cadlad
hi guys i encountered a problem which i hope you guys can advise me on. i was online using my six-months old laptop at home. a friend told me about a (non-p0rn) blog of someone (hosted by angelfire), so i visited it. it immediately had a pop up advertisement even though my browser is quite strict on blocking pop-ups. i can close the pop-up but when i tried to close the browser, i couldn't. so I log off and log in again, only to find that i couldn't log in to my msn. then i realised that the characters that appear on screen does not tally with whatever i typed. i reboot my laptop, but the problem is still there. but when i logged into a guest account instead of my own account, the problem is not there. i logged into my own account and did virus scan with 3 different anti-virus (norton, AVG, trend micro, the free download versions) but only tracking cookies were detected. but i doubt tracking cookies have destructive powers of this degree? questions: 1) is this a virus at work and how can i remove this virus? 2) if i move over all my data into another account and continue working from there, will there be repercussions? i understand that programms and softwares i installed can;t be transferred, but i dont think i have a choice now. i'm just worried whether the "virus" migrate to other accounts in future?3) any advice or recommendation for what i can do now? my friend is puzzled as his laptop does not have any anti-virus program installed, and he didn't encounter any problems after visiting that website. but i guess there could have been some powerful firewall in his computer that i didnt have. thanks in advance! Maybe virus, maybe glitch (as when u log into as guest account, everything is fine?)Go to control panel, check under "Keyboard" see whether everything is okthen control panel under "regional language" make sure the selection tabs are"English" Quote When I Think It, I Do It, I Win It! cadlad
thanks for your replies! irish cream > it's a laptop, how do i replace the keyboard... can't reformat, as i didnt get the microsoft disc when i purchased the laptop. oralb > it's not operating in a different language. the affected letters are only those in the top right hand portion of my key board, the rest still type well. (eg. Q - Y is fine, but the key U will type 7, L will type 3, etc). will go home tonight to check on the control panel > keyboard!

I believe you are infected with malware/spyware and/or virus. Run Spybot and your antivirus program.2. Data can be transferred. But some programs/softwares installed might give you some problems once you moved them to another drive.3. If after running spybot and antivirus and the problems persist, run them again in Safe Mode.
