Money can't buy you class. If you're going to show up in court and where your pictures will be taken, at least dress the part. Hire a stylist (since they are presumably rich enough). I mean this is how the majority of the people who read the news will see you. Cheapo tee shirt with designer bag. At least where a better fit tee-shirt than some baggy ones, and coordinate the outfits with the friend.

I think the one with the pink mask is wearing a Versace Icon Medusa necklace. Photo is a blurry and I could be wrong. The one with the white mask is carrying the Valentino Supervee bag.

Love.

Oh yeah... should fine them each $300,000 so they could show off more.

Not against rich people but against people who are stuuuuuupid, classless yet act class, dress worse than pre-schoolers yet think they look cute. Names also one kind. One is Chee Kam Lan and the other Koh Leh Chai... ooooops typo errors!

SINGAPORE - A teenager was on probation for fighting in a public place when he reoffended by posing as female sex workers online to cheat two men of $4,000 in total.

Jerell Lim Jing Kai, now 19, had his probation revoked after pleading guilty to his latest offences - five counts of cheating and one count of dealing with the benefits of criminal activities.

The Singaporean teenager was sentenced to at least six months of reformative training on Thursday (Sept 30).

This means that he will be detained in a centre and made to follow a strict regimen that includes foot drills and counselling.

In February last year, he hatched a plan to cheat others of cash and went on online classifieds website Locanto to create a fictitious profile as a 20-year-old woman called Bernise.

Lim took an image of an unknown woman from social media platform Instagram and used it as Bernise's display picture.

He also created an account on messaging platform Telegram with the username "bernisewz". Lim then approached a friend and asked to "borrow" his bank account.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lai Yan said: "(The friend) would receive money in his bank account and withdraw the money at the accused's instruction, and would be paid 20 per cent of the money he received in his bank account as commission.

"(The friend) agreed to this arrangement and provided the accused with his bank account and the PayLah QR code linked to his bank account."

On March 27 last year, a 24-year-old man, who cannot be named due to a gag order, found Bernise's profile on Locanto and sent a message. Posing as the imaginary Bernise, Lim replied and offered sexual services. They then made arrangements to meet up.

The DPP added: "However, 'Bernise' then informed the victim that ('her') sister was hospitalised, and that she was therefore unable to meet up with him. 'Bernise' then asked the victim for a loan to help with her sister's medical bill. As proof, 'Bernise' sent the victim a photo of a medical bill."

The next day, the victim transferred $1,000 into the bank account belonging to Lim's friend, who kept $200 as commission and handed $800 to Lim.

When the friend later decided not to take part in the ruse, Lim approached another person, who agreed to help him.

The court heard that Bernise continued to ask the victim for money, claiming that she needed to settle expenses for items, including more medical bills.

The victim then transferred another $2,520 into the second accomplice's account.

The victim finally suspected that he had been scammed and lodged a police report on April 26, 2020.

Using a similar method, Lim posed as another female sex worker online, "Felicia", and cheated a second victim of $480.

Separately, Lim also opened a bank account earlier this year and allowed the proceeds of an unrelated investment scam totalling more than $191,000 to be transferred into it.

For each count of cheating, an offender can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined.

SINGAPORE - For robbing a 7-Eleven store of eight packets of cigarettes, a first-time offender was sentenced to three years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane on Thursday (Sept 30).

Muhamad Ismail Zainudin, 40, who was working as a security officer, was convicted on one charge of robbery at night.

On Thursday, he begged for leniency and promised never to repeat the offence after pleading guilty to the charge.

But District Judge Luke Tan said the mandatory minimum required by law for the charge was three years' jail and 12 strokes, which he then handed to Muhamad Ismail.

At about 4.10am on April 19, Muhamad Ismail went to the 7-Eleven in Bukit Batok Street 52 wearing a dark-coloured long sleeved top with a hoodie over his head.

He bought and paid for a bottle of coffee before asking if he could buy alcohol. The cashier refused and said she would call the police if he refused to leave.

