What do you do in Singapore for fun?

And when I say fun, I don't mean anything sexual.

I recently went down to Singapore to visit my relatives and I realised that there isn't much to do in Singapore besides going to malls.

I personally don't shop (neither do I have the funds for it even if I want to), so I was wondering, what do locals do for fun daily?

I'm sorry you have missed the Gardens by the Bay/Marina Bay Sands area.

The MRT stop is Bayfront and once you walk out of the long underpass, you reach a different world.  The best time to see the garden is about 6 pm (on a fine day). You could visit both the domes, start with the dry one before going to the wet one.  At about 7.30 pm, the lights will be up and it's magical.  The expected damage: SGD30 or if you don't see the domes, FREE.

My second favourite haunt is, of course, Sentosa.  If you arrive at Chinatown MRT before 7.45am, the train ride is FREE.  You may want to have your breakfast at the hawker centre - simple noodles, chee cheong fun, mee siam for a little amount (from SGD 2 upwards).  After breakfast, walk to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.  Take some wonderful pictures there (remember to attach a wide angle lens to your camera phone).

Cross the street and take bus 80 or 145 to Harbourfront.  You got to board the bus by 8.30 am as there is a time limit of 45 mins if you want to enjoy discounted bus fares.  The discounted fare is just a mere SGD$0.18.

You walk through Vivocity and walk along the link bridge towards Sentosa.  Admission by foot is FREE.  Once at the island, you can take pictures of the famous UNIVERSAL globe.  Take your time to walk around the grounds of this area (outside the Universal Studio).  From there, walk on and snap pictures of the large Merlion statue.  Within minutes of walking, you will reach the beach.  Take the FREE tram ride around the island as it is a loop service.   You can jump off at any of the designated stops.

The water in Sentosa is passable but if you like some peace and would prefer to tan in skimpier than thou (gstrings), head for the Tanjong Beach.    Remember to bring sun tan lotion, lots of water and perhaps a sandwich.

After a good tanning session, wash your stupendous body at the "cruisy" toilets, opposite the Tanjung Beach Club.  Thereafter, walk to the tram stop..yes, the same location where you had just alighted hours ago. Returning to the mainland is simple.  Just board the monorail back..it is still FREE at this time of writing.

Singapore is beautiful and very affordable.

Hahahaah i appreciate your concern over my funds, but i was actually asking what do Singaporeans do in general everyday.

In hindsight though, I did do some of the (touristy) stuff you've mentioned. It was pretty cool. But i now feel like I shouldve posted this before I went down haahah.

My dear,

Most Singaporeans work at least 5 days, 10 hours a week.

So we really don't have much time to smell the roses..

Most of us would hit the gym after work or do some form of sports.

Singaporeans are a smart bunch that goes shopping overseas.

As the Singapore dollar is getting stronger compared to the regional currency, shopping overseas becomes a MUST, besides online shopping.

There's fun from within and without. Why should fun be restricted to 'someone' has to built or prepare to bring fun into one's life. If the fun is a self indulgence then you have to seek that out than wait. Or for some folks, they wait for it to happen or complain about it ..i.e. lack of it in some 'country' yet again bashing SG topic as you read in forums. heh.

Life must be really mundane if you can not look beyond the usual social trappings like malls, parks, clubs..etc. I have many distractions  (way more beside sex) and many I don't need to wait for it to happen or spend a lot on. Like everything else in my life, no one owes me a living. And within my means, expectation and budget, my fun experiences exist. No use dreaming about parachuting for example when you know logically this is not possible here or cheap for you to do. Life is like that, we can not get everything we want for fun or free.

Tennis / badminton for 10 years. golf for 6 years. flew model aeroplanes/helicopters (before drones) for 5 yrs, offshore fishing for 20 years, trekking, street photography for a lifetime. round island cyclist for a life time (include a few overseas cycle trips) traveling, hardcore PC gamer, gunpla, PC building enthusiast, keeping up with tech stories, Music, avid reader off and online, former foodie, Movies, concert and cultural exhibitions around town, participating in a few social media themes online. I have my life devoted to those fun interests and they happen in phases and depending on my job remands that allows for it. And there are still more things I want to do but not enough time or energy for it yet.

