HendryTan
Dug out this very old BlowingWind post that answers this question of meaning of AJ.Check the original BW post at http://www.blowingwind.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=188&view=findpost&p=933 Quote Nobody seems to be able to explain to me what AJ stands for except it means gay. From wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_gay_terminologyAy-jay or A-jay - Pig Latinised form of gay, with the guttural 'g' converted to a 'j' to further disguise its form. Coined by English-educated schoolboys from some of the better schools in the 1990s. Quote A.J. - a popular term probably a derivation from Pig Latin. Mainly used about the Chinese/locally educated community as well as prevalent amongst the younger generation. The term is often used as code, in situations where the speakers wish not to allow outsiders to understand the conversation. Example: 'Is he AJ or straight?', 'My classmate is also AJ.'Not clear, go read that old BW thread, several further there elaborate further : http://www.blowingwind.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=188&view=findpost&p=

darkflame
Isn't AJ a corruption of the pronunciation of 'a gay' where you pronounce 'g' like 'j'? Quote I'm always running after you. You are my ideal. You are me.
Guest nudetral
The word AJ has been used to indicate someone who is gay. What does the term AJ exactly mean?
Guest Guest
It's a form of Pig Latin. http://blog.dictionary.com/pig-latin/ What exactly is Pig Latin, is it a language? And how is it a mystery? October 5, 2010 by: Dictionary.com 121 Comments What language do these words come from: ouch-cay, appy-hay, and ender-tay? If you guessed Pig Latin, you’re correct. Pig Latin is not actually a language but a language game that children (and some adults) use to speak “in code.” Pig Latin words are formed by altering words in English. Here’s how it works: First, pick any English word. We’ll use “dictionary.” Next, move the first consonant or consonant cluster to the end of the word: “ictionary-d.” Now add “ay” to the end of the word: “ictionary-day.” That’s all there is to it; you’ve formed a word in Pig Latin. We don’t know for certain how Pig Latin got its name, though we do know that the game has nothing to do with Latin. That’s an intentional misnomer. There is a mention of it in an article published in a magazine in the late nineteenth century. And, supposedly, Thomas Jefferson composed letters in Pig Latin. Another enigma is the “pig.” No one seems to know why it’s a pig, rather than a squid or a zedonk. A handful of Pig Latin words are now an accepted part of English slang, such as “ixnay” and “amscray.” (“Nix” and “scram.”) Other languages have jargons similar to Pig Latin. For example, the Swedes have Fikonspraket, which means “fig language.” The rules are different, but the effect is the same. Back slang is another English coded language. In back slang, the written word is spoken phonemically backwards. For example, “yob” is “boy.” Back slang supposedly has its roots in the markets of Victorian England, where sellers used it to converse behind customers’ backs. We expect you have questions about other quirks of English, codes, slangs and such. We welcome your suggestions of topics to explore. https://sgwiki.com/wiki/Singapore_gay_terminology A.J. - a popular term probably derived from the Pig Latin word for "gay", i.e. "aygay", with the guttural "g" softened to a "j" to further disguise its form. It was initially used by English-educated schoolboys but later spread to and is currently mainly used by the younger generation of local Chinese-educated gays. The term is often used as code, in situations where the speakers do not wish to allow outsiders to understand the conversation. Example: 'Is he AJ or straight?', 'My classmate is also AJ.' Expand I think an outsider in this case can still guess what the speaker means very easily. Wouldn't it make more sense to also change 'straight' into Pig Latin -- 'traitstray' for example -- 'Is he AJ or traitstray? Two of my classmates are also AJ but the rest seem to be traitstray.' Makes sense to me anyway.
