Circles.Life subscribers get free 10GB data in lieu of National Day celebrations

If you’re subscribed to Circles.Life, you’d be a very patriotic Singaporean until the end of 2016. In lieu of National Day celebrations, the telco is giving away 10GB free mobile data to every customer, regardless of mobile plan type. The free data will be spread out across the coming months until December.

Circles.Life said that the free mobile data will be applied to all customers’ starting from 1st August (today). The celebratory data will be split up over five months, with each month getting 2GB extra until December 2016 – bringing it to a total of 10GB.

According to the telco, the bonus data will simply “appear” in their customers’ accounts, and it will be displayed within the CirclesCare mobile app, complete with a customized National Day message.

You can still get the 10GB bonus even if you aren’t a Circles.Life subscriber yet. Simply become a new customer by 18th August 2016 and you’ll still qualify for the 10GB giveaway. Circles.Life referral programs are still active, so existing subscribers can still convince their friends to jump on-board by 18th August to get even more bonus data. For the month of August, Circles.Life will grant an S$5 bill credit for each referral, on top of the existing bonus of 200MB data per referral.

Circles.Life said that the free 10GB data is subjected to the generic Terms & Conditions here. More information about their promotion can be found on their campaign page here.

New local digital telco Circles.Life launches its Unlimited Bonus Data reward program, allowing customers to earn extra data with no ceiling cap! According to its press release, from today, all interested customers will be able to access its website to sign up, without the need to wait for their registration to be approved.

Its Unlimited Bonus Data plan is a “family and friends referral system that allows customers to earn and keep an unlimited amount of data each month.” Customers will be able to earn 200MB of Bonus Data for every month, for each person they refer, using their own unique personal code. This personal code can be obtained from the Circles.Life mobile app. There isn’t a limit to the amount of monthly Bonus Data a customer can accrue, and this reward scheme will remain as long as the customers stays on Circles.Life network. To further encourage customers to partake in this one-of-a-kind referral system, there’s a leaderboard that showcases the top ranking performers of this scheme, allowing them to stand a chance to win more rewards. Circles.Life is still firming up details for this, so stay tuned for more updates.

Outside the referral system, there are also existing ways to earn Unlimited Bonus Data, i.e.,:

  • Loyalty Bonus Data that allows each early subscriber can earn up to 2GB data each month by remaining on its network for two years. Every 6 months, an additional 500MB per month will be added to subscriber’s monthly Circles.Life plan.
  • Port-in Bonus Data, the number porting feature, which the company has revised for those who choose to port-in their existing numbers. Each port-in customer will receive an extra 1GB of Bonus Data every month. The company’s $28 base plan has been updated to include an additional 1GB of “of App Activation Bonus Data” when customers install the CirclesCare app. This bumps up the total data capacity to 4GB, instead of 3GB when the base plan was first offered.

Based on customer feedback, Circles.Life has introduced two new features:-

  • Their latest PLUS feature, Unlimited Incoming calls for $2 a month. This is in addition to the 100 Talktime minutes included in the base plan and can be added anytime through the CirclesCare app.
  • Data Roamer, a pay-as-you-go data roaming service. Circles.Life customers will enjoy Data Roamer rates of up to $10 for 100MB and will only be billed for the amount of data they consume. For example, if a Circles.Life Data Roamer consumes only 50MB, they will be charged $5 instead of the full $10. From 01 July, Data Roamer rates will be effective, and will cover the top 10 roaming destinations.

Its updated $28 basic plan, with its 4GB data bundle, may just nullify our earlier opinions about Circles.Life foray. With its Unlimited Bonus Data referral scheme, Circles.Life offerings are starting to look attractive to the "data-savvy customer", who “wants to be in control.” So do head over to Circles.Life and check out their latest offers!

Circles.Life is the new digital telco in town: Here's what you need to know

Circles.Life is the new digital telco in town: Here’s what you need to know

Note: This article was first published on May 5th 2016.

There's a new kid on the block

Circles.Life just became the fourth telco in town.

Circles.Life just became the fourth telco in town.

There’s been news brewing for a while now that a fourth telco would be coming to town. Today, that fourth telco is Circles.Life, having beat its competitors to the punch to provide customers with more choice outside the three existing telcos. Starting today, interested parties will be able to register their interest and subscribe to Circles.Life data plans on the telco’s website.

