Are you matriculating at NUS or NTU and identify as LGBTQIA+ or as an ally? Join us on 15 Aug (Sat) at Qrientation, the only queer-inclusive orientation event for incoming university students! Hear from your seniors about campus life and culture, find out about LGBTQIA+ support resources both on- and off-campus, expand your social network and make some new friends at the event.

Presented by the Inter-University LGBT Network, and organised by Gender Collective (University Scholars Program, NUS), tFreedom (Tembusu College, NUS), The G Spot (Yale-NUS College) and Kaleidoscope (an unofficial group from NTU), this event is open to LGBTQIA+ first-years and allies who will be matriculating at National University of Singapore (NUS), Yale-NUS College (YNC) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in AY2015/2016.

We are concerned with issues intersecting gender, gender identity, sexuality, sexual orientation, asexuality, race, class, and disability - hence the G "Spot", literally a point of intersection, and one deeply connected with the body.

Wondering what the programme for Qrientation@NUS will be, or whether the event is safe for you because you're closeted? Here are some FAQs for the event:

What will the programme be like?

It will be kept as casual as possible so that everyone feels comfortable. There will be a short panel sharing by some students and faculty members on their experiences and thoughts on being LGBTQIA+ in NUS. Community groups will also be invited to set up booths for a mini-fair at the end of the event for participants to find out more about their programmes and volunteering opportunities.

Is Qrientation@NUS safe if I prefer to remain closeted in NUS?

Yes, this event is meant for both those who are closeted and those who are out. Activities have been designed to accommodate the comfort level of everyone so that no one will feel nervous or awkward. Security measures have also been put in place to protect the privacy and safety of participants.

What security measures are there to protect the privacy and safety of participants?

There is a screening process in place to protect the safety of our participants. The event venue will also only be released to confirmed participants several days before the event date. Photography and videography are strictly not allowed at the event and all participants will be required to agree to a confidentiality clause for their participation at Qrientation@NUS.

I am not an NUS or Yale-NUS student. Are there such events at other universities?

Kaleidoscope (an unofficial group from NTU) will be organising Qrientation@NTU while SMU Out To Care is organising Orientation@SMU.

You can find out more about their events here:

If you are from a university not listed above and are interested to organise an event like that, please contact the Inter-University LGBT Network at interunilgbt@gmail.com.