Singapore does have a lot of rather unusual/different activities; just google "unusual activities Singapore". They all tend to cater to the outdoorsy/adventury/sporty kind.

There are even some "unusual" indoor attractions like escape mazes, trick-eye museums, wax museum, indoor skiing, etc.

I'm still not sure why some people find Singapore boring.

Have you seen the community centres in Singapore? They are pretty big with all sorts of courses, gyms, even KTV rooms for use for all ages.

Granted that most people are working long hours on the weekdays, so those are likely to be gyms and leisure. But comes weekend, those running enthusiast will be at macrichite in the 7 early 8 early. The whole day you can see people running in there, just look at how many people take part in the different marathons throughout the year.

Go to marina reservoir and you'll see picnics and kite flying. Last time this used to be done at marina bay park. Bowling is there also with some arcade.

The tai-tais will be at brunch at the different high class restaurants, whereas the youngsters will be at hipster cafes. The bookworms will be at regional libraries where they sit on cafe lounges and sipping "branded" coffee inside the library itself. Kids can go there for story telling sessions also.

Cyclists will be doing cross-island cycling or the casual ones will be using the park connectors. Swimming complexes and sports courts (badminton/table tennis) are all fully filled for family/friends pitting their skills against each other. All the various lakes are filled with dragonboaters/wind surfers.

Weekends are also a time when people do their charity work at nursing homes, old folks homes etc. Else, there's always youtube, movies, gaming, korean dramas for you to chase up till sunday night, where the next week of toiling starts all over again.

To add, nowadays i see activities like JB shopping trip posted at the notice board at the void decks. What do you like to do?

Hi.

Where are you from? What do you do for fun in the place you stay? Most likely you can do the same here. If fun in tourist view, go read up online or tripadvisor.

I travel very often and sg has more to offer as compared to many major cities..do some research to see what suits you.

A lazy man will find himself bored if he cant be borthered to do any homework in a new environment.

So it seems as though for some odd reason a lot of you guys find this post very offensive or think that I'm lazy to do my "homework" on Singapore.

So allow me to rephrase, my question is very simple and general:

As locals of Singapore, what do you guys usually do for fun in your own country?

For example, I'm from Malaysia and as similar as we are, we're not the same.

So to answer your question @gstc82, what we do for "fun" is basically eat. Our food is one of the only saving graces of our country.

If friends or foreigners were come down to Malaysia and ask for a tour or something, I'd probably bring them to delicious eateries all day.

Sure, we have malls and stuff too, but where its REALLY at for us locals is the food and eateries. Its the Malaysian way.

For fuck sakes man I dont understand how can this question be so offensive or off putting to you guys. Its really ridiculous.

Hi

It is 'offensive' if you think it is offensive.

So if a foreigner simply ask a malaysian...'hmm...i wonder what do Malaysians do for fun in KL as I Realised that in KL, there is nothing but shopping malls and traffic jams'.

I on my part simply just assumed that KL Only offers air con malls and 'nothing' else. I also am lazy to just google and see for myself other vibrant activities the city has to offer.

If you rephrased your original question to

'As locals of Singapore, what do you guys usually do for fun in your own country' I am sure my countrymen will gladly tell you what you can do..like if you enjoy bird watching, do you know there is a place in Orchard Road where you can watch migratory birds.

So there you go..

Interesting how simple sentence can lead to 'World War III' online. What seems like an innocent query can be interpreted in many ways by many people with many thinkings. Even as I type, I am second and third proof reading to make sure I am politically correct or risk stepping on a mine-field myself.

Base on individual interests, there may be 1001 answers.

I personally like to spend time in a leisure swim, walk in the nearby park, or even sitting somewhere near home to watch the people go by. You will be amazed by the silly things I do. I can lean my head over a bench and watch the clouds go by. Remember fun times I once had as a child with other kids trying to make out shapes of clouds. At times being together with love ones, chit chatting, gossiping or even just silently watching Telly in the close proximity of people you cared about can be a blessing. Maybe to some, I didn't really answered the question as a tourist how can I spent more rewarding time in a foreign land. Frankly it is up to individual, whatever to your fancy. Shopping isn't my greatest interest but I do like window shopping, seeing what's in stalls, the creative things that appears in the market. The kind of people who shop in the shops. The way things are displayed. The price tags of some of the items. I can spend hours in a small super market going thru items to my fancy but being a cheapskate, 9 of 10 won't be buying anything but will be enriched with all the infos I picked to understand.

