External Hard Drive

Thinking of getting an external hard drive to save all my data files. Thinking of getting either a 500GB or 1TB one.

What is a good brand to get? Seagate and Western Digital I heard/read are the best bets. True?

Does anyone know the average price for these brands and its corresponding sizes? I hope to get it under/about $100.

It'd be an extra bonus if anyone knows of any promotions on going now for these items.

Also, is it necessary to get 2 drives to back up the back up? I've heard stories of hard drives just going "dud" on you.

I bought mine at IT fair last Sept. Seagate brand 640GB for just $99. Good buy?

if you do backup everyday/weekly for work purpose i think it ok. the external hdd will act as 2nd copy of your original data on your pc/notebook.

I guess, since cost saving is important here, that you are looking for a 3.5" external hard drive. You might want to consider saving further by getting the hard disk and an external casing. Taking this route, you have to DIY to fix it and thereafter format the disk.

Popular choice is Western Digital though many said that Samsung 1TB 32mb cache 7200 rpm disk is quieter and faster. It is good to look out for bigger cache.

Prices for an internal hard disk SATA2 range from S$60+ for 500GB to S$80+ for 1TB. Price for an external hard disk case is from S$60 + (you may get cheaper ones in Sim Lim Square). Alternatively, you may want to wait for SITEX.

If your data is important, it is always good to have more storage.