Muhamad Ismail then showed her part of a plastic dummy nunchaku in his pocket, and told her to sit down or he would cut her.

The cashier complied and pleaded with him not to hurt her.

He then took eight packets of cigarettes from the store and fled home.

Security footage from his block showed him leaving and returning while using an umbrella to shield himself from the police cameras.

But the police were still able to trace and arrest him on the same day.

Officers searched his unit and found the plastic dummy nunchaku, consisting of two 26cm parts and a plastic chain. They also found the cigarette packs, of which one had been opened.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Delicia Tan urged the court to jail Muhamad Ismail for three years and a month with 12 strokes of the cane.

She said the uplift of one month was because he took calculated steps to avoid detection, and that the use of the dummy weapon was a calculated move to cause fear.

She also asked for him to pay back $12.20 for the opened packet of cigarettes, with a default jail term if he failed to do so.

Muhamad Ismail, who did not have a lawyer, said he was fully remorseful and that he committed the offence out of anger. He pleaded with the court for leniency.

Judge Tan said there was clear planning involved, but noted that he was a first-time offender. He also said he would not make the compensation order.

He backdated the sentence to April 19.

Those convicted of committing robbery between 7pm and 7am face a minimum of three years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane, with a maximum prison sentence of 14 years.

SINGAPORE - A woman was issued a personal protection order (PPO) in 2017 that restrained her from committing acts of violence against her teenage son, but breached it multiple times this year.

She flung a ceramic bowl at the 16-year-old on one occasion and it struck his chin, drawing blood.

Another incident saw her using a bicycle lock to hit the boy once on his right collar bone, causing a small cut.

"SINGAPORE: A man was sentenced on Monday (Oct 4) to jail and caning after he raped his 13-year-old daughter and forced his 15-year-old son to rape his biological mother twice. The 41-year-old man, who cannot be named due to gag orders protecting the victims' identities, was given 29 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane. He pleaded guilty to three charges of rape, sexual assault and abetting by instigating his son to rape. Multiple other charges, including a second instance of forcing his son to rape his own mother, were taken into consideration. The court heard that the offender was a technician and lived in a flat with his wife, daughter and son, who are now aged 45, 16 and 18 respectively" "In 2015, the man was at home alone with his 11-year-old daughter when he told her to wash her private parts. The girl knew that this meant her father wanted to perform sexual acts on her, as he had done so before when she was in Primary 3. She complied and returned to the room, where her father was waiting naked. He performed a sex act on her and forced her to reciprocate. The child did not consent to the sex acts, but complied because she was afraid of her father, Deputy Public Prosecutor Victoria Ting said." Around September 2017, the man was alone at home again with his daughter, who was now 13. After drinking in the hall, he went to the girl's room and asked her to wash her private parts. He later performed sex acts on her and then told her some words that the girl took to mean he wanted to have sex with her. He then raped his daughter. The girl felt great pain and asked her father to stop, but he continued. She confided in her brother about the sex acts and complained to him about the pain she felt after sex. He advised her not to give in to their father, but he did not tell anyone what happened as he was worried about being beaten by his father and did not want to ruin his family's reputation. The girl did not tell her mother what happened as she was afraid her mother would confront the offender and that they would fight. She believed that her father might injure her mother. "One night in 2018, the offender drank beer and liquor with his wife until she fell asleep, drunk.  The man's son, who was 15 to 16 at the time, was playing games on his Xbox. The man asked his son to follow him to the bedroom and he complied. The teenager saw his mom sleeping naked on the bed. When his father told him to have sex with his mother, the teen was shocked and said he did not want to. The offender got angry, and the teenager complied as he was afraid of being beaten up. The offender assisted his son in the act. Eventually, the boy complied with his father's instructions, but was worried his mother would wake up. He stopped immediately once his father left the room. " "His mother was drunk and slept throughout and did not know what had happened. The man's daughter realised that it was wrong for her father to have sex with her after she took a sex education class. She eventually told her aunt in 2019 that her father had sex with her, and her aunt took her to a police station to lodge a report. Investigations uncovered the other offences the man committed. The offender said he raped his daughter as he did not want her to have sex with any other men and wanted her to be single. "He thought if she wanted to have sex with anyone, it should be with him and not any other (man)," said the prosecutor."