When relatives visit, we don't normally do shoppings or fancy sourcing of local top favorites to eat. Sometimes a simple meal we used to do, brings back fond memories. The joy of skilled and unskilled working together to prepare food, whether edible or not at the end is also fun.

The point is, there is fun all around us. When we are alone, or when we are in the best of companies. There can be boredom in similar situations. Can be bored when alone yet can be bored in the presences of good companies when my mood is not in the right state of mind. In our chase to be ahead in life, we seems to have lost much simple stuff. I once arrive in the office all excited claiming I came across little yellow butterflies along the way to work. I still have very vivid images of some colleagues faces when they heard me (I must be a nut case). For those who didn't realize our island used to have small yellow butterflies maybe because back than there were more plants with flowers. Over time these had been replaced with green shrubs as flowering plants attract bees and bees may harm the people. Along with the environmental changes, some things were lost.

Anyway, maybe I don't make any sense at all here but it seems much better than some topics/replies tat had been popping up. As the saying goes, if you can't beat them, joined them.

As for you not ever visiting Malaysia, its not uncommon.

I get it though. Cause when I go down to Singapore, i feel like Im in a "better Malaysia" thats run by chinese people hahaha!

If you're looking for culture, its quite true that the other countries are better - especially since you're from Sg

Most Singaporeans that come down here either have family here, want to shop, or want to eat.

that s true ! esp when they have a family and then drive

many keep telling me most of the stuff are cheaper over at Jb, yes some yes,  not all

but as a single, I don't even need to cook

how much groceries am I to buy back? + I m not even driving, I felt like a maid if my purpose is to shop for groceries
The feelings are so weird  just to chop a passport and to queue for a bus for that.......

so sometimes, I will 1st consolidate all the shopping needs(not so much of groceries) and come over once or twice per year
to me, while the murals /artwork @penang  looks interesting, tiongbahru and some areas have it too (melacca 's baba nonya culture cum bit of portugese is nothing to wow me too)
I m sorry that your UNESCO site has become a mess ...I hated the idea of ruining something peaceful into something very touristy

It is rude to ruin the origina feel
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/penang-s-historic-george-town-a-heritage-theme-park/3389762.html?cid=fbad

The same situation for japan now, everywhere is flocked by tourists esp from the Philippines or the thais (pls note I m not a racist), and prolly Indians too

while I agree that fun is created by ourselves, however whether sg is fun or NOT, I m very clear of that.........

I have Taiwanese friends visiting Singapore, they are utterly disappointed by our 1 and only UNESCO site: botanical garden

I agreed w them , they were all crying foul , what ? this kind of garden is UNESCO?

They have aplenty in Taiwan, just tt poor Taiwan is under China, hence they couldn't apply for UNESCO...
I felt so sorry for them(though I honestly don't find anything magical about Taiwan, if I  need onsens and beautiful sceneries, japan is my alternative, not Taiwan
many sporeans luv Taiwan is cos they could speak common language, the Phili, Indians and etc cant handle mandarin)
I was NEVER proud when Sg got awarded for that and my sporean friend quizzed me what is then a deserving UNESCO good example, I quoted an eg : Mt Fuji

Mt-fuji.jpg
(if any parks can easily be an UNESCO site, then the whole world is UNESCO as it is created by GOD)

Food aside, over the festive season, Sporeans could only flash photos of 3 venues:

1) Resort world ie Univ Studio - as there r kids (so link to Kidszania - all complained so expensive, KL has it too, and sentosa)

2) The Flower park ie gardens by the bay (as mentioned above) linked to the whole MBS  (artificial lighting that could make pp wow!)

3) If not , the closed down option of Tanjong pagar railway
This year one more popular photo venue due to PokemonGo - ie Changi airport (go all the way to the east for them)

No1 flash a library photo, or museums, even in the I-found-it-boring Taiwan, some libraries are a wow!

I held a job in Singapore from July 2008 to December 2011. In the initial months, I tried to make my way down to the more notable destinations after work, like Orchard Road, Chinatown, Little India, Geylang Serai, Changi Airport, etc to check them out. Especially during festive seasons, one may wanna find out the kind of festive mood there (unconsciously comparing with that back home, I'm from Malaysia btw :P).

