George W. Bush did much harm to LGBT people

The recent death of former US president George W. Bush is burying the US under an avalanche of eulogizing of the famous man.

Here is an article that is a little less flattery of the man, who held back on an adequate response to the AIDS epidemic.

The Media Is Erasing George H.W. Bush’s Catastrophic Harm To LGBTQ People

It’s no surprise that after the death of former president George H.W. Bush we’re seeing media pundits, advocates and popular historians promote a rosy view of his tenure as president. In the era of Donald Trump, there’s a tendency to portray every Republican leader of the past in a nostalgic, sugar-coated way.

The first thing that caught my eye was a report on CNN’s website that included a tweet from the president of Covenant House, a charity that runs shelters across the U.S. for homeless youth and which has a historical connection to the Catholic Church. The tweet included photos of the former president and the late first lady Barbara Bush hugging children, implying that Bush was an important advocate for people with AIDS.

Perhaps that was what Bush “believed,” but it was far from the truth. Bush was as captive to the evangelical right on social issues — and thus a decidedly Republican president — as was his predecessor, Ronald Reagan, who cultivated religious conservatives as a potent political force and bowed to their anti-LGBTQ agenda as the AIDS epidemic mushroomed in the 1980s.

Reagan’s history of callously ignoring the epidemic while thousands died is well-documented. Bush, at the outset of his term, promised a “kinder, gentler” presidency than the man he’d served under as vice president. He even gave a speech on the AIDS epidemic in 1990, which was long on compassion but short on strategy and commitment to funding. During the speech, in fact, Urvashi Vaid, an invited guest and then the executive director of the prominent National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, now the National LGBTQ Task Force, took the unprecedented and heroic act of standing up and holding a sign, “Talk Is Cheap. AIDS Funding Is Not.”

Bush, in the end, bowed to the same extremists Reagan did when it came to AIDS and LGBTQ rights. As The Washington Post noted, Bush allowed evangelicals to mature as a movement within the GOP after Reagan brought them in, rather than pushing back.

You all got what you deserve anyway. For voting in all the dud presidents,  from lying  double talking Nixon,  to the philandering 'Royal Family of the United States Keeeneeedees, then Peanut Farmer President who was the best but well loved becos he did not want  to dominate and kick ass the 3rd world neighbours surrounding countries, then there was the president that was so charming that women could not keep his manhood out of their mouths, the one whose wife was so matronly, and whole single child was so gangly and toothy, spent more time checking out interns and their ability to get on their knees more than right policies,

then we have the spaghetti western gun toting father son duo , whose son also drag the US intoba long expensive war, and loss of life and limbs, and turned out there was no WMD.

wow, this was all before internet and social media and russian  intervention in politics .

Had 2 Hollywood presidents, the one who shakes his head while talking and the Television President.

It wadvall chosen by the people wgo thought they knew best.

That what WHO deserves?  Those who deserve it got richer, and the destitute got poorer.  As always.

Bush bowed to the EVANGELICALS!  Why does "evangelical" have such an anti-gay ring?

The God of Israel, the God of Abraham, how could he be real if he had such an ignorant concept of human nature?  As a consequence, the Abrahamic religions Judaism, Islam and Christianity condemn homosexuality like it is some evil, while in reality it is some trait of individuals like the color of their eyes.  And how does the trait of homosexuality compare to the attitude of the biblical, "evangelical" society putting down women like they were the slaves of their domineering men?  This is something that should be many times more sinful than homosexuality.   This is why the Abrahamic religions don't deserve any credibility, and the US Presidents who bowed to one of these religions with its extremism don't deserve any special consideration, alive or dead.

BTW,  you who spit so much on American politics,  how do you explain that in YOUR country so many people embrace the evangelical churches with all their anti-gay agendas and 377A-s instead of worshiping the advanced Asian philosophies like Buddhism?

Thank God it's over !!

One week of praising, eulogizing, worshiping, adoring Bush is finally over.  He is finally done!

I don't have much against Bush but not much for him either.

He was a good man who fell for the wrong ideology of conservative republican.

I have respect for his passing away like I have for any normal person.

Ceremonies, marches, pomp resembling the days of kings and emperors,

and reserved today for the worship of fantastic Gods.

With the cost of all that abuse,  maybe 1,000 children could have been given life saving medical care.