SINGAPORE - A teenager was just 16 years old when he committed serious crimes including selling his bank accounts that were later used to receive proceeds of investment scams totalling more than $200,000.

Separately, he also acted on behalf of loan sharks multiple times to harass debtors.

The Singaporean, who is now 17, pleaded guilty on Monday (Oct 4) to seven charges for offences including defacing the doors of debtors' homes with paint and allowing others to use his bank accounts for criminal activities.

He cannot be named as his identity is protected under the Children and Young Persons Act.

The police had previously said they received multiple reports about an investment scam related to several bank accounts between May and August last year.

The victims had made "investments" on online trading platforms after befriending unknown persons online.

After they deposited money into specific bank accounts for the investments, they realised their money was lost or could not be withdrawn from the online trading platforms.

The court heard that the teenager had met someone in a group chat called "Nasi Lemak" on messaging platform Telegram early last year.

Court documents do not state if this was the same group chat that hosted upskirt images. Several men linked to these images had earlier been dealt with in court.

The unknown person offered to buy bank accounts from the teenager who agreed to sell them.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Samuel Chew said: "The accused knew that users of the 'Nasi Lemak' Telegram group chat were involved in illegal activities, and thus had reasonable grounds to believe that the unknown individual was engaged in criminal conduct."

Between January and April last year, the youth opened at least three bank accounts under his name, and handed their corresponding bank cards and ibanking tokens to an unidentified person . The teenager was paid between $500 and $800 per account.

The police later received multiple reports about the investment scams.

SINGAPORE — A 29-year-old man pleaded guilty on Tuesday (Oct 5) to having underage sex with his girlfriend’s daughter from when she was 14.

The girl, who regarded the man as her father, ended up pregnant and gave birth last year at age 15.

He cannot be named due to a court order protecting the identity of the girl, who is now 17.

The man was convicted of three counts of sex with a minor under the age of 16 and will be sentenced at a later date.

District Judge Carol Ling granted the prosecution an adjournment for them to prepare their sentencing submissions for the case, which is believed to be the first such case after amendments to the penal code took effect last year that raised the penalties for underage sex involving an exploitative relationship.

WHAT HAPPENED

The court heard that the man first met his girlfriend and her daughter in 2015.

The next year, he moved in with his girlfriend and her daughter joined them a few months later.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Jamie Pang told the court that for the first year and a half, the man and the girl did not have a close relationship because she had previously been sexually abused by a family member when she was between 10 and 12 years old.

She generally avoided her mother’s boyfriend as she was still affected by the past ordeal, DPP Pang said.

Eventually, the man earned the girl’s trust by assuming the role of a father figure that she was lacking because her biological father was in jail.

The man would shower the girl with affection by spending relatively large sums of money to celebrate her birthday and taking her out for her favourite activities. He would also care for her when she was ill and help her with her homework.

Over time, the two developed a relationship akin to father and daughter, with the girl calling him “daddy”, DPP Pang said.

“The way the accused treated (the girl) made her feel secure, and he provided her with the love and affection that she yearned for but was unable to get from her biological father, who was incarcerated.”

Sometime in late 2018, they began having unprotected "consensual" sex regularly at home while the man’s girlfriend was at work, DPP Pang added.

The man was unemployed at the time.

This continued for more than a year and the girl became pregnant.

On May 14 last year, the girl was admitted to the National University Hospital for severe tummy pain.

A medical staff member ascertained it to be labour contractions and alerted the police because the girl was 15 years old.

The Immigrations and Checkpoints Authority also alerted the police two weeks later when the girl showed up to register the birth of her daughter and did not indicate any details of the child’s father on the birth certificate.

