Party Monster - The Shockumentary (1998)

PARTY MONSTER is the compelling "shockumentary" that probes the seedy underbelly of the New York City "Club Kid" scene in the late 80s/early 90s and its troubled leader, Michael Alig.

Alig was a successful nightclub/party promoter and the unofficial King of the Club Kids. Alig's fame and influence quickly grew. At the height of the Club Kid phenomena, the Club Kids toured the United States with nightclub appearances (even though they didn't have a show as such) and also appeared on several talk shows, such as Geraldo and The Joan Rivers Show.

And then it all went terribly wrong for Alig - with his wild drug use/abuse and increasingly bizarre behaviour - culiminating in the 1996 death of fellow Club Kid Angel Melendez, drug dealer and Alig's room mate.

This alternately funny and frightening documentary not only follows the sad downward spiral that took Alig off the dance floor and into a prison cell, but also examines the nihilistic Club Kid culture that allowed him to boast of his crime. To recount the grim and sordid details, re-enactments are smoothly integrated with legit party video footage and interviews with Alig and his associates (James St James, Elke Alig, Michael Musto and Gitsie amongst others) to jigsaw together a portrait of Michael Alig, currently serving time for the manslaughter of Melendez.

Directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE, 101 RENT BOYS) remade their chilling expose into a feature film of the same name starring Macaulay Culkin as Alig and Seth Green as James St James.
