Peranakan Food - Charlie's

I enjoy peranakan food very much, especially ayam buah keluak.

I used to eat at Charlie's along Katong / East Coast area and they served the best value-for-money buah keluak, core-lining (?) ngoh hiang and nangka lemak. But sadly, Charlie's closed a few years ago. Am wondering if it's reopen at another location and does anyone know?

 

If it's closed still, is there any nonya food enthusiast who can recommend good nonya food?

I've just had Good Ole Times and PeraMakan. They are quite good.

Finally went to Candlenut Kitchen last night.

It's ok not to drive there as the restaurant sits nicely above one Outram MRT exit.

Ordered 3 dishes.

The litmus test for us has been Ayam Buah Keluak.

The gravy is thick, a little chilli-hot and less sweet. That's a difference from the usual buah keluak gravy I've tasted. I like it. However, the chicken would have tasted better if cooked together with the gravy.

The second dish was Sambal Prawn Petai. The petai was sliced and they have the color of pistachio. The slices bring out the fragrance and when mixed with the sambal, it brings out a mixtures of sweetness and bitterness. This dish is a big plus.

Our appetizer is ngoh hiang. It's unusually juicy and sinfully delicious.

The chendol has an added twist. I was pleasantly surprised.

Though its a ltiile pricy, I will return to Candlenut Kitchen.

Can't remember who originally mentioned Candlenut. Thanks for the recommendation.

They are still my go-to for satisfying Peranakan food.

Tonight we had Ayam Buah Keluak, Babi Assam (belinbing!), ngoh hiang and rebung masak merah.

The BKL is sour/bitter/sweet to the right combination with 3 filled volcano nuts...

Babi Assam - though the serving looks small, it is very appetizing. Portion is just right.

Ngoh hiang is crunchy and succulent, though portion is a little small.

Haven't had RMM for some time. It's a bit like laksa and lontong flavor with chicken and bamboo shoots.

$34 total bill.

Will go to GOT for my monthly indulgence.

First of all, thanks so much for the treat! Next round on me hehe.

My favourites are the ngoh hiang and Ayam Buah Keluak. The formal is crunchy and succulent while the latter is really tender. Other dishes like Babi pongteh and what's the pork belly dish are also flavourful. Good food and nice service as well. My only 'complain' is that the pork used for Babi pongteh was much too lean for my liking. Overall, a recommended unpretentious restaurant.
