Guest seekingadvice
My partner will undergo major surgery so I want to ask those who had similar situation before, did you guys make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in addition to a will? zyjd
I did an LPA because I'm estranged from my family, and since my partner knows what I'd want done when I'm mentally incapacitated, I nominated him as a donee. This is in addition to the will I've already drawn up some years back as well. The LPA is quite a powerful piece of document, though, as once a psychiatrist deems you mentally incapacitated, your donee will have power over you and can make decisions on your behalf... so it really should be given only to someone you trust with your life. Remember the Yang Yin saga with the rich old widow? That's an example of how an LPA can go horribly wrong. renoma1069

Even if he is not going for the surgery, as long as there are financials assets or decisions which you guys need one another to settle on behalf, you both should do it. For any LTR, it is good to make the LPA. What @robin said is the reason I did it. Do know that the process to get the LPA approved takes time. May your partner have a speedy recovery from the surgery. Wishing you with all the best wishes. Going through (any) lawyer makes the process easier. I chose that route. auscent
I did it at one of the recommended clinics; by LPA office. Simple task: go there, the clerk tells u simple ques doctor will ask such as if you know what date today is, then done. You need 2 people donees to sign it, at different times. I did my LPA myself: downloaded the forms at the below link, and went to a clinic in Tg Pagar Complex to have a certified LPA issuer endorse it for me. https://www.msf.gov.sg/opg/Pages/The-LPA-The-Lasting-Power-of-Attorney.aspx Currently the fees for making an LPA is waived till March 2023, but you still have to pay an LPA cert issuer (usually recognized doctor or lawyer) to endorse your form. If I remember correctly, I paid $32.10 at Tg Pagar Clinic to get the doctor there to endorse it for me - I believe they're the cheapest LPA cert issuer but this was done in January so I'm not sure if the rates have changed. ** If you prefer to go to a lawyer to do it, an LGBT friendly lawyer can be found at the below site: https://www.linglawcorp.com/ I think they charge around $80 for endorsement, and if you need them to liaise with the office of public guardian (OPG) it's an additional $150. They are both LGBT friendly and extremely discreet so I would trust them with very personal stuff like LPAs and wills. ** After you get the form endorsed you need to send it back to the OPG at Lengkok Bahru... the clinic or lawyer's office should provide an envelope with the OPG address for you to post it. Once received by them, there's a waiting time for around 3 weeks (iirc) before the LPA takes effect. Hope this helps! IkuTube
Guest seekingadvice
Thank you very much for replies everyone especially to @IkuTubefor your wishes and sharing your valuable information so we can be better prepared. May I ask how much it will cost to prepare the legal matters if you engage a lawyer?
Steve5380
Here in the US my boyfriend and me made a power of attorney for medical decisions, by which I had the power to make medical decisions for him if he was incapacitated. This document was freely prepared at the hospital, with some strangers acting at witnesses (not the medical personnel). I used this power of attorney to request that he be taken off medical support when his situation was terminal. What I didn't know is that as soon as he passed away this power of attorney became void. So I could not decide how his body was disposed since we were not married and I was not a member of his family, but his older brother took care of this. In retrospect, we should have prepared another document to give me this power, but we never imagined that he would pass away riverrobles

It was a reasonable price as his Will was very straight forward. It is good that you contact the lawyer that @zyjd provided. Do take care, Guest seekingadvice. To share further with my personal experience. When my late partner was at his end stage, we arranged for family meeting. The LPA played an important role where the family accepted my role. The family recognized my part. The LPA made them to respect our choices. It was a heart breaking meeting but it had to be done. We talked about death and how things needed to be done on his demise. Looking back, I am glad he did the LPA and the arranged meeting.
