Why?
7 hours ago, kidster said: In other countries, for eg., Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, the cost of setting up a small eatery stall is low compared to Singapore. You can still make a decent living and pass time in a more laid back environment. Not all of the stalls are lucrative. Not everyone has cooking skills. In YouTube or other documentary videos, earning a good living in a relaxed setting is typically manufactured, so you don't completely understand what goes on behind the scenes. We also don't know the rules, laws and safety of other countries. It is not just money, but a lot of works. It is necessary to distinguish between dream and reality when defining retirement. Retirement is the moment when you don't have to spend a significant amount of time physically serving others, include doing part time work or freelancing. The goal of retirement is to achieve emotional, physical, and mental balance without breaking the bank. You are completely in charge of how you spend your time, free from outside distractions. Even if the environment is just relaxed, the days of working, reporting, and serving people should be over. By then, trying to make money—no matter how small—should not be your top priority. Enjoy travelling, visit places, bird watching, whale watching and go smell all the flowers in the world.
Rice60640
For someone who’s lived in Singapore, USA and China for over 25 years and then finally decided to return to Singapore, it’s a matter of who you can count on for support when you are old. For me, there is no one as reliable as your own family member. Yes you can have a partner but one of you will go first and then what’s going to happen with the surviving partner in a foreign country? Yes, you can have friends but how much do you trust or even want to be a burden on your friends when you are in need of help? We also need a job to keep up with expenses when we are younger and so how confident are we about employment due to suitability or language requirement. In retirement, are we even allowed to continue living in that country? What legal rights do you have in that country? How involved can you be with the healthcare or finance of your <friend>. What about the healthcare system? There are so many things to consider. Maybe something viable is travel back and forth until some change in Singapore? I don’t think it’s a simple decisi9n but I wish you the best of luck. passinthenight
Why?
One day, everyone without children will have to cope with loneliness. There is no other way. Rather than considering where or when to retire. In the end, it's about learning to be independent, self-sufficient, considering it as a skill and making it a priority in life, leading a healthy lifestyle, and paying great attention to what you do and what you put in your mouth. The best kind of retirement is to love your body, love your environment. Even the greatest place on earth won't make you happy if you strive to indulge yourself with toxic habbits. appboy
Is anyone thinking of migrating to Taiwan? What are the pull and push factors?

Be warned, war can happen anytime under their current government. Many rich individuals are trying to get out of the island, not in.

auscent
I think migrating requires certain trade offs and contentment mindset. Otherwise we are just running from 1 unhappiness to another.
