My friend grew up haunted by dreams of a woman named Swee Lan, a feeling of displacement that alienated her from her family and left her drifting through life until her grandmother revealed Swee Lan's tragic death during the Japanese occupation. Consumed by grief for a life that wasn't hers, she obsessively searched for traces of Swee Lan's erased home, only to find a condominium built over it, until a chance encounter with a museum volunteer helped her understand that her purpose was not to be Swee Lan reborn but to carry her memory forward. She channeled her pain into documenting forgotten histories, eventually writing a book that connected her to Swee Lan's surviving family and, for the first time in her life, gave her a sense of belonging.
