Inconsiderate Neighbour Discussion (compiled)

[Guest Creep Neighbour]

My unit is the second last one. When my old neighbor staying in the last unit moved, the new ones extended the unit space by shifting the door to cover their part of the common corridor.

 

Because they gave no more common corridor, they hang their plants outside my window and treat the space outside my window as their front porch. I said to them a couple of times but they just ignore.

 

What can I do? I've never seen people so thick skinned.

Corner unit neighbour are usually more territorial than the corridor units. Especially, if they are the elderly folks who love plants.

Not sure if using oneservice app will help or not, but will usually be forwarded to your town councils. Since it's your property, you can make a complain with pictures.

That is very cruel to the plants.  I would suggest you hang your washed underwear over it, to give the plants its much needed sun-shelter and you get to dry your underwear at the same time.  Make good use of the "facilities" provided.😃

Your laws may be different than the ones in the US.  But here this kind of encroaching on a common area would be in violation of building codes.  A corridor is a common area for everyone, even those who live far from the end.   Maybe you can consult with the administrator of your building to see if the neighbor did something illegal, and if so, make a report to the proper authorities.  About the plants,  you could make a request by formal certified letter to the neighbor asking him to remove his plants from your window, if this is your property.

 

Maybe the legal way is too cumbersome.  But at least, if they hang their plants in a space that belongs to your property, you should have the right to move them away, and make your own use of that space.  You can let them know, indirectly or nicely,  that it is their choice to have a friendly neighbor or an enemy who will do anything to get his way.  There is no reason why a gay person cannot have a thick skin too!

if they are those old uncles or aunties who love plants and love to hoard sorry u dont have power hahahahaha they are not gonna give a damn and even look at you like what the fuck do you care lol. just report them if you want, but im telling you wont win like my experience hahaha

Best thing to do is to report to hdb if their shifted door is even authorised in the first place? 

 

Based on most corner units, if they extended the gate past the riser, this is illegal as the servicemen require access to do routine checks. 

 

My parents stay in a corner unit, with 2 balconies. So there is often ample space inside of a corner unit, hence there is less corridor space outside (and the higher price tag)

 

Even though my own parents stay in corner unit, I agree that your neighbours are greedy and inconsiderate.

 

You need to get evidence, lodge complaint, especially if they are using the space outside your window with noise.

What I understand that those corner units can buy the common corridor space. And cover it up so it becomes an extended part of the apt, covered rooftop or uncovered.

How to complain, if your neighbour is one of the PAP members?  Still remember the Ivan Lim case?   I used to have a neighbour who claim the space is theirs and that their son is a PAP member.  No joke, but very disgusting.

It's legal for corner units to buy the common corridor space and then construct covering over it. Must get HDB approval. Many corner units in my estate have done it.

 

What I dislike is, the area outside my window becomes their front porch. Doing gardening, washing the floor as though the area is theirs. Even when servicing air con, those contractors park their trolleys outside my apt.

 

I've spoken to them several times they just ignore. The owners are in their 60s. Many other annoyinh habits.

While it is true that Singapore is borderline totalitarian, one should not expect that the Party will cover illegal activities by one of its members.  What does it mean "PAP member"?   If your ugly neighbor can be a PAP member, can you become one too?  Then it is PAP member against another PAP member, a more even field.

If they are in the last unit and you are in the second one,  this means that they have to pass in front of your unit to reach theirs.

 

Get some information from @desmond1971 about what disgusted him most about passing in front of the unit of his demented neighbor,  and put the same obstacle in the hall in front of your unit  (not that I think that a dirty floor is such a big deal).   Spill some strong glue on the floor past your door and where the neighbors have to cross, maybe you can get them stuck there! 

 

If they are in the neighboring unit, you may have some wall in common with them.  Get yourself a good driver for a bass speaker, attach it firmly (but removabe) to this wall and connect it to your stereo, then play at night a recording of a mean dog barking.  If they complain that you have a bothering dog, maybe against some regulation, ... you don't.

Two shadows will not make a person any whiter.  My clear conscience kept me away from that party or anything to do with them. I was probably born with a very clear mind and can easily sieve  behind the thinking process and the work of a person.  In the mid 90s,  I have already felt a strong disdain for that party, due to reason inexplicable  inside of me.  It has nothing to do with being biased, one sided view, but when you have heard them enough,  and see enough around you, you began to realise something is at stake, fake or being misplaced.  Partly coming from a Buddhist (now agnostic), a spiritual person and from a well cultured family background that led me to believe something is morally "missing" in that party.   The rest became history in Singapore, that proved everything I have feared 20 years ago.  As such, I must say the voters are actually 20 years behind my thinking and since leopard will not change its spots and the pandemic has magnified their spots,  it is best not to associate anything with it.

Yes, so much power in the hands of one family for decades, does not smell well.  Even if they are not as criminal as the Assad family, their hanging to power cannot be moral.

 

About your countrymen who keep this family in power, it must be something similar to the American Blacks during the days of slavery: should they be happy to receive sufficient food and shelter from their rich owners, or should they risk fighting for their freedom and face hardship?

 

It must be easier to be an agnostic when your moral guide, Buddhism, does not have a deity.  Aside from the belief in karma and reincarnation, the rest is philosophy.  So you don't run the risk of committing the "sin of pride against your God, challenging his doctrine".   🙂
