In 2009, about 960 renounced their Indonesian citizenship to become Singaporeans; about 1,180 did so in 2008.Many who give up their Indonesian citizenship are married to Singaporeans, said an embassy spokesman. The embassy does not keep records of their race or religion, but their names suggest they are a mix of various ethnic groups, from Chinese to Javanese and Sundanese, he added. The drop in 2010 was probably due to Singapore tightening its immigration policies in the run-up to the 2011 General Election, said Singapore Management University's Professor Hoon Chang Yau, who researches the culture and history of the Chinese in Indonesia. The Government had in 2009 tightened the PR and citizenship criteria to ease concerns over the influx of foreigners. But fears that Singapore could become even more strict may have led to the subsequent increases, he added. "Some Indonesians may have felt they should take up citizenship immediately or it would be tougher to do so in the future."Indonesian community leaders here said Singapore is a top destination for emigration as it offers good jobs, safety and good education for their children. But Mr Yoga Dirga Cahya, president of the Indonesian Community Forum in Singapore, said thatmany do not renounce their citizenship because of strong ties with their families back home. The forum is an umbrella body for about 10 associations for Indonesians in Singapore, and organises events for almost 200,000 Indonesians living here.Mr Yoga also does not foresee a wave of Indonesians leaving their country in the next few years, because its economy is thriving and opportunities to set up businesses are growing.Besides, Indonesians need to retain their citizenship if they want to own land or property to set up a business, he added.Prof Hoon also noted that there are no strong "push factors" like the 1997 Asian financial crisis, when Chinese Indonesians left in droves as rioters targeted their homes and businesses.Ties between the Chinese and the Indonesian government, as well as other Indonesian ethnic groups, have been on the mend since then, said Prof Hoon.Indonesians who have taken up Singapore citizenship, like executive Eggy Laxmi Putri, said they did so to have a better life. The 37-year-old native of Jakarta, who became a Singapore citizen in 2008 after marrying a Singaporean teacher, said: "I could not find a full-time job in Jakarta even though I am a university graduate."Ms Fiana Santoso, 26, a bank operations analyst who married a Singaporean bank executive in 2011, is a native of Palembang in Sumatra who became a Singaporean last December. She said: "I plan to start a family in the future and I see Singapore as a good place to raise my children."

Guest 蒲松龄
On another subject, someone mentioned somewhere about some SAF commanders and officials being foreigners from China and elsewhere. I am not sure if this is true, but if it is then we should be very concerned. If (and that's a big *IF*) say, Singapore were to go to war with China, whose side would these officials be on? I hope MINDEF has thought about the consequences and repercussions before they implemented the idea of hiring foreigners to fill these positions.Until now, nobody dare to stir this up. SPH do not dare to report. This man (LG Neo Kian Hong)(see below picture) sitting right under the nose of NgEH should be responsibile.I wonder how can we stir this issue up? Commissioning of foreigners (particularly these "tiong-kor-kiia") as SAF Officers is outrageous! In future, these "tiong-kor-kiia" will climb on-top the head of most Singaporeans. Be prepared this day will come! Those "chiong-sua-chiong-haii" soldiers, got only 2 or 3 lizards. Whereas, foreigners selected into OCS and commissioned with kit-kat bar on their shoulders. I am very sure those people who went through the hardship of OCS in the past may feel the unfairness too! Most people can take it or accept when local Malays are generally not "allowed" in Navy Diver, Air Force, Commando and SOF vocation. However, we cannot take it and accept when our CB Gov't commissioning these alien (spies) as SAF Officers! Gov't gone way too mean! Also, those Singaporeans who can't get into OCS. should know the reason. There are surplus of aliens serving National Service now. Guest 蒲松龄
YOU SEEEEEEE..... What is this shit?Posted on 18 Feb 2013'Disturbing' to see so many foreigners at SAFRA clubhouse Are the SAFRA clubhouses meant for locals or foreigners wonders STOMPer pat, after seeing a number of foreigners enjoying the facilities at the Toa Payoh branch. The STOMPer wrote:"SAFRA clubhouse for NS men or foreigners?"I brought my kids to the newly opened SAFRA Toa Payoh today. In fact, as I am writing this letter I am still at the kid's indoor playground."It is quite disturbing to see so many foreigners here in a clubhouse supposedly built using public funding for locals, especially national service men. Instead, foreigners are the ones enjoying the facility."The indoor playground has a number of Caucasians with their blonde hair babies enjoying a nice cooling Sunday afternoon in a newly built an air-conditioned kid's play facility."I can’t help but wonder, would these Caucasian children one day serve NS? Chances are, they will follow their parents back to their home country when their work stint here expires."There's also a high chance they will finish their schooling here, take up all the space and enjoy the facilities here. Just before they turn 18 for NS, they will renounce their PR and move to US or Europe for further studies."I went to the third floor and saw a group of Filipinas (see photo). At least 20 of them were enjoying bowling at the clubhouse. It makes no sense to me because I am not a SAFRA member (I don’t see why I need to pay to be a member anyway, because I did put in two-and-a-half years plus ICTs for this country – but that was before the government decided to give free one year free membership which won’t start until April 2013)."So I am paying the same as the foreigners – Filipinos, Caucasians, whatever. SAFRA membership should be given free to all national service men. Why make us pay when the total membership fee is probably a small fraction of what it costs to build these places plus cost of maintenance."Why are foreigners allowed to enjoy these facilities at the same rate as most locals here?"Should ask the man (in the above picture) why he allows "fake" Singapore Citizens with "real" pink IC and foreigners to use SAFRA facilities?EngEH definitely says: "SAFRA facilities must be utilised and keep cost running low. These facilities are meant for public and not to be kept among SAF personnels".We expect EngEH to give this statement. - Stupid statement isn't it? :yuk:

