I visited Phnom Penh a few weeks ago and thought I would pass on a few things I learnt:

 

Accommodation: Arthur and Pauls (A&P) is very good. The staff were friendly, the room was quiet and very comfortable and the breakfast good. I did have some meals at the Rambutan restaurant next door which was tasty and good value by Singapore standards. I let A&P organise a car to pick me up at the airport, but if I came again I'd just get a Grab for about half the price. There is a very well marked Grab pickup zone when you exit the terminal from the arrivals area.

 

Transport: Tuk Tuks are everywhere and are very cheap using Grab, usually less than $2 SGD for trips around the city. The waiting time was usually less than a minute.

 

Massages. I tried a few. The highlights were the massages at A&P. $20USD for 60 minutes and $28USD for 90 minutes. The first massage I had with Matchu, he was very cute and friendly and the massage was very sensual, including prostate massage. The second was with a slightly older masseur, Bertrand, and it was the best and most sensual massage I've ever had.

 

I also tried Ah Ram Massage and Sir Spa. I communicated with both via Telegram beforehand. There was no need to book.

 

I went to Ah Ram Massage twice. Once for a body-to-body massage and once for a 4 hands massage. The prices range around $20-30 USD. I usually tipped $US20 which seemed satisfactory. Ah Ram is well set up with proper massage tables and showers in the massage room. When they asked me to choose the masseurs for the 4-hand massage, they opened some curtains and all the masseurs (about 15 of them) were standing behind glass under bright lights. It was quite awkward. I actually preferred the body-to-body massage as it was much more sensual and included prostate massage.

 

Sir Spa - the price was $30 or $40 depending on the level of service. They didn't have massage tables, but the massage was ok.

 

I know massages are very dependent on the masseur, but the A&P massages were the best for me, then Ah Ram, then Sir Spa. Your experience may be different. I don't think you need to stay at A&P to have a massage there, consider it if you're visiting Phnom Penh.

 

The routine with the massages always seems to be the same - you start lying face down and naked on the massage table. The masseur only wears underwear. After a little while the massage turns more sensual and there is agreement about special services. Then the underwear comes off. This is how all the massages progressed.

 

Sauna: I only tried the Arthur and Pauls Sauna. Staying at the hotel means you don't pay extra for sauna entry. The front desk let me know that it is busiest from 8pm, but people seem to come from about 5pm. I am a bit older and a bit out of shape, and quite shy, and whenever I went later in the evening I couldn't get any attention. Earlier (around 6pm) seemed much better for me. Cambodian men are (in my experience at A&P) really shy. They wear underwear under their towels and would only remove it when it's dark, like in the steam room.

 

Another tip: I found it difficult changing USD in Cambodia. The ATM gave me 100s and they were difficult to break into smaller denominations. Try to get lots of 10s and 20s before you go if you're going to trying different massages.

Thanks for the information. recently there are some issue like kidnap to scam centre and also closing of thailand border.

do u feel safe when u were there? wanted to go but worried about safety and likelihood i will travel more than one city in cambodia.  As for the ATM aint u  able to withdraw USD below 100 so that u do not need to break it?

Watch out for scams where you're asked to put valuables in a locker. Often they have false backs and your USD will be replaced with fake notes. Very common scam in PP

Thanks, I understand now. Their site says that overseas ATM operators may still impose fees. I was using a Wise debit card which is similar and I had to pay the ATM fee.

u might b wrong, QJS - ATM will still charge a free though Youtrip will not charge u, and the fees is quite expensive by the ATM cos they charged by per transaction

Roadside stalls only a couple of times: Cambodian Riel.

Tuk Tuk - all were booked via Grab, and paid on the credit card linked to my Grab account. It saves having to negotiate with drivers or needing change.

Restaurants - credit card.

Once I went to a convenience store, paid with USD, change in Riel.

I really liked it. My room had a king size bed and ensuite bathroom. I assume the other rooms had the same. There are only 5 rooms, so book early if you want to stay there.

Vietnam stopped using USD for daily retail transactions more than a decade ago, if I remember correctly. 

Cambodia seems to be weaning itself away from USD though.

Using cash in cambodia is quite challenging. I rem no Money exchanger in sg buy or sell riel, so USD is the way to go. Not all places take cards esp places like roadside stores and night market/walking street. When using cash you will often get mixture of usd & riel in changes. Bigger denomination usually in usd while smaller ones in riel.  4000 riel = 1 usd

 

Any left over riel better change at their airport. Unless u intend to visit again.

 

For Vietnam they still use USD, i was in Phu Quoc last mth and everything at night market quoted in USD. Airport food stalls and souvenirs stores too.

Main hotels and restaurant do take CC. Only small establishment, road side store n some tourist spots like museum cash only. Take note not all air-con stalls take cc.

Travelex at Changi Airport is the only currency exchange that accepts Cambodian Riel or changes SGD in Riel.

 

The Cambodian National Bank signed an agreement with Travelex to permit the exchange of this currency.

 

but please check with them beforehand whether they have stock.

Changing SGD into Riel should be done at Cambodia. Best at the airport because not all exchange outlets take SGD. 

 

For USD notes, check that you bring the latest series. Cambodian banks are very fussy with notes!

 

Ensure your banknotes are damage-free

Bills with tears or marks may be rejected or offer a lower exchange value. To avoid this, handle your currency carefully and ensure it’s in good condition when you exchange it. If you receive damaged notes, try to exchange them at a reliable exchange service, as they are more likely to accept them.

Yes. Note the Siem Reap airport is called Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport. The old one, Siem Reap International Airport, closed 2 years ago.

Hero spa is a sauna no massage no spa facilities. 99% local cambodian and they dont operate till late. No overnight stay.

 

Getting around is cheap n easy. Just use grab for tuk tuk if you dont want to download and setup their local app. They dont have grab bike unlike thailand.

 

I stayed in Sun & Moon riverside hotel. they have a awesome gym and spa facilities that is shared with a gym chain. Can be cruisy in spa. Its a local 5 stars so all service you can think so they have. No DIY.

Yeah new airport supposed to open in August but slight delay. Now all SQ flight to new airport which is much further away from city.
