Hey, I thought of that as well. It doesn't have to be set up by someone. For example, all PLUs can choose to stay near a certain area like for eg. Tiong Bahru or Tanjong Pagar so it becomes "our" place. Then at least we can take care of each other when we are old.But my fear is it would become an orgy village. And by looking at some of the posts under personals, I wouldn't be too surprised. "Do what you wanna do in life despite what others say, it's your life anyway." Buaya
Actually, I think the ad was to tell Malaysians, that no matter how successful you are and no matter how much you earn, who you meet and where you work, it is very important to be with your aged parents. They need you and they are always happy to see you. To them, you are the best and most successful person they know.My 1000th post! Maybe I should go into semi-retirement from BW liao... night listener
The first few mothers were boasting (in a not too subtle way) about how their children were successful in their careers and how much money there were making. But they were to busy to be with their mothers. The last mother's son wasn't rich (drives a Proton) but he had time for her. And she was the envy of all the other mothers.Whats wealth to these mothers in their old age? Time with the children is much more valuable. So guys, spend more time with your parents. Bring them out for walks, meals, outings, and not just during holidays. For those with bfs, don't forget your parents. They may not be around forever.I am making an effort to spend more time with my mom, to the encouragement of my bf. Too bad my bf can't come along....yet. Hopefully so, in the near future. bearhunt
I don't see what is so good about those Thai Insurance Ads.They take tragedy or troublesome moments in Life, whitewash them into your classic 3-part act (setup, crisis/climax, conclusion), sell you senseless platitudes like "the girl who should have only happiness", stage unbelievable and patently ridiculously situations (whoever managed to learn piano just from watching kids play from outside a window - that muscle mimic from Heroes Season 2 don't count), promote dangerous behavior (deliver my baby early? wtf?) and then try to slip you their not-so-subtle hard sell! The nerve!I would never buy insurance from a company that insists on advertising the capriciousness of Fate; celebrating the fact that you are at the mercy of Life which is unpredictable, unreliable and simply out to get you. But hey, if you're our policy holder then you're ok. Life still's waiting in the wings to sodomize you with a spiked baseball bat but at least you can come claim some money from our office after. And please, how dare they even talk about love being all about having someone there to take care of you all your needy, co-dependent life. Of course they want you to buy into the fear because that is what they are really selling.Touching? Moralistic? Inspiring? TopChinese
They are good because they have successfully condensed an emotional episode into a short format. How many ads do you see on Mediacorpse that reduces you to tears within 1.5 mins? You have to appreciate the effectiveness of the ad even if you cannot understand the sentiments behind it. bearhunt
What's there to understand about the "sentiments" behind the ads? I've already spelled it out in my earlier post for what they really are. These ads are nothing but an example of the worst in commercialism and fear-mongering.If you choose to buy into the illusion that Life is a series of "oh shit" moments that you can do zilch about then I guess you'll believe and even celebrate these one-dimensional ads. But ask yourself, do you really want to go through life constantly thinking that you are at its mercy? With a belief system like that no amount of insurance in this world will ever give you peace, ever thought of that?Granted, the function of Advertising is to create or enhance desire for your product, but to blatantly key into the fears of people doesn't speak of any class nor skill. And its even worse when you do so with inaccuracies and ridiculous propositions. As for the ads being effective, if you're trying to sell tissues then sure I guess you could call them effective. But to sell insurance by rubbing tragedy into your face really doesn't require much thought does it? "Just turn on the tear ducts and watch the forms get signed?" Insurance should be about empowering the policyholder, not reducing them to nameless, typical victims relying on the heroism of their insurance company. Can you understand that "sentiment"? http://bearhuntingwolf.vox.com/

Insurance should be about empowering the policyholder, not reducing them to nameless, typical victims relying on the heroism of their insurance company. Can you understand that "sentiment"?I disagree. These tragic events are things that most people in their prime do not think will happen to them. And insurance products focus on managing our exposure to these unexpected events. The usual cheery, buy our policy get an umbrella free approach may not work too well here. Other insurers here, GE Life or Prudential have tried the "Just in case... " approach but I have yet to see any one that have been as heartwarming or noteworthy as these Thai ads. Maybe the melodrama inherent in these ads stem from some elements of Thai culture that are foreign to us. After watching these ads, I did pause and think about whether my loved ones will be protected if something is to happen to me especially in light of all this means testing BS. In my case, the advertiser had managed to grab my attention and got their moneys worth. Its interesting to see why some people will react so adversely to these kind of advertising. Maybe we can better understand his disgust and ahhorence here if Bearhunter could give a clearer explaination for hating these ads.