If everyone stop shopping in court, FTs will be retenched and go home.If everyone works overtime, FTs will leave Singapore with no money earned. joshboy
Yeah u know of some locals who scored bad grades, I also know of many foreigners who didn't do well and buy fake certificates......also there are many foreigners with bad grades in their own country, like there are many Singaporeans with good grades overseas.U r a Moron trying to act analytical. U must be one of those with terrible grades. Go private school lawhen foreigners don't do well, they get kicked out immediately. If its fake certificate, then its up to the. And even if its fake, if they don't do well, they will still be kicked out of uni. The problem is we are giving too much concessions to the locals. Locals have this advantage is that even they dun perform, they are still in Sorry, I've already graduated with honours in our top school. . so go screw urself Yes, there are many foreigners with bad grades in their own country.. so what.. do we care? Guest PKRAnwar
Its like Malaysia bumiputera policy, where Malays get in easily with lousy grades but Chinese have to strive very hard to get in, even when full As. This is the same where locals are lousy but get in, but foreigners are ostracized. This is from a local perspective that doesn't want the university ranking and standing as well as perception to go down the drain because of a 'Me first' mentality. So what?! We, Malays are contented. Malays have our own united thinking. Our Malaysian Gov take care of our own people, take care of our skin colour! We protect our own job for our own citizens. Malays do not like to be criticised like that! Kurung hajar! Cina singapur gov, everything wants to be nombor satu. Sacrificising your own people is Singapore problem. We Malaysian hope your nation cina mati cepat. So that more Malaysians can come into Singapore to take over singapur people job. Bodoh!
Guest MINDEAF
We are already admitting locals like "CEO" (we call them bosses), and others into nus.. the grades are terrible. Some local students can actually graduate a BA in 4 years or 5 years , and still don't get honours because their grades sucks. I know of one who scrap through his uni life with a fail but probationary grade of 1.5/5 . All these are locals mind u. Even in the newspapers, parents are complaining "Why my daughter CEE or CCE or CDE' cannot get it? I was like WTF.. fuck off pls with these grades. Go to a private uni or something and don't complain. I Yes. I agree with above statement. Thank you for proven it! That's fantastic! I'll cut-&-paste (from previously posted by one ah-gow). See below: Singapore wants to be competitive and be world number ONE in education. Sacrificing and kicking local Polytechnic and 'A' Level graduates ' (your own people leh) ass out of local universities! Local universities are achieving world class standard. To maintain our top-notch world class ranking, Singapore Government must absorb foreign students to up keep our local universities in world top status. And this is main reason why these universities are trashing locals people out. Please accept Singapreans who are god darn stupid and unable to enter own local universities. The good ones enter local unversities. While those with half-past-six results chose overseas for further studies or give up. No wonder our mighty Singapore gov't welcoming foreign students, preparing to substitute its population. Isn't great?

Thank you and we shall remember your above post! In concluding, the PAP must remain strong and must not allow these goon-doo Singaporeans with low grades come into Singapore's universities! It does not mean that even if one has fufilled NS liability, these local government universities must accept him. IT IS FACTNUS must be number oneNTU must be number oneSMU must be number one Without these foreign students, Singapore world class tertiary education will suffer. NUS or NTU or SMU can't make any world achievement without these brilliant foreign students. Think about that, We must welcome and depend foreign students (graduating in future) to contribute Singapore's economy! Singapore wants these foreign graduates locally to work for Singapore and giving them free PR and Citizenships ultimately.
