I went through a process of trimming down my LP collection, and whenever I found a CD reissue of an album i had, I sold my LP... and from 3000, I'm now at just a few hundred LP's that I'll never replace. The awful thing was that CD's weren't as long lasting as it was purported to be, and I had discovered a couple of my expensive classical CD sets destroyed by oxidative rot!! I was so sad as there aren't any reissues of those CD's till today. I've written in to the CD label companies and queried the rot issue and the warranty on the expected lifespan of CD formats we were led to believe, they blamed it on the impurities in the aluminium coating leading to the oxidative rot and ultimate destruction of the CD... so much for lifetime usage I guess. Now, I've got to start making copies of my favourite CD's too🤣 🤣 . Yeh, the large TV trend makes the home theater experience more intimate watching your favourite performances up close. During my school days we had a VHS recorder, and the first time Herbert Von Karajan's new year concert was broadcast, I was ready to record it... and it was endlessly replayed till some years later, mould destroyed that tape...and we moved on with VCD's, DVD's, etc.. to streaming! Anyway, now I'm in the midst of doing up my home theater slowly, running new cables and a separate AudioVR System, oh and some soundproofing too, can't wait to test it out, hopefully next month. 👍 Hey mike_amk, Imagine my large surprise when I did read your post! I didn't know that there is this "CD rot", I always assumed that they are eternal! Now I will check among my hundred CDs some that are over 40 years old, and see if I note some degradation. I am keeping six CDs in the drive of one of my cars, and they have been there for over 12 years... in the heat of a car in the sun. I play them here and there, without noticing problems. I am still confident that the RAM chips in the solid state drives don't degrade, because I may have thousands of MP3, MP4 files of audio and video I have ripped from CDs, DVDs and downloaded from YouTube. ( I am very pleased with a program "4K Video Downloader" that I purchased for $25 years ago. ) Twice a year I clone my 1 Tb SSD with a new one or reused one, for a complete backup. In reality... I should not worry too much about the limited lifetime of recordings, since at my age I will become "rotten" in one or two decades at most! Good luck with your AudioVR System, you are an authentic audiophile!

I had never seen this kind of "Sound Burger" before, and indeed it impresses more legit than those circling trucks! It is probably much more expensive too, being an Audio Technica. It's interesting what ingenious devices appeared before they had the digital records and files. And today... the whole world is being driven by these digital bits one and zero! In 1987 I bought a Technics SL-6 linear-tracking turntable plus an Audio-tech cartridge, and paid $296 for them. This is the record player I still use today. Excellent quality, never had to deposit an arm over a record, it can automatically find a selected track. steppenwolf

Yeh, I've seen this back during my school days, it was meant to be an alternative to the Walkman... but I was never inclined to such a contraption... and who would lug a stack of LP's around on a picnic, the heat outdoors would warp it. It seemed more tongue in cheek or ass lol. steppenwolf
Steve5380
Being involved in this thread, it occurred to me to, again after years, to play one of my records. So I picked up a clean record, with piano music of Chopin, and placed in my record player. The Technics linear-tracking player responded as directed, and a nice sound came out of my speakers. Surprise! There is still VALUE in my old records, which I had left aside having all the other sources of recorded music. And I find no hardship in dealing again with vinyl records! It has to be before imprinting the grooves, I guess.
