If the ring is made with a material that is stretchy enough, you can put it on whether soft or hard. But if the ring is less forgiving with stretchiness, it's best to put it on when you're soft.

Easier to put it on when soft. I'll normally choose the stretchable type. Feel safer. Can stretch to adjust the blood flow &/ cut it off incase of emergency.
