Here's a warm welcome to budding ingénue, Julie Tan, who will join the ranks of fellow full-time MediaCorp artistes this December and dive head-on into full-time acting after graduating from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) with a Diploma in Theatre.

After two years at the negotiating table, the 20-year-old actress recently inked a five-year contract with MediaCorp, which officially commences in December 2012.

Last seen in the action-suspense Ch8 drama series, "Unriddle 2" and the 2011 year-end blockbuster, "A Song to Remember", Julie revealed that she won't be starring in any upcoming productions due to her conflicting work and school schedules.

In a phone interview with xinmsn, Julie shared that she is currently preparing for a theatre competition held in Beijing for the Asia Arts Festival in mid-May, and will film a Chinese movie as the lead actress in July during her school holidays.

"I was offered to do a few drama series but I could not take them on due to school," she quipped and added, "I wanted to focus on my education before taking on additional work. I'll be doing the movie during my holidays so it's not going to affect school work."

On her contract with MediaCorp, Julie said, "I'm comfortable with the contract offered and feel happy working with the company. It's all about trust and we have a very happy relationship."

Julie let on that her "flexible schedule" sealed the deal for her. "I'll have more time on my hands. This contract allows me to take time off - when I don't have work - to study and pick up courses in other countries. "

The lanky lass originally wanted to further her studies in England after graduating from Singapore, but her plans had to take a backseat after much persuasion from her mother, who wanted her to stay in Singapore.

"I was not too happy with my mum and was initially upset when she did not agree to my plans to study abroad. We argued over this and I took a step back after thinking about it; I'm glad that I've managed to find a balance in all these," she expressed.

The wanderlust explained, "I've always enjoyed going overseas and understanding different cultures, so I want to fulfill that aspect of my life. The company is supportive and understanding, and they will allow me to take time off to attend month-long or week-long courses abroad if my schedule allows."

Commenting on her much-raved performance in "Unriddle 2" as the deaf and mute Fu Lelin, Julie was glad about her marked improvement and hopes this progression will continue for her future shows.

"Once people think of you in a certain level, they expect more from you in future. Personally I'd expect more from myself as well. I believe in this industry, you have no enemy, the biggest enemy is yourself. The only way to push yourself is to fight yourself.

"My mum says I'm pushing myself too hard (laughs). But it's good competition and keeps me grounded and occupied."