Occasionally, I may dine out with some of my Malaysian friends who are working there. That's when I had the opportunity to check out the different malls across the island, going to as far as Woodlands, Marina Bay and Jurong East (I stayed in the northeast/east side at that time).

Over time, it did become mundane cos all these places are full of human traffic and coupled with work stress, I didn't really wanna be stressed out any further. My friends have also gotten busier so I was very much left alone to fend for myself. That's probably about the time I started checking out the saunas in Singapore, which I must say there are quite a lot, and that's where I got to know my godbrother. I was staying in Tampines then and he's at Bedok Reservoir. So we could meet up quite regularly for meals, movies, workouts at Tampines Clubfitt and swimming at Tampines Stadium or Safra Tampines on weekends. He taught me breaststrokes as well.

There are probably only 3 locations I very much like to be at in Singapore, Pulau Ubin, Jalan Kayu and Tanjong Beach at Sentosa. I'm a person who prefers to be closer to nature and being in wide open spaces and since much of Singapore are of tall buildings, these are my getaways.

Pulau Ubin has some of the untouched natural spots to me (I wouldn't visit the artificial parks in Gardens by the Bay). Taking the board walk and looking out to the vast sea, cycling by the former mines and taking in the beauty of the deep blue waters (swimming there is not allowed though) and fascinated by the existence of those old kampung-style Chinese houses which are long gone from mainland Singapore. Then there are the trees and flowers.

Jalan Kayu offered me the simple view of a street lined up by a row of old shophouses, pretty much the same view you get in smaller laidback Malaysian towns. This is where i probably enjoyed some simple taufoo-fa, beh-heh-chee, mamak and Malay food.

Tanjong Beach gave me a tanning spot other than the tanning deck at Tampines Pool. This is the quietest beach on Sentosa, unlike Siloso. One could probably doze off under the breezy coconut trees while baring your whole body (with trunks on, ofcos) to the Sun's mercy. :)

I had a fourth spot, namely Punggol Road End. It used to be just a simple beach that overlook Pasir Gudang on the other side. But later when they constructed the concrete seaside walk that connected to the marina, I stopped going there. I went hiking Bukit Timah once just to get the feel of scaling Singapore's tallest peak and got to know quite a number of tree species there. It was a short hike though, unlike the hills in Malaysia. The only downside was I had to board a bus to get there, which was rather time consuming. The Circle Line was not up then.

"You like who you like lah. Who cares if someone likes the other someone because of their race? It's when they hate them. That's the problem."

To be honest, food bonds people... and there's plenty of food here in Singapore. Although I cannot vouch for the authencity of the food taste but hey, it's about bonding with people and creating new experiences.

So, many many places to eat but they don't usually congregate at the same spot. Need some googling work.

Cafes too... galore. Grab a cuppa, slice of cake and sit down to do some people-watching or read a book.

Singapore is never shy of things to do, you will constantly be entertained and will always find opportunities to try something new, be it an eagle eye view from the Singapore Flyer, a cable car ride in Sentosa or a scuba diving experience in the azure blue waters surrounding the island. Singapore is also known for eclectic street fare, served in hawker centres such as Tiong Bahru and Maxwell Road.

Here are some Best Things to do in Singapore

Guest What a Shame.

As one ex minister who was given the boot said, "We take fun seriously" and this best sums up what the country currently has on offer.

However it was a totally different world before 2003 when Singaporeans had lots of fun and affordable places to go to. Sadly, they have been progressively removed because a lot of these high class people and their protected chidlren envy the masses having fun there.

Most recently, my partner and I started re-visiting the Wildlife Parks and that was quite fun. Beyond that, Singapore, albeit small, still has a lot to offer.
There are many places where you can go for a hike; a personal favourite of ours is the Green Corridor. If you are up for it, you can always visit the other islands surrounding mainland Singapore. If you are a fan of coffee, you can jump onto the hipster bandwagon and check out the cafes popping up in every corner of the country. Exploring restaurants is also an option. Given the number of food joints we have, you find yourself spoilt for choices regardless of your budget.

I'm going to end of with something really cliche. Sometimes, and maybe even most times,  it is the company that makes the day fun, not what was done per se.