Still, even though it’s been dubbed as the fourth telco, there’s a lot that differentiates Circles.Life from Singtel, Starhub, and M1. For one, it is actually what is called a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). Remember the deal Liberty Wireless struck with M1 last year? Circles.Life is an operating brand under the former. This means that it hasn’t actually built its own physical mobile network, relying instead on a leasing deal with M1, an arrangement which played a big part in why it was able to launch so early. In effect, this means that M1 still owns the physical infrastructure, but Circles.Life has the freedom to craft its own plans and services.

Build your own plan

Rameez Ansar, one of the co-founders, talks about what Circles.Life hopes to bring to the table.

Rameez Ansar, one of the co-founders, talks about what Circles.Life hopes to bring to the table.

When Rameez Ansar, one of Circles.Life’s co-founders and now a director at the company, took to the floor to talk about the launch, his energy and enthusiasm were infectious. To sum things up, Circles.Life is all about choice and the goal of returning power to consumers. According to Ansar, consumers are often encumbered by existing mobile plans, which usually come with too-long contracts, free SMSes that no one really cares about, and a bevy of hidden charges.

Furthermore, most consumers today rely on messaging apps like WhatsApp to communicate, so bundled SMS and talktime freebies don’t really do them any good. As a result, Circles.Life’s plans are highly data-centric, and also highly flexible (also, no contracts!). You can effectively customize your plan to fit your needs, and there’s even an interesting rewards system in place that lets you raise your data cap by performing certain actions, like referring a friend to the service.

The base plan starts at S$28/month, and you get 3GB of data with 100 minutes of talktime. Doesn't sound like much? Read on as there's more to Circle.Life's plan and strategy.

You can add an additional 1GB of data to your plan at S$6/month, or a further 100 minutes of talktime at S$4/month. But if you don’t wish to commit to an extra 1GB of data every month, you can also pay for the precise amount of data that you need with what the company is calling Boost, a way to add small data chunks (100MB, 250MB, or 500MB) for just a few dollars. Then there’s the aforementioned rewards system, which takes the form of Bonus Data that ranges anywhere from 500MB to 4GB. As of now, there's an early bird bonus data of 2GB every month, and customers also stand to receive extra data as a loyalty bonus after they've been on the service for a while.

Here’s a slide with details on the monthly base plan and other costs. Circles.Life also introduced an umbrella of free services that it has dubbed ‘Plus’ – there’s even unlimited data for both WhatsApp messages and voice calls, which is quite a nice touch.

Circles.Life price plan

Here's a quick overview of the customization options available.

Going digital

But perhaps the most intriguing aspect of it all is the fact that all these customizations can be done right in Circles.Life’s smartphone app, called CirclesCare. A trip to the telco’s store – and the mind-numbing wait time – probably doesn’t rank high on anyone’s list of favorite things to do, and that’s exactly what Circles.Life doesn’t want to put you through.

Everything, including adding data and tracking your usage statistics and costs, can be tweaked in the app. What’s more, there is a built-in customer care section that lets you speak to the support team over live chat or WhatsApp if you have any issues.

Everything, from adding more data to contacting customer support, can be done in the CirclesCare app.

Everything, from adding more data to contacting customer support, can be done in the CirclesCare app.

How to sign up

The service goes live today, and customers can head to Circles.Life’s website to sign up, after which a SIM card will be delivered to them. You’re also able to retain your existing mobile number, and you’ll be able to port it over to Circles.Life directly on their site.

Alternatively, you can also get a new number from them, including a limited range of so-called ‘lucky’ numbers that are available at an extra fee.

On top of that, Circles.Life is offering what it says is a selection of the latest phones from names like Apple and Samsung, just like a regular telco. The difference is that these will not be sold at discounted rates. Instead, a range of flexible, interest-free installments are available, courtesy of Circles.Life’s partnership with DBS and UOB (plans to extend this to other banks are underway). What this means is that you won’t need to pay a cent upfront if you don’t want to, which may be especially appealing to students and young adults.

Is it a better deal?

Users whose data needs vary widely from month to month will probably benefit the most from Circles.Life's plans.

Users whose data needs vary widely from month to month will probably benefit the most from Circles.Life's plans.

