BudakFit
For me if someone wanna play a gay character, it is best to give to those cis guys/gay or bi..reason they have the experience etc...so they can portray more realistic passion to it. For straight guys, they have NO experience, in their mind is all about norm kissing etc....the passion is not there.
upshot
We need to steer clear of those baseless narratives of identity politics infesting the many facets of the Western world. Doing so, we limit our understanding to our own potential, unbalance the respectful tolerance to attaining an amicable and peaceful co-existence racially and culturally with one another thorough our differences. To ignorantly adopt the likes of those virtue signalling Western buffoons peddling racial politics; cultural stereotyping victim Olympic to silence, intimidate or extort an unearned upper hand among other despicable agendas will eventually lead to their own demise if that has not already begun to happen in recent months. People getting shoved by the lies and being too generously quiet tolerating the drama thinking this is just a small 'niche' issue. But they starting to see, it's more than taking a foot-hold screwing their lives and rice bowl, it has worn thin and people are pushing back. Hard. Anyway, discussion for ANOTHER DAY in another thread...... What's the definition of "ACTING"? Loosely, acting's defined as the performative art of pretending to be someone or something in a performing arts or character roles in movies, TV series or plays. Competent acting to portraying a certain character that best represents what the director envisioned, be cast and competent to take direction to fulfil the role. Why should it matter that ONLY A GAY PERSON FOR A GAY ROLE. You go down that rabbit hole, where will it end up? What will be next? Do we need a “certified” War Hero be allowed to portray a 'war hero' in movie only? Do we need a "real" one legged man to play a one legged patient and a real “Doctor of Neural Surgery” to act the role of a Doctor who can perform “spinal surgery” on the one legged patient actor? See how ridiculous this is going to get yet? In your view, only a gay actor should play a gay man or play a gay man well? If you believe that, you have no idea what it takes to be a talented good actor. It's more being gay. Or maybe you think Channel 8 got great actors.(most of them sux) A good str8 actor can play a good gay actor. And a good gay actor can play a good str8 actor. Full Stop. While you view life through a bias tinted microscope on the issue, you need to pull back your focus and understand it takes a broad scope of risky factors collectively to make a successful movie, for example creative risk, financial risk, star casting risk and many more critical decisions. All in the hope, when it is put out to cinemas, people will pay to watch, and you make profits. Easy to sit on the side line making suggestion when your own money is not the one put at risk. Understand, when you start to make up such "stringent rules for who gets casted", people can turn the table on your "RULES". Learn not to fear the internet social bitching game overtime (In fact, they're learning that now). And decide to not making big budget movies starring leading gay roles, and gays can't take on str8 roles since they are not str8. And leave you out to dry. You still want to play the rules hard and fast like gays for gays? If you realize how disingenuous a ploy that is to resort to in order to gain a 'free underhanded pass' minus the hard work to get the top money (or roles), you're either damn naive or guilty of supporting this toxic identity politic to con undeserved successes. Nothing's free in this world. You either work hard to earn the role or you don't get it. MERITOCRACY is still the fairest ways forward, even if it's not perfect, sometime. Peace..... I am out of here.. stage left. Phil 1 Quote ** Comments are my opinions, same as yours. It's not a 'Be-All-and-End-All' view. Intent's to thought-provoke, validate, reiterate and yes, even correct. doncoin
It is called acting. If they can do a job and convince you on screen that is who they are, then I would say the actor has done a pretty good job. Phil and G_ZK 2 Quote Love. Phil
Remember "Staircase", with Rex Harrisson and Richard Burton? Good example of what Upshot and Doncoin have written.

There is a much simpler response to this thread: since immemorial times, gay actors have successfully portrayed straight men! So many handsome (gay) actors have kissed beautiful girls on the screen! One of the earliest male on male deep kisses was in John Shlesinger's movie "Sunday Bloody Sunday" released exactly 50 years ago. Many viewers were shocked, not only due to the social morals of the time but because Peter Finch was almost aggressively heterosexual. Murray Head was also not gay.