The man was arrested in his home in July and a DNA test determined that he was the biological father of the girl’s child.

A doctor found that the man’s repeated sexual abuse had caused the girl to have passive suicidal thoughts.

She also suffered from moodiness, irritability, had difficulty sleeping and a worry that her baby daughter might hate her in future if she eventually found out who her biological father is, the doctor said.

For having sex with a minor between 14 and 16 years old, an offender could be jailed up to 10 years, fined or punished with both. If the offender’s relationship is exploitative of the victim, the offender could be jailed up to 20 years and liable to be fined or caned.

SINGAPORE — When he discovered that his girlfriend had slept with another man, Teo Yao Hong went online to chat with a 14-year-old girl because he wanted to "feel a bit better". Despite knowing her age, Teo later engaged in sex acts with her and regarded her as his “friend with benefits”, he said. He was caught when the girl’s parents returned home while he was washing up in a toilet there. When he emerged naked from the toilet, the girl’s parents called the police and forbade him from getting dressed until they arrived. On Thursday (Oct 7), the 24-year-old pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual penetration of a minor under 16, with four similar charges taken into consideration during sentencing. He was jailed for one year and 11 months. When the two met for the first time below her flat, on June 28 last year, Teo saw that she was wearing her secondary school uniform. Despite this, he asked her for sex. She agreed and they engaged in a sex act at a nearby staircase landing. Two days later, they had sex at her flat while no one else was home. On Oct 19 last year, they again had sex at her flat. When he went to the bathroom, the girl’s parents returned home. He hid in the bathroom for about an hour before walking out naked in front of her parents. The girl’s father slapped Teo across his face after asking him if he knew how old his daughter was.  Her mother then called the police and forbade Teo to wear his clothes until the police arrived. He was arrested and a pair of underwear was seized.

SINGAPORE - A man was found dead in a bedroom after a fire broke out in a Housing Board flat in Jurong West, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said on Friday (Oct 8).

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was of electrical origin from a personal mobility device (PMD).

The SCDF was alerted to the blaze on the fifth storey of Block 978 Jurong West Street 93 at 2.25am on Friday. Two people were seen standing on a ledge outside a unit.

The firefighters broke into a bedroom of the flat to rescue them.

The fire, which involved the contents in another bedroom, was extinguished with one water jet.

A 22-year-old man was found in that bedroom and pronounced dead at the scene by a SCDF paramedic, the police said.

A 24-year-old unconscious man had been evacuated from the flat before the SCDF arrived and was taken to Singapore General Hospital for burn injuries, said the police.

SINGAPORE: After a "feng shui" master advised him to have sex with a virgin to "see blood" and avoid a life-threatening mishap, a man raped his 11-year-old daughter.

He later admitted that he could not explain why but was "aroused by her".

The 50-year-old man, who cannot be named due to gag orders protecting the victim's identity, was sentenced to 23 years' jail on Monday (Oct 18).

He pleaded guilty to one count each of aggravated statutory rape and aggravated sexual assault by penetration, with another seven charges taken into consideration.

The court heard that the man worked as a store assistant and stayed in a four-room flat with his family - his wife, his brother, the victim and the victim's older sister.

Sometime in September 2018, the man consulted a Chinese geomancy or "feng shui" master in Malaysia, who advised him to have sexual intercourse with a virgin by the end of 2018 "so that can see blood".

This was purportedly for him to avoid a life-threatening mishap in 2019. The feng shui master offered to help him procure what was required for RM2,000 (S$650) to avoid tragedy from befalling him.

However, the man did not take up the offer as he did not have enough money.

According to the defence, the man was "deeply disturbed" by the predictions.

MAN BEGAN PREYING ON HIS YOUNGER DAUGHTER

In October 2018, the accused started "developing sexual desires" for his 11-year-old daughter when they engaged in physical horseplay, the prosecutor said.

He molested her and asked her not to tell anyone, and his daughter began avoiding sleeping with him. Instead, she would sleep either with her mother or her sister.

