i liked those local themed family (light) drama pushed out during CNY... got me a bit emotional. haha

 

a few after thoughts :

 

1. Richard given many heavy scenes and did shined with them. acting is apt and natural. 

2. ZWL wasn't given much. a warm up throughout. although she used to be given heavy dramatic roles in the past. she left the industry too long, and i think this is her ad hoc job to kill time. no matter. good to see her back.

3. Lina ng really touched me with the limited scenes she was given. quiet subdued acting but with big impact and made those scenes very poignant. see pics.

4. Desmond not bad. esp liked his down to earth look (his character). acting has also matured.

since everyone is discussing about star awards, i shall give me take on who will win the acting categories this year. i only watched my star bride, so i know it's kinda unfair for me to give the following analysis.. but i believe that mediacorp has never gave out these awards based on performances alone... there are many other factors and these trends have been reflected in the choice of winners in the past... so.. aiya.. just for entertainment la ok?

 

Best Actor

Jeremy Chan 田铭耀 — Crouching Tiger Hidden Ghost 卧虎藏鬼

Chen Hanwei 陈汉玮 — Recipe of Life 味之道

Desmond Tan 陈泂江 — Key Witness 关键证人

Romeo Tan 陈罗密欧 — Soul Old Yet So Young 心里住着老灵魂

Xu Bin 徐彬 — My Star Bride 过江新娘 (Chung Shee Jie 钟世杰)

 

I think this year could be between Desmond and Romeo, but i'm leaning towards Romeo because he hasn't won the Best Actor before and this is already his 4th nomination in this category. I heard his performance in the show that he was nominated for was not bad, cos he had to act as some old man or something, and judges always like this kind of stuff cos it's like a breakthrough. Dark horse could be Xu Bin, but he is not contracted to Mediacorp, so whether Mediacorp wants to honour non contracted artistes with one of the biggest award of the night, it's really up to them. If they give CHW this year again, the audience will scold and will also get bored cos it's so predictable. I think Mediacorp also wants to make the show interesting to retain the viewers. As for Jeremy, erm, maybe next time.

Honestly, it's time that Huang Biren bag another Best Actress award. I have watched a few snippets of her performance on recipe of life and it was really good. She has won three times before, and that was when before she left Mediacorp. She should have been nominated and maybe won in 2015 for 三个愿望, but that time Mediacorp only honours their own contracted artistes. Now they have changed the rules, HBR should really win again and at least keep up with Zoe Tay's record of four wins. But again, she is not contracted to Mediacorp, so it's the same case as to whether they want to give the award to her. Though they changed the rules in 2018, the winners eventually still went to their own contracted artistes only, so this is barrier that HBR has to beat. As for Chantalle, I think she could be a dark horse but it's really too early for her to win. If she is gonna pull a Fann Wong and win the award before her seniors in the category, it's not very ideal also. I believe she can win the award in a few years time, but at this point it's really too early. Joanne is another dark horse and she has received accolades for her performance on Mind Jumper, but she is not the hot favourite to win as compared to HBR and Chantalle. If she wins this year it's gonna be like how she won the last two times, people will call her kelong (even tho she deserved it, especially her performance in little nyonya, really better than JA what!). As for the two other two, i have not heard much of them and probably not favourite to win also, so probably just filler spots.

 

Best Supporting Actor

Chew Chor Meng 周初明 — The Heartland Hero 邻里帮

James Seah 谢俊峰 — Key Witness 关键证人

Jeffrey Xu 徐鸣杰 — The Takedown 肃战肃绝

Zhang Ze Tong 张哲通 — Key Witness 关键证人

Zhu Houren 朱厚任 — My Star Bride 过江新娘 (Chung Yongnian 钟永年)

 

Erm, I really can't say for sure who will win in this category, so I have to use elimination method for this. Ze Tong is probably nominated as a form of encouragement, so chances of winning is low. James Seah has pretty high exposure in the recent years, and I also believe they nominated him for the same reason as Ze Tong as well. Ze Tong has mentioned that he is rooting for Jeffrey to win, but honestly he has been embroiled in pretty controversial incidents in the past year so whether Mediacorp wants to give him the honour is really a big question, and he has already passed the days when Mediacorp is trying to push him. But I think if Mediacorp is not giving up on him, the award might go to him this year. If not, the award will go to a veteran artiste cos really no reason to give it to the young. CCM performance in Heartland Hero very similar to 118, like no breakthrough. And now we are just left with ZHR, whom I believe is a hot favourite to win cos his performance on the show is like 不温不火 but very 细腻 (姜还是老的辣), and since the show was very popular, he might just 沾光 and win the award.

 

Best Supporting Actress

Cynthia Koh 许美珍 — My Star Bride 过江新娘

Lin Meijiao 林梅娇 — My Star Bride 过江新娘

Bonnie Loo 罗美仪 — Key Witness 关键证人

Lina Ng 黄嫊方 — Key Witness 关键证人

Rui En 瑞恩 — The Heartland Hero 邻里帮

 

I know no one is gonna care or have noticed this, but everyone in this category except for Rui En was nominated in the same category last year, and none of them won. So I think Rui En really no chance this year, cos this category is really not her pet event. She might have a higher chance with the other show that she was a lead actress in, but this one really it seems like they put her in as a filler. This is Bonnie's fifth nomination, and if she is not going to win, she is gonna break Paige Chua's record for most nominations without a win. I think the reason why she hasn't been winning is because her performances were good, but not good enough to win cos her category always got people who are better than her. So I'm not sure if Mediacorp wants to give chance to her this year and finally honour her with the award, but I believe she is neither the hot favourite or dark horse this year, so if she wins it's really because she has been waiting for this award for god damn too many years already. Lina is an awesome actress, but again she is not a contracted artiste, but my gut tells me she could be a dark horse and break Mediacorp's tradition. As for Cynthia and Meijiao, they are probably hot fave to win cos of the show they were nominated for, but I really can't say for sure about their chances. Meijiao has won twice, so maybe they want to give chance to other people. It has been a while since Cynthia has won an acting award, and judging from her nomination streak in the recent years, it could also be her time this year.

I dun really like the drama, supposed to be a 团圆 drama during CNY but the whole show is so sad and melancholic throughout till the last episode.

 

I find Desmond Tan’s acting pretty average only. His role is not difficult to deliver and has nothing much to 发挥. Just need to act serious and down to earth, which most male artistes can do so. I think Pierre Png’s and Yahui’s roles are more difficult than his.
