks freedom. SG only has one native media company!

5) I agree that SG is too restrictive. Censorship by government IS a problem and holds back Singapore from developing a truly advanced culture. But it does have positives like better racial harmony.

I agree with the last three points to an extent, but that doesn't make SG a shit place to live! Chewing gum is a ridiculous point to bring up!

What you need is another LKY, to give Sg a steam clean and teach citizens to respect others with politeness and grace. Pity the son is not that keen to do that.  haha

Laws prohibiting jaywalking are unreasonable (but it's not like SG is bereft of unreasonable laws ). A law concerning obstruction of traffic is more reasonable.

A tax on unhealthy consumables might actually be progressive.