As the accused did not have opportunities to be alone with the girl at night, he found opportunities during the day, on weekends or during school holidays, the court heard.

Sometime between October and December 2018, when the victim's mother and sister were out shopping for groceries, the accused entered the bedroom the victim was in and closed the door.

He then raped the 11-year-old girl, who felt pain and told him to stop. The man stopped shortly before his wife and older daughter returned home as he had been anticipating their return.

The accused sexually assaulted his daughter again before December 2018 while he was at home alone with her.

THE GIRL DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO

The girl did not tell her mother or sister about what had happened, as she did not want her parents to fight or divorce each other.

She was also afraid that her mother would scold or blame her, as her mother had previously told her that she should not let anyone touch her or be naked in front of others.

She felt sad and did not know what to do, as she could not tell her mother about it and her mother was the closest person to her in the family, the prosecutor said.

The offences came to light only when the girl's behaviour worsened in school in August 2019. She was caught drinking vodka and using an electronic cigarette and broke down when questioned by her form teacher.

She revealed that her father had "touched her", and the school counsellor and the Ministry of Social and Family Development were alerted. Officers took the girl to make a police report on Aug 29, 2019.

She had repetitive thoughts of the offending acts during her Primary School Leaving Examinations and would tear up when talking about the offences.

Her father was arrested and assessed by a psychiatrist, who found he had no mental illness nor intellectual disability.

The offender told the psychiatrist he had planned to have sex with the victim after hearing the feng shui master's predictions.

"He could not explain why he chose the victim, but admitted that he was sexually aroused by her," Deputy Public Prosecutor Joshua Lim said.

He asked for at least 23 years' jail, inclusive of a year's jail in lieu of caning, saying that the man had looked for opportunities to commit the offences while his family members were out.

He also used her as "a tool for which he could prevent mishap to himself", said Mr Lim.

HE IS REMORSEFUL, REALISES FOLLY: DEFENCE

Defence lawyer Audrey Koo asked instead for not more than 19 years' jail, saying her client is "deeply remorseful" and realises the foolishness of his actions.

She said he was "deeply disturbed by the feng shui master's predictions", with "fears about this prophesied tragedy" plaguing him for months after.

He has pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, fully cooperated with the police and understands that his actions have affected his familial relationships irreparably, she said.

"He truly regrets the offences he committed out of a moment of folly and in fear of the feng shui master's predictions. Even today, he cannot believe that he did this to his own daughter," she said.

The lawyer added that the man's family has "shown signs of forgiveness" towards him and continues to visit him in prison.

For rape, he could have been given between eight and 20 years' jail. He cannot be caned as he is 50. The penalties are the same for sexual assault by penetration against a minor.

SINGAPORE - A woman appeared in a district court on Monday (Oct 25) as she is accused of failing to take steps to protect her daughter from being sexually abused by her son.

The Singaporean woman, now 43, and all other parties linked to this case, cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the daughter's identity.

She now faces two charges under the Children and Young Persons Act and three counts of intentionally omitting to give any information on the sexual offences against the girl.

In January last year, the man, who was then 22 and a diagnosed paedophile, was sentenced to 11½ years' jail and seven strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to one charge each of molestation and statutory rape.

Seven other charges for sexual offences were taken into consideration.

When he was 13, he started sexually abusing his younger sister, then five, when he felt the urge to perform the acts depicted in pornographic animations that he watched online.

He was 20 years old when he had sex with his sister, then 12, while his mother and younger brother slept in the same bedroom.

The court heard on Monday that in 2010 and 2017, the mother allegedly omitted to give any information about the sexual offences committed against her daughter.

Two charges involved rape, while a third involved molestation.

Between June and September 2017, the mother is said to have "knowingly permitted" her son to ill-treat her daughter.

The woman allegedly knew from as early as 2010 that he was sexually abusing his sister and that the girl was at risk of further acts of abuse.