Guest StoneHeart
You mention about fear-mongering in commercials but life is unpredictable and it is precisely fears of unknowns which makes insurance a valid product. What is wrong with fear-mongering? Is it unrealistic? Unless you tell me you dont think far, fear-mongering about the futures is a commercial trick?I think you read too much into advertising. If you rationalize such sentiments as manipulation of human emotions to buy a product, then you miss the point. It boils down to saving for a rainy day, as simple as that.To me, you are just like those guys who watch Charity Shows and rationalize not to donate. It is about feeling more than you thinking.
bearhunt
A valid invitation.I shall answer the validity of fear-mongering first. Look around you. Everything about the way that humans think the world works is based on fear. We are always fearing one thing or the other. This extends even into religion, the very institution that is supposed to comfort and free us from the hell of insecurities and to allow us to gain a small measure of peace. If you need examples then I suggest you learn to open your eyes, think for yourself and listen to your heart. Fear rules our consciousness and existence. Oh, if I only had a dollar for each time I think an unworthy thought of myself whether in relationship to my work, my dressing, my purchases, even the exciting and unstable times of new love. It is precisely because we humans cannot see the future, cannot know what is happening beyond our local reality, that's what makes Life seem so ominous at times. And so what happens? We start trying to control, we start trying to restrict, to predict, to avert. We go out of our ways literally, and drive ourselves and the ones around us half-mad wasting precious time and energy concentrating on "what ifs". And invariably we end up feeling frustrated, depressed, angry and not at all happy. Especially when immersed in the experience of what is supposed to make us happy! So given this premise, tell me how we need more reminders of how shit can happen anytime? The second and further reaching point about fear-mongering is this: It is hell enough when one person lives Life as something to be feared and guarded against. Multiply that by a family, a block, an organization. Now try a population, an entire planet, the entire human race. Is it any wonder this world contains as much pain as it does? And when you have companies reaching masses of people through technology, feeding them such values like "Life's gonna get you, sign up today", and an entire society buys into it, implicitly acknowledging that those are the rules, believing in them, and acting them out, what happens? Our present reality happens, that's what. And keeping a population cowed in fear also has the handy side-effect of making its members pliant, obedient, unthinking and controllable. So... tell me now, how fear-mongering is innocent. Also, thanks for stating that I do not donate to charity. Which of your independent and accurate sources told you that? http://bearhuntingwolf.vox.com/
bearhunt
I am pointing out that these ads are rubbish. Read my earlier post as to why I feel so.As for the ads' scripting, execution, production values and other such aesthetics lets not bother to argue over such subjective issues as it would be pointless. If you feel the need to give your tear ducts a good wringing, then sure, go ahead and download them to your phone and watch them on your way to work. If they prompted some deeper question in you that causes you to think a little deeper and be a little less selfish, then good. Nobody has the right to question the vehicles of awakening you have chosen. If however, you watch the ads and choose to end up a little more fearful, a little less brave, and a little more anxious and a little less hopeful about your future, then please stop!Because you as a human being with free will, have the power of choice. And for every choice made to head down that dark lonely road of fear, an infinity of possibilities never comes to pass. And each one of these possible futures could just very well be that break you are praying each moment for. Just as you do not put things into your body indiscriminately, you should also watch very closely what thoughts and beliefs you put into your head. Its about living in awareness. And why should I care if people choose to buy into that fear? I believe my previous post addresses that. If this is vague, I apologize. The scope and medium we are discussing this on does not allow for a satisfactory exploration of the bigger issues I tend to deal with. http://bearhuntingwolf.vox.com/

Asura
I love watching those commercials too, very heart touching at some point of times, which we do not see in our daily life cause we could not be aware of whats happening around us.But I do agree with BH as in the fear-mongering theory which for a long time since the creation of advertising media, advertisers are potraying images and visions of WHAT MAY happen to us.But the fact is, those advertisement is TELLING us what will happen to us! This is a marketing PUSH technique which generate needs so that people will go into buying frenzy without calculating the needs, the possibilities and capabilities of their own individual abilities.I am not saying that we are brainless, but rather, looking at the culture of Thais, I believe most of the people will be touch (a guess based on their believes and religion). The slightly educated one would let the ads sent them into thinking, which the advertisement DID NOT tell them that this might happen to you, it merely tells you a story, should the label of their company and maybe phone number, and let you do the linking...Some test I have read years ago regarding mind mapping which more or less everyone is capable, just a differences in usage and power. These mind mapping capabilities of human often leads them to associate what they had seen to actions which may or may not be impulsive.I don't totally agree in the ads being evil, but unless we could read into the minds of the advertisers or thais, we could not even conclude that is the ad doing uneccessary harm to them. But to me, cry if i feel for it, but stay tune and think of what is the message been transmitted here.PS. I think I have not seen such kind of ads in SG, I don't believe our marketing people are idiots, maybe these kind of ads will stir trouble, thats why in SG no one did it? I am not sure. It's just me.... Asura... don't fear, but be very afraid....
GachiMuchi
I think Asu made a very balance point. As much as I agree with BH's point in some areas, I feel that it is a tad too "strongly worded". I totally disagree with "Only me" as bitching. So far I noticed our local commercials dwell more on "facts" and " proof" and some on nostalgia, others on prestige, etc. As for touching commercial, I have yet to see any except when it is during those charity shows. For me, I just take the 1 or 2 minutes Thai commercials as clever story telling. Commercials, which I know they are, are just that; Commercials. I don't take it too seriously. http://gachimuchi2008.blogspot.com
