As we all know that Hong Kong and Singapore are both colonized by British, unlike Singapore which seems like a tree forget it's roots, Hong Kong even though may still a dog to the AMDK but at least they speak Cantonese in everyday life as in do not forget it's roots. Just a thought.

Yes, I agree.

First of all, Hong Kees have balls. Especially, yellow umbrella campaign. They wanted to fight for themselves and I salute to the Hong Kees who can do it. We can see how cohesive Hong Kees can be fighting for themselves what they want. Singaporeans are just to coward.

You see, Hong Kong adopted Cantonese has its long history. All HK Gov't bodies and agencies are using Cantonese.

In fact, most (not all) lectures in Universities are conducted in Cantonese.

You will be surpised the ang-moh, Ah-Cha (black skinned with beard) and many non-Chinese residing in Hong Kong understand and speak Cantonese well.

Actually, it all boils to how Gov't popularise the nation language of Cantonese.

Now, here is the real history why Singapore adopted "English". It it not because of multi-racial and using English as main communication language among other races.

The adoption of English in Singapore, started with LKY. The old man wanted to adopt Bahasa Melayu right from the beginning because he is a Peranakan Baba and wanted all the Peranakan blood to "rule" Singapore. Remember, LKY shut-down Nantah (now, NTU)? It is the historical truth but not many people want to talk about it. That tells us the old man rejected Chinese very much at one time.

Eventually, LKY began to learn Chinese and speaks Chinese at much later stage. And it is impossible for him and too late to push for the use of Chinese. By the way, his son admitted that he hated Chinese language because it was tough for him and nobody speaks Mandarin at home.

In all LKY speeches in his early days (60s-70s), all are only in English and Bahasa Melayu! In the formation of Parliament, English is widely used. Hence, all Gov't bodies use English.

To draw a conclusion, there is no way for Singapore to adopt Mandarin. English will be main language because all Gov't bodies use English. Because of that, Chinese language used is unnecessary. In our local context, Chinese language is only useful to communicate with mandarin speakers.

In official matters, if you use Mandarin, people look down on you. I am serious. This is how Singaporean Chinese look down on their own skin.

Next, A failure in Chinese (GCE 'O' level) still can go JC/Poly. In GCE 'A' level, flunked mother tongue also no problem. The root cause is education. In Singapore, without a fair score in English, anywhere also cannot go.

Guest Guest again...

Just don't understand why you need to display this inferiority feeling against Ang Mohs. Is something wrong with you?

In my eyes Singapore is faring better than most surrounding countries, maybe due to somewhat English spoken here.

There are Ang Mohs who major Mandarin...

LKY cut a lot of ties with the British. Justice system, destruction of colonial buildings...

If you think people look down on you because you speak Mandarin then you have a problem with yourself seeing it this way.

Many loosers are always jealous because of others who drive bigger cars, smoke fat cigars and have married a pretty girl. But they fail to reflect why they weren't able to achieve the same...

I can counter your reasoning too:

Take Taiwan. They proudly speak Mandarin. English is just used in business.

Your statement is not correct anyway. As someone with business and operations in Hong Kong you can submit government forms in English, write to officers in English. it's dual English - Cantonese.

I honestly recommend to you to seek some specialist or therapy. Your inferiority complex will kill you otherwise on day...

You are so funny because you are so ignorant about the two diiferent places you mentioned.

Give me a choice, I would choose Singapore over Hongkong as a place to stay anytime and a place to work.

Singapore , is a independent sovereign nation who has its own military armed forces to defend itself, we are our very own country , Singapore 's border security is our own matter, we decide who comes in and who gets to stay.

Hongkong may have its beautiful dim sums and delicious wanton mee,

but it is still a forever part of People's Republic of China, forever inseparable,

IF Hongkong yaya too much hor, all China needs to do is to open the borders of hongkong , and flood the whole place with 50 MIllion mainlanders and these people will work with the central government to stay in hongkong and don't leave hongkong, just clog the streets and eat all the food of hongkong and make hongkong collapse, Hongkong's security and defence is now under the People's Republic of China hor,

HOngkong is not an independent country but s semi autonomous region of the People 's Republic of China,

I say open the floodgates and flood the streets with Tiongs and ear all the ffod there isand see what Hongkongers can do.

Better not yaya papaya, Guangzhou and Shanghai is poised to take over the finacial life blood of Hongkong.

Have you noticed that Hongkong dollar is issued by the HSBC bank.

Anytime can run road one,hahhahahahaha

Guest Good for Singaporeans

Malaysians can choose to study Chinese indepent Schools or government school after they complete their primary school education, government secondary schools use mainly Malay as media of instructions while Chinese indepent schools use mandarin in teaching, but English is the language used for teaching in many private universities in Malaysia. They must pass Malay and history subject in order to get SPM certificate. Very stupid eduction system for Malaysians.

but the Malaysian education system is one of the reason of the big segregation of the different ethnic groups in Malaysia.

Plus the Malaysian goverment has reduced the amount of English spoken in schools and universities resulting in fewer knowledge of English within the younger generation.

Government forms can only be handed in Malay.

What rubbish! Malaysian government has forsight and a vision. No wonder malaysia is leaps and bounds ahead of singapore. In the world stage, malaysia commands a much higher standing as compared to singapore. When malaysia talks at world events like United Nations etc, the world not only listens, world leaders heed the advices of Malaysia...when Singapore speaks, the world claps only and sometimes laugh...

When I travel, when people ask where am I from, I so paiseh to say I from singapore, when I say I from malaysia, they are extra nice and many upfront say they respect malaysia very much.