The mother is accused of failing to take steps to protect her daughter from such risks.

Her case has been adjourned to Nov 15.

For each charge under the Children and Young Persons Act, an offender can be jailed for up to four years and fined up to $4,000.

SINGAPORE - A Certis security officer abused his position as a team leader and molested two of his female subordinates at their workplace.

The 55-year-old Singaporean was sentenced to 10 weeks' jail on Monday (Oct 25) after he pleaded guilty to two counts of molestation.

Details about his identity and their workplace cannot be disclosed due to a gag order to protect the women's identities.

Responding to queries from The Straits Times, Certis said the man was suspended from all duties immediately after his arrest on March 27 last year, and he resigned the following month.

The court heard that while he was working as a team leader, he frequently passed comments about women's bodies and looks. He also cracked "dirty" jokes relating to sex and female private parts.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kwang Jia Min said: "Even though the female team members working under the accused felt disgusted at those comments and jokes, they did not dare to openly show their displeasure as the accused was their supervisor."

Some time in February last year, one of the victims, 23, was at work when the man smacked her buttocks. She felt traumatised after the incident, the court heard.

The man reoffended the following month when he molested another woman, 22, at their workplace by stroking her thigh.

The DPP said: "(She) felt shocked and uncomfortable with the accused touching her. As it was (her) first day in the accused's team and the accused was her supervisor, (she) was scared, did not know what to do, and did not dare to openly push the accused's hand away."

The older victim finally told their deputy team leader in a casual conversation about what the man had done.

The deputy team leader alerted the woman's other seniors, while the younger woman separately made a police report.

In its statement on Monday, Certis said: "Counselling was offered to the victims and they were monitored closely to help them cope with the incident. We will continue to practise an open-door policy and provide a safe and secure environment for all our officers.

"We also communicate and remind our officers regularly on the importance of integrity and mutual respect, while upholding the highest values and standards of the organisation.

"Certis has a zero-tolerance policy for any criminal acts and takes a serious view of this incident... We will not hesitate to take necessary action on any employee who fails to meet the required standard."

For each count of molestation, an offender can be jailed for up to two years and fined or caned.

The offender in this case cannot be caned as he is more than 50 years old.

SINGAPORE - A Singapore Management University (SMU) student was on Monday (Oct 25) sentenced to 10 months' jail and ordered to be given three strokes of the cane for molesting a woman on campus in 2019.

The incident occurred when the two met for a study session in a classroom at around 1am on Jan 8 that year. Lee Yan Ru, now 25, had got to know the victim on social media platform Instagram about one month before.

Before handing down the sentence on Monday, District Judge Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz said that the degree of sexual exploitation in this case was high.

She also said that Lee’s touch on the victim was “more than fleeting”.

On Aug 31, the judge found Lee guilty of one count of molestation following a trial.

The victim, who was then studying at another university, cannot be named due to a gag order to protect her identity.

She was 20 years old when the Singaporean man molested her.

During the trial that started in September last year, the court heard that she got to know Lee on Instagram around December 2018 and that they had mutual friends.

On Jan 8, 2019, she met Lee outside SMU's School of Economics and Social Sciences at around 1am and they went into a classroom.

The woman testified that while they were in the room, Lee committed acts such as placing his foot on her thigh several times.

She also told the court that Lee groped her at around 4am and she prised his fingers off.

When Deputy Public Prosecutor Andre Chong asked her during the trial why she did not leave, she replied: "I did not want to leave a bad impression or make him feel bad. I didn't want to make things hostile."

Lee then stimulated himself about two hours later while he was kneeling over the woman, who was asleep. She alerted the police at around 6.30am.

The woman told the court that after committing the offence, Lee took out some tissue paper to wipe her.

DPP Chong said that the Health Sciences Authority's DNA Profiling Laboratory found that the tissue paper contained Lee's body fluids.

Swabs taken from the woman's neck and face also gave similar results, the court heard.

Lee, who took the stand earlier this year, testified that he had assumed the acts were consensual.