Why you go dig out a thread more than a year old, and one whom the only person who cared about it is the TS himself, who made 3 posts in it, before it died a natural death...? 🤨

Well said from someone who can pick out 10 year old fights and chew on them endlessly.

Why need to bother as if you own BW?

WELL SAID, Guest.   You responded to a person who picks fights of any age.  The only ones he cannot pick on are future fights, since he barely exists from one day to the next. His daily fights are the only emotions that keep him alive.

Not only is it more than fishy.  Steve has already said many times in his other posts that Trump is a terrible President.

Yes, Trump has always smelled like rotten fish.  Until he got impeached.  Now he and his cronies have added the stunk of their decomposed souls, which permeates through their skins.

As long as the leopard do not change its spots, the fight will go on, and the leopard deserves to be chewed on till it dies.

Why do the title of this revived-for-no-good-reason topic, as well as the first paragraph by the threadstarter, mention George W. Bush when the article is about the death of his father George H.W. Bush? Neither of them did anything to help LGBTQ people, but if posters want readers to take their entries seriously, please get the basic information correct.

You need to take your self-loathing attitude back on another long vacation away from this website. So ridiculous. The Huffington Post has been a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights in America and around the world. Your attacks on SJW (Social Justice Warriors which is a right-wing slur) are also pathetic. Would you prefer to support "Social Injustice Warriors" who want to kill all gays and minorities (including Asians in majority white countries) and restrict women (including your mother and any other female relatives) to never being able to go anywhere but the grocery store, kitchen, and bedroom?

There might be some left-wing people who take their ideas too far, but they do so with kind hearts and good intentions, even if they are ultimately misguided. People on the left-wing want a peaceful world with equality, and yes justice, for everybody, regardless of gender, race, class, orientation, or whatever. Those on the right-wing such as your personal hero Donald Trump want a brutal world where "might makes right" and a wealthy privileged few hoard all the money and all the power. In the USA, you would be a Log Cabin Republican, but Adolf Hitler had gay supporters in the beginning as well.

That is my view I share  you don't like it you can ban me out of your view.  Huffington has lost its ability to do good work a long time ago and it is all about click bait and living off the misery of the LGBTQ people. They have little love for them but if it gets them clicks and like they will keep doing what they do but yet their very action and how they run the business and what they do with the money is never about your precious community and to you.

We don't need to be lachrymose over how many middle-name initials get in the name of these two individuals,  who don't deserve much attention anyway.

George H.W. Bush is also George W. Bush and also George Bush.

I don't use always my middle initial either.

Well said.  I like the Huffington Post because it is very informative and it takes the democratic view in issues.  But I also don't like the latest changes they did to their website.

The analogy of Trump with Hitler is usually well fitting.

Please give some proof that the Huffington Post lives off the MISERY of the LGBTQ people, for whom they have little love.

If you cannot come up with real proof, you will show that you are one more troll here who spits out provocative ideologies for unknown reasons.

Don't try to gaslight us with a Donald Trump style answer like that. Just admit you made a mistake. It's not the end of the world.

The initials of both George Bush presidents (HW and W) are absolutely necessary to distinguish them from each other, just as it is necessary to always use the middle name to distinguish sixth president John Quincy Adams from his father, second president John Adams.

If W had never become president, it wouldn't matter, but he did, so it does. What doesn't matter to anybody is your middle initial.

I know...  I lose so much sleep at night agonizing over mixing up John Quincy Adams and John Adams.

But why is it "absolutely necessary" to distinguish the Bush-es from each other?  Hopefully we can forget about them as soon as possible.

And I am so fortunate that there are a good number of people for whom me and my middle initial matter! :)

That attitude is exactly what is wrong with your country. John Adams and John Quincy Adams were US Presidents, just like George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, and therefore have held the top leadership position in American history.

Just because you hate the Bush father/son, and don't care enough about your nation's history to distinguish between the Adams father/son, will not erase them from existence. They lived, and they did what they did, and pretending they never existed or calling them by the wrong names will not help any future Americans (if Donald Trump doesn't destroy your country soon) learn from their successes or failures. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it to some extent, and right now, Trump is trying to replicate the 1820s (except with himself in power instead of James Monroe, JQA, and Andrew Jackson).

Your responses are very much like Trump, as you type all kinds of nonsense, rather than admitting you made a mistake and correcting it. What's next? Will you post a link to a bio of GHWB with the "H" crossed out with a Sharpie marker?
