I prefer doing mine simple.I recommend Bloom Garden Guesthouse which is owned by a really really nice Singaporean lady- Diana Saw who owns Bloom, which makes bags from recycled materials. She has a blog, Cambodia Calling. Visit it. She's real funny and will give you great recommendations. I stayed with my partner at Bloom Garden and had a great time. 25 bucks per night. If you travel solo, it's 18 bucks. Or you can stay at the Pool and Palm Villa, which is owned by a gay Singaporean, Rahim but it IS NOT a gay resort. I dunno how much it costs to stay there tho.These two places have great reviews on Trip Advisor.I cycled my way around SR - from the hotel, to the Old Market (where most of the restaurants are) and around the temples. The sun there can be uber hot so wear sunscreen and bring lotsa water. But cycling is the way to go I think in SR. It's fun.We usually ate at the Soup Dragon or this other place just beside Miss Wong's bar (forgot the name but I know where it is) cos the food there were relatively cheaper. I can recommend you some other places where the Khmers go to, if you want. Good cheap authentic Khmer food.For the temples, we tried our best to AVOID the crowd. Get the three-day pass to the temples for 40 bucks and cycle around the compound.REcommendations:Start the day early, like around 8am. You can start at Angkor Wat, then cycle down to Phnom Bakheng, which is largely empty but it really packs in the tourist crowd at 4pm onwards cos they would want to take sunset pics of Angkor Wat. Then, make yr way to Angkor Thom, visit Bayon, Baphoun, the Terrace of the Leper King, etc amd one of my fave little temples, Preah Palilay, which is off the beaten track, somewhat.I recommend you take the big circuit tour, which covers a lot of the temples in Angkor, as compared to the little circuit one. That way, you can see Bantei Kdei, and the nearby Sra Sang/Easern Baray which is a manmade lake made aeons ago. You can also drop by Ta Keo, Preah Khan and Ta Phrom. Ta Phrom is usually packed with tourists so if you see lots of coaches outside, come back another time. But it is usually quiet around lunchtime cos thats when the tour groups stuff their faces at Siem Reap restaurants.On other days:You can cover the other temples at Angkor and go to the Western Baray, which is another huge manmade lake which is dotted with temples.You can hire a tuktuk or car to visit Kbal Spean and Bantey Srey cos they are located far way from town. The former entails an easy hike uphill ans you can see river carvings- and the latter is a gorgeous little temple made of pink stone.You can hire a tuktuk or car, You can go to Phnom Kulen - the sacred mountain, and bathe in the waterfall and look at gorgeous Angkorian sites. If you have the time,you may want to visit Beng Melea- an overgrown temple.You cn also visit the Roluos temples.ORRRRYou can volunteer at a soup kitchen. PM me if you want to do this cos I have contacts.I cannot stress to you how fun it is to cycle around SR. You get to really capture the sights, sounds and smells of the town, especially if you leave the beaten track. Love going to SR and will be back there again soon.
