dannyGuy Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Thanks, LupCheong. Great pictures !!! Just wished some of them would've been retained as they were like Raffles Place and Clifford Pier.Do you have pictures of old Orchard Road with the wet market in it?
Guest time traveler Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Thanks for all the pics.... sigh life back then was so much more idyllic and easy-going. I wish I could be transported back in time. The padang looked better back then, before it was scarred by the awful durian theatre and the hopelessly ugly looking UFO above the Surpreme Court. I felt a tinge of sadness when I saw the photo of the National Library, sadly torn down by myopic city planners for the sake of "development"... "destruction" would have been a more suitable word.
Guest Retiree Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 I missed those buses. They look so beetle-like. Wish we never change and I love the street stalls and open spaces. Now with all the buildings and crowd making things squeezy and even the heart of man has became narrower too. Changes has made the govt rich but has the life of peasants become richer?
calv Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Am not too sure if I am suitable to comment because of age... but then again, you know something? The pictures brought me to the many movies that I have watched which depicted the people of the 40s and 50s where life was very very simple, and much slower. Somehow, development is bound to take place, no matter where... hence, with the presevation of old buildings like the Capitol Theatre is good in that sense...
Guest ttttt Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 So nice to see these beautiful retro pictures again. Got more?
geisha Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 (edited) I believe most of us have done school projects on such a topic before...But still, almost everytime I see such pictures of old Singapore landmarks, somehow I do miss these places.I'm not that old, so I don't get to see all these places in their original glory...I recall doing this project on Hong Lim Park: Do u know there used to be a police HQ before it was moved to Hill Street (now the Information & Arts building)? What is left there now is just a small part of the original structure, the small building at one side of the park is now the neighborhood police post. The original building was actually a huge victorian-styled structure, I can imagine how majestic it would be if its still standing today... too bad, it was burnt down by a big fire.Love  Geisha Edited August 15, 2008 by geisha
maturemedium Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Thanks for the pics..miss them tooDun think the younger gen. will think much about it. Don't worry, Be happy
Guest Retiree Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 When I was young, I love going to the aquarium world inside the National Theatre. Then I developed a liking for tropical fishes and started to keep my own aquarium till now.
Guest Guest Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 It's good to post or consolidate the pictures here. More can be found in link that I came across in sammboy forum. There could be more than one link. Most of the guys in this forum will find them quaint, not being of that generation.
Guest gazarette Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 omg!! van kleef aquarium! man i really love that place. it was so cool to visit that aquarium with its dark dark room haha... too bad it closed..
Guest HLP Cruiser Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 The neighborhood police post used to be a Post Office. What is left there now is just a small part of the original structure, the small building at one side of the park is now the neighborhood police post.

Guest Nostalgia Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Any pics of the Yaohan of the 70s and St Joseph's Inst before conversion to Art Museum?
miles Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Thank you for the pictures.I remember 'Aces Go Places' at Jurong Drive-In Cinema, and they had speakers at every parking lot. running, cycling and yoga.
Guest buck wheat Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 I think it is even more interesting if some forummers can share their lusty sex encounters at these nostalgic sites, then it is historical, anyone want to share their naughty escapades at the former National library, it was very cruisy before it got demolished , very happening in the male rest rooms.
Guest Raiden Alpha Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 (edited) Nice pictures. Edited August 29, 2013 by Raiden Alpha

Guest Guest Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Thank you so much for all these nice pictures which bring back really nice memories It's really sad that for the sake of "modernisation" , our government choose to tear down all these buildings and replace with either cold office building/shopping malls and even worse more and more condominiums The country may reach Developed Nation but ironically it's the poorest in terms of culture, historical structures compared to Japan, European countries and Korea, etc
samdiggin Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Great thread! though i wasnt born yet but its nice to see these

Guest Guest Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Back when Singapore Girl was actually Singapore Girl. Until they realised that on the stage of globalisation, many Singapore girsl cannot meet the mark.Likewise for the guys, many are ugly. With gym work, they are known as prawns.
