Hi

I managed to finally enrol the windows 10 extended update. So now expires Oct 2026. After that what happens, it will stop working? Or just limp along until infected due to vulnerabilities?

Everything will still work as usual. No longer supported means you may not get security updates, so good IT practises (like don't anyhow click exe files etc) will become more important.

Will getting anti virus help protect if no more security updates?

That is one option, or maybe by Oct 2026 you will be looking at getting a new PC?

1. You mean you are not using anti-virus now?

2. Depending on how old your computer is now (My 2018 notebook computer still officially supports Win 11), how reluctant you are to upgrade your hardware and how tech savvy you are, there are workarounds to install win 11 on unsupported hardware.

3. Personally, I would not suggest that you "limp around until you get infected" if you do even a minimal amount of sensitive data on your computer - e.g. Internet banking, gov related activities like those that need SingPass, CPF, online shopping or any similar situation where your credit card information. Log in frequently using public wifis like those from Starbucks, airports, wireless@sg.

4. It will not stop working after the support FINALLY ends, just that they will no longer patch any security loophole that are discovered in the future.

I just use the built in Microsoft protection

My computer is maybe 10 years old? Can't remember.

Too bad cannot use climate voucher to get new computer

Wow, still usable for a 10 year computer. Mine spoiled after a few years 😅

Is buying a new one challenging? Now laptops cost not more than $1k for basic ones. Higher end laptops for normal functions can cost $1.5k to $2k.

Unless you're gaming, it could cost $2-3k.

Will you be my valentine's? :D

I just went to try the MacBook neo. It's really nice and affordable! But not used to interface after using windows forever.

Once the ESU is up, I think I will switch. Time to learn how to use Mac

As in Ctrl C, Ctrl V shortcuts? Hope I don't have to relearn. Muscle memory already

There are some difference, which I think you will get used to within 1 or 2 weeks.

This should get you started.

@radiusulnar, I've same situation as you. Also thinking about Macbook Neo. Tell us when you've bought and give us your feedback man. What about your office applications? How are you overcoming it? I was accessing Google Sheets. It's still not there yet. Quite reluctant to quit MS Office though their business model is shifting to monthly/yearly sub. This is quite a put-off to me.

Anyone got lobang for even cheaper Office subscription?
