Guest Guest
I saw the news on TV last night on an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws presentation to someone. Is this a Degree exhange programme? I give you mine and you give me yours in return? So, why this is degree so "Honorary" if it is giving away like door gift? Can someone enlighten me? Guest Guest
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honorary_degreeAn honorary degree [1] (Latin: honoris causa ad gradum) is an academic degree awarded to an individual as a decoration, rather than as the result of matriculating and studying for several years. An honorary degree may be (and often is) conferred by an institution that the recipient never attended. The degree itself may be a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree — the last being by far the most common. Usually the degree is conferred with great pomp and ceremony as a way of honoring a famous or distinguished visitor's valuable contribution to society. The university derives benefits by association with the person's status and so enhances its networking and publicity.

Guest Guest
Ok, the key word is the degree is for "Decoration". So, you walk into people house, people honor you a Degree and next time, he comes to yours, you give him one Degree back. Ok, ok, now I understand. Hmmmmm .... there is a "benefits" tag attached to it.

Lungker
A few years back, it was reported that some successful entrepreneurs here were paying about US$50K to some no-name unaccredited American universities to get an honorary degree. One of them was the lady running a chain of slimming centres. I forgot her name.I see a Dr. next to the name of someone who can't string three proper sentences together and I want to laugh. Just googled and that lady is Dr. Theresa Chew of Expression International. To quote from the article :Mrs Chew, who received two honorary doctorates from Kennedy-Western University and the University of Hawaii in 1999, says she is not bothered by talk that she paid money for the honours. “What I do speaks for itself,” she says simply. The last few years she had stopped using the Dr. next to her name. The link to the full article is below.http://justwomen.asiaone.com.sg/news/women/20061129_005.html Please play safely! jazz
Honorary Degree DOES NOT necessary mean "Doctor", unless only if Honorary Doctorate is awarded. HOWEVER, recipients of an honorary doctorate do not normally adopt the title of "doctor", though it may be appropriate to use the title provided it was conferred based on some tangible and relevant achievement. In many countries, including the UK, Australia, NZ, and the US, it is NOT considered correct for an honorary doctor to use the formal title of "doctor", regardless of the background circumstances for the award. So in Theresa Chew's case, she is no no... not a Dr Chew. If not, we would all have to call Kermit, Dr Kermit the Frog as he (or rather "it") was awarded the Doctorate of Amphibious Letters by Long Island University in 1996
worldangel
Since a few months ago, I had been receiving junkmails from overseas mainly US asking me whether I wanted to buy degrees from some unknown universities (not sure also whether there is such university over there), right from bachelor, master up to doctorate degree. Checking the originality of any degree in applying of new job depends on the company itself, as far as I know applying job in any civil service, their Human Resources dept would do the checking once the applicant has passed his interview. worldangel
Professorship cannot la....Hahaha I just read in Wikipedia that the title Professor in some countries like Austria, Romania, Serbia and Italy means high school teachers. Source: WikipediaThe meaning of the word professor varies. In most English-speaking countries, it refers to a senior academic who holds a departmental chair, generally as head of the department, or a personal chair awarded specifically to that individual. In some countries like in the United States, Canada and India, individuals often use the term professor as a polite form of address for any teacher, lecturer, or researcher employed by a college or university, regardless of rank.In some countries, e.g. Austria, Romania, Serbia and Italy, the term also applies to high school teachers. a good oral sex makes your day, a good anal sex makes your "hole weak"
