Typically this will manifest as stickyness and/or discoloration, and it comes from phthalates and the porous surfaces hiding bacteria & other gunk. You want to change to new ones when that happens. Alternatively, get toys made with better materials ($$$) like silicone/metal/glass, these don't suffer from the same issues and can even be boiled in water for 100% cleanliness.