Delivering her verdict in August, the judge noted that Lee did not deny committing the sexual act on the victim.

Instead, he had claimed that the victim was "fine" with his advances and that she had been "coy" with him.

Judge Sharmila, however, noted that the woman was asleep when Lee started performing the sexual act on her. As such, she was in no position to consent to it.

The judge also found that the woman had been truthful in court, and added that Lee "was fully aware (the victim) wanted him to desist".

On Monday, the court heard that Lee intends to appeal against his conviction and sentence. He was offered bail of $20,000.

For molestation, an offender can be jailed for up to two years and fined or caned.

I did not find any thread covering non gay related local news. I just post it here as I don't intend to open a thread on this.

Sale of standard tickets at MRT stations to end by March 2022

SINGAPORE - Sale of standard tickets - limited use paper tickets - at MRT stations will be progressively phased out between January and March 2022.

This comes as most commuters are already using stored value cards or account-based ticketing such as contactless bank cards.

Standard tickets were introduced to allow commuters to pay for their ride when the MRT system began operations in 1987, but now fewer than one in 1,000 trips are paid using these tickets, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in August.

The LTA said on Friday (Dec 3) that the move will start with the Thomson-East Coast and Downtown lines from Jan 10.

This will be followed by the Circle and North East lines on Feb 10, and the North-South and East-West lines on March 10.

The LTA has also reduced the minimum top-up amount for stored value cards such as ez-link cards at ticketing machines to $2, down from $10 for adults and $5 for student concession cards.

"This will allow commuters who have limited cash on hand to top up, continue their journeys and enjoy the cost savings," said the LTA.

The move to phase out standard tickets - purchased for single or return trips - because of low usage was announced earlier in August.

In preparation for the phasing out of standard tickets, the LTA conducted pilots earlier this year at some MRT stations, where the sale was temporarily halted.

"Through these trials, we found that those who were still using standard tickets generally had access to alternative payment modes such as contactless bank cards, mobile wallets and ez-link cards," the LTA noted.

Associate Professor Walter Theseira of the Singapore University of Social Sciences said that it is ultimately a matter of balancing cost concerns.

“Of course, we should be concerned about the small number of passengers who simply can’t use any of the other ticketing systems. But putting in the effort to help them individually might be less difficult and costly than maintaining the entire standard ticketing system,” he said.

So far so good!

However, placing the data on the last 2 years seems a bit flawed in my view, because it left out a big portion of users of these "standard tickets" or single trip tickets, namely the tourists.

"Early this year" during the LTA trials there were no tourists around in Singapore.

The advantage to tourists were due to the minimal cost for purchasing a single trip card, from my memory there was a 10 or 20 cents additional fee, while purchasing an Ez-Link card will require the payment of a non-refundable 3 to 5 Dollar Fee. Foreign credit cards do not work as to my knowledge.

The further group not considered by phasing out this type of tickets are Ez Link card holders who forgot to bring along their wallet of Ez-Link card. Then yo have no other means but need to buy another Ez-Link card. Such events can happen...

My personal guess is that the cards are removed as MRT is installing new Top Up machines that do not cater to the Single Trip/ Standard tickets. That is probably the only reason.

We usually see news about massage parlours and men getting caught for engaging in sexual services, but this time the tables have turned: the men themselves are calling the cops on the massage parlour.

They did go for massages at midnight though, which is pretty questionable. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Coerced Men Into Sexual Services Despite Men’s Refusals

Two men, 21 and 19 years old, visited West Wellness at Citigate Residence on 10 February last year. It was near midnight when they went into the parlour and asked for a massage.

First red flag: the massage parlour giving massages past 10:30pm, which is against the law.

They agreed to pay $50 each for a one-hour body massage. The 21-year-old man paid $110 for both of them, with the $10 for administrative charges.

The two men were then led into separate cubicles divided by wooden partitions. This is the second red flag here, as customers should be able to see the massage services provided. The wooden partitions meant that massage services were administered privately, which is yet again illegal.

