[jelly星期一] Authentic Peranakan Dishes, Which are your favourite?

[NEWLY OPENED] Tok Panjang Peranakan Cafe (House of Peranakan Group) • Only 3 weeks old, this outlet dishes out yummy Peranakan favourites from Nonya Mee Siam, Kueh Pie Tee, Nasi Lemak Sets, Peranakan Rice Sets, Assam Laksa, Braised Pork Belly Buns, etc., all day from 9am to 9pm!

Kueh Pie Tee ($6.50 for 4 pieces) • This traditional Nonya snack is one dish that involves loads of prepping.

Talking about nice Peranakan food, i would highly recommend this :

Modest, no frills comfort Peranakan food at affordable prices. Several members here can testify as we've eaten there.

Thanks. I've eaten there maybe 5 or 6 times but the last time was some 1.5 years ago so i cannot remember the prices. I've tried the following :

Ayam Buah Keluak

Sambal Sotong

Lady Fingers with Ikan Bilis

Beef Rendang

Ngoh Hiang

Babi Pongteh

Sambal Kangkong

Nonya Chap Chye

Ayam Goreng

All the above are at least average. The two dishes that really stood out are the amazingly flavourful Babi Pongteh and the incredibly fragrant wok hei infused Lady Fingers.

But be warned - ventilation is pretty bad.

Sometime ago, I had watched a Channel 8 Taiwanese TV program that recommended the best roast meat sold in Singapore @ Tiong Bahru Food Centre.

Does anyone know this stall (I think it sells noodles too)?

  • 3 weeks later...

Went on a half-day hawker centre-hop.

First destination - Adam Road Food Centre - http://www.streetdirectory.com/sg/adam-road-food-centre/2-adam-road-289876/36181_36288.html

Spent some 30 minutes each queuing for the two famous nasi lemak.

No.1 Adam's Nasi Lemak

No.1%20nasi%20lemak%20stall_zpsoylvyd6p.

No.1%20nasi%20lemak_zpsd1oxuvjd.jpg

Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak

Selera%20nasi%20lemak%20stall_zpszj7ejt0

Selera%20nasi%20lemak_zpsfdmexc6x.jpg

While No.1 offers excellent succulent Rendang(?) mutton, I pick Selera as the overall winner - superb aromatic basmati rice, crispier and more flavourful fried chicken wings though not the very best out there.

Next, we headed to Alexandra Village Food Centre with the main purpose of eating Tien Siang Wanton Noodles. -  http://www.streetdirectory.com/sg/alexandra-village-food-centre/120-bukit-merah-lane-1-150120/46280_11336.html

Unfortunately, it's shifted to Tanglin Halt so had to settle for the Michelin-starred claypot laksa.

claypot%20laksa%20stall_zpsrdo8kytd.jpg

claypot%20laksa%20stall%202_zpsd3fbuaox.

claypot%20laksa_zps3ln4wibz.jpg

Verdict : tasty but not spicy enough and portion is too small. I believe i can finish 3 small ones by myself at one go.

Finally, travelled all the way to Bedok South for my favourite and the No.1 Char Kway Teow in SG - http://www.streetdirectory.com/sg/bedok-south-road-block-16-market-food-centre/16-bedok-south-road-460016/46279_72258.html

To my dismay grrrr...

hill%20street%20char%20kway%20teow_zpsop

Make do with the following. Both are not bad at all.

changi%20carrot%20cake%20stall_zpsm4gy70

carrot%20cake_zpsvh4gvjzm.jpg

indian%20rojak_zpsepid2y5q.jpg

Well 2 out of 4 ain't good but i guess it's ok considering the amount of food as well as beverages like teh tarik, fruit juices and beer for 2 pax in 6 hours. Burp!
