Can anyone even decipher this PRC's Mandarin without the help of subtitles? Even the host had problems. I think even the Malays and Indians in Singapore can speak better Mandarin than this. LOL.

Many foreigners working here are trying to imitate the Singaporean accent, especially the Filipinos.  Almost perfect until when I asked them their names.

There is a marked difference in the accents mentioned and the singlish accent. The Singlish accent mangles not just the consonant ends and vowel lengths/placements, but it also destroys the auditory beauty of the language by its staccato rhythm, predictable monotonous stress patterns, and irritating intonation and inflections dictated by one's vernacular. Read any English- written poem using this vulgar accent and you immediately degrade yourself to a Phua Chu Kang wannabe.

Now I know why people say our Singaporean accent sounds bad. They actually expected us to go Shakespearean with it! Well... this is Singapore, we live by our styles and our ways. To those who find our accent is so grindingly offensive, feel free to leave this island. Thou shalt not be missed! LOL!

It is perfectly normal to speak with a local accent, but will be better without the meh and la and ma.

Language is versatile, and there is no right or wrong accents. English is the language of the English people, as well as the other countries which the English people settled in, such as America, Canada and Australia etc.

Because of the dominant world socio-political order, people have a tendency to elevate the English spoken by these "native" speakers as the "correct" or "standard" versions, and these "native" speakers in turn tend to use their own English as the "standard" benchmark to judge the English spoken by other "non-native" speakers. Yet, people don't realize there isn't really objectively any right or wrong way of speaking a language. The Chinese have their accents, the Jamaicans have their accents, and Singaporeans have our accents, and so on. What is worthy of mention here is that in each of these examples, the "non-natives" have successfully appropriated a "foreign" language and incorporated their own unique national cultures into it to create a whole new way of speaking English that is uniquely theirs. Such creative cultural appropriation is a commendable way of taking control of something foreign and building something new out of it, rather than merely blindly absorbing that foreign entity wholesale and in turn fueling and sustaining the notion that that foreign entity is the supposed "standard" that should not be questioned or altered. A good example of such lazy and thoughtless absorption of the foreign as the "standard" is clearly seen when we see people like the Filipinos who blindly emulate the American way of speaking English, and in turn argue that individuals from countries that have "localized" English like Singaporeans speak "poor" English. Looks like these people still live in those sad days of colonized inferiority and continue to blindly follow whatever the west seems to be the "standard". You may think you speak good English just because you speak like an American or a Brit, but stop to think, is that accent even yours to begin with?

There are people who stayed for decades in the West and still come home to speak local accent English.  There are also some people who stayed for a year or two there but speak with a slang, which sound so fake.  To me, speaking English with a local accent is still tolerable than those trying to fake like a English native.