The two men were asked to undress. The operator of the parlour, Mika Lin Yi Hui, then began massaging the 19-year-old man. She then told him to turn over, and started touching his genitals.

The man realised what was going on and objected to sexual services, even saying no repeatedly to the extra service. Lin then left the cubicle.

You might think, whew, at least she left! Nope. She was persistent.

Lin came back after about ten minutes with another masseuse, and both of them were topless. Lin took the man’s hands and made him rub her chest, while the other masseuse touched his genitals again.

At this point, I would say that this could be counted as sexual harassment. Both kept saying “money money” to the man, and he was eventually coerced into paying for the extra service that he didn’t ask for.

After the “massage” was over, Lin took the man’s wallet from his pants and asked for $100. He took out the cash and gave it to her, which she took and left.

Not Providing Normal Massage Services Due To CNY Period?

While all that was happening to the 19-year-old, the 21-year-old man was enjoying a perfectly normal massage.

Well, that was until Lin and another masseuse came over from the other cubicle, still topless.

When the two tried to massage him, he refused and said he only wanted a normal massage. The pair left the cubicle, only for Lin to come back and say they weren’t providing normal massage services… because of the Chinese New Year period. What?

The man asked for a refund, but the women demanded that he pay more money because the two masseuses were half-naked. They promised to continue with the normal massage.

The man gave in and paid $100 for the extra service. However, during the normal massage, the women tried to pull his shorts down, despite his refusals. He eventually gave up.

Called The Police, Women Tried To Ask Men To Leave

The two men met up after their massage sessions and asked the women for a refund of the original $110 they paid. Of course, Lin refused.

The 19-year-old then called the police and reported the women for unsolicited sexual services and coercing them to pay. Upon hearing that the man have called the police, the counter staff tried to return the money and asked them to leave.

It was, of course, too late by then.

Pleaded Guilty To Providing Massage Services Without Valid License

Lin, who had been managing operations since August 2020, was fined $5,000 on 14 February 2022, after pleading guilty to one count of providing massage services without a valid license.

Remember the red flags I pointed out earlier? The provision of services after 10:30pm, as well as the opaque exterior and interior of the parlour, failed to satisfy conditions under the Massage Establishments Order (Exemption) Order 2018.

It turns out that Lin’s son, Weng Yize, was West Wellness’ sole proprietor. He faces a charge of allowing Lin to provide services without a valid license, and his case is still pending.

Moral of the story? Don’t go to massage parlours at midnight. You’ll never know what you might meet there.

When I was in my mid 20s, I went to a salon for my normal haircut, and it was early evening.  Halfway thru my haircut, the young woman asked me if I needed "extra service".  I said no and she didn't persist because my voice hit her as a Gay guy.   A normal brightly lead salon with an open window, can also be misleading.  Since then,  I always visit the normal barber shop.   I felt very safe.

Am I the only who noticed this? The son allowing the mother to provide services without a valid license...and SEXUAL ones too?  What on earth is the world coming to, when the son is pimping out the mother?? I thought last time, we say "such things only happen in America". But nowadays, I guess anything goes in the land where foreign trash roams.

"Neglect of duty means the failure to take proper action to perform a required task," said Mr Shanmugam.

The investigation officer who handled the police report handled it as a routine theft case, and it was so, but there were some lapses, said the minister.

The investigation officer did not visit the scene of the crime "promptly" to carry out the investigation and gather evidence.

“This contributed to a break in the chain of custody for some exhibits,” he said.

He added that the investigation officer did not “properly verify” some of the claims made by the parties during the investigation.

His supervisor did not provide "sufficient guidance", which contributed to the lapses, Mr Shanmugam said.

The penalty for neglect of duty depends on the officers’ degree of culpability, and the harm caused by their actions, the minister said, adding that penalties can range from a reprimand or financial penalty, to demotion and dismissal from service.

A financial penalty in the "medium range" was imposed on both officers for neglect of duty.