With that said, the foremost question on your minds is probably whether Circles.Life is in fact offering a better deal than its competitors. The answer is – as it usually is – it depends. The base plan starts at S$28/month for 3GB of data, which isn’t exactly cutthroat pricing. But things start to look more attractive when you consider the fact that the three telcos only offer between 100MB and 300MB of data at a similar price point on their contracted plans.

Then there’s the fact that SIM-only plans like M1’s mySIM+ offerings are cheaper still, and the telcos have in recent times added new options to upsize your data caps. For instance, Singtel’s DataX2 doubles your existing mobile plan’s data cap, while Starhub lets you add an extra 3GB of data for S$6/month.

But one thing to note is that Circles.Life never claimed to offer the best deal in town. Instead, its focus is on customer empowerment and flexibility. The company is directly targeting the needs of the modern, data-focused customer, and it sure sounds good to not have to pay for talktime you don’t use.

If we were to hazard a guess, we’d say that those of you currently teetering on the edge of your 3GB or 4GB plans would benefit the most from Circles.Life’s flexibility, or more specifically, the freedom to ‘boost’ your data cap with bite-sized data chunks. But if you’re already a heavy user on one of the premium 12GB plans, you may be better off staying put.

hi all, anyone using this? not very satisfied with star hub services and thinking of switching network. Any reviews or comments? Thanks!

I am using circles. Not bad, initially was quite laggy but better now.

Wouldnt say is cheaper than other networks, but more flexibility and they legit give 4G, unlike another telco (erhem) that gives bonus data as their own Wifi.

I'm paying $30 for (3 + 4 bonus)GB of Data, 100mins talktime, unlimited whatsapp, and free incoming.

I plonked my father's line over from Starhub to this.

They are essentially data-centric, as the basic plan comes with only 100 mins talk-time and ZERO SMS.

Extra GB of data costs $6/GB.

Extra 100mins of Talktime costs $4/100mins.

Extra SMS costs $4/100 SMS.

Free Caller-ID for life, and bonus data for early sign-up.

Customize your plan according to your usage.

For normal people, our usage probably won't vary that much, and even if it sometimes exceeded the limit, the extra probably isn't much to warrant an extra $4 or $6 for the extra block of Data/SMS/talktime. Somemore the customization takes place only NEXT month, so by then your usage would probably have leveled out oredi, so no point.

They also have no contract, since they are not selling the plan with a phone.

This is good as it doesn't tie you to them for 2 years. Boh su ka? Anytime can change Telco.

This is not good as you cannot get new phones at a cheaper price if you already decide to stay with that Telco for at least the next 2 years anyway. This means that you'd probably have to buy new phones without contract, and these costs upwards of 800-1k.

As far as I know, they have no infrastructure of their own. So they're only riding on the other Telco's telephone lines and transmission towers. Ergo, the quality/speed is dependent on those Telco's infrastructure. Which also means, if not alot of people sign up to them, they can just close shop easily, since they have not much physical assets invested.

To compare, Starhub 4G4 plan is $63 per month. Comes with 4GB data, 350 mins talktime, and 1200 SMS.

Circles.Life, to equalize will be 3GB + 100 mins + 0 SMS = 28. Add 1 GB = +6. Add 250mins ~ $10. Add 1200 SMS = 12x4 = 48.

Same attributes would cost you 28+6+10+48= $92.

But which crazy person uses 1200 SMS anyway? Let's round that to about 400 SMS. = 4x4 = 16.

So the revised cost under Circles.Life = 28+6+10+16=60.

Need More Data? Let's compare the 4G6 plan. $103 per month. 6GB data. 700Mins. 1500 SMS.

Circles.Life would cost : Add 3 GB = 3x6=18. Add 600mins = 6x4 = 24. Add 400 SMS (realistically) = 4x4 = 16.

Circles.Life would cost about 28+18+24+16=86.

Yes, Circles.Life comes with free GB for you, but you would still only save a couple of $6 for it. Is it still cheaper? Indeed. But would you forgo the other fringe benefits that the other established Telcos offer in order to save on these few bucks?

Maybe for the data-centric user.

But what if you're a tech-geek and wants to change a new phone every 2 years?

Tried it, disappointed. While they try to promote themselves as innovative, feels more like the typical chinese "cheap is good" strategy - unstable network (tho riding on M1's), rude customer service ("bait and switch" for promo code) and couldn't get Sms overseas (don't have international telco partner, even in Malaysia or Indo).
