The morning drizzle. The rain-washed willow tree. All set the scene for the parting moment. One last toast before the traveller set off on the journey on his own. The sadness in parting in this poem has inspired many tunes over the generation and even a composition for the Guqin (string instrument). In this wine poem he urges all to enjoy one’s youthfulness to the day or seize the day (carpe diem). His personality traits and poetry style often described as carefree, uninhibited, and maybe even swashbuckling are evident here. He is well known for the Saint Seiya series. But his most famous tune to Chinese is the theme song for the Sangokushi (三国志) trilogy or Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In this untitled poem, he made elegant references to nature to convey a sense of melancholy on the difficulty in meeting and parting of the ill-fated lovers: the feeble East Wind and withered flowers; the silkworm spinning its last strand of silk till death; and the candle shedding its last drip of tear until it melted completely. He Zhan Hao (何占豪) who is credited for the composition of the Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto (梁祝小提琴协奏曲) wrote a Erhu Concerto for this poem. This Red Bean Poem from the Dream of the Red Chamber expresses the inconsolable longing of the protagonist, Jia Bao Yu for his love interest. Here are three different versions of the song. In the second part of the poem, he paints what will become of him after the parting. Like all farewell, it will be heart-breaking, what’s more with the cold autumn wind blowing. After setting forth on my boat, where will I find myself tonight after getting drunk and sobering up, he asks? I will only have the willows-lined bank, crescent moon, and the morning breeze to accompany me on my way... It is also the Chinese Valentine’s Day in the old days as couples will be out enjoying the occasion on this full moon night. This poem is about a lady who is out on her own on this day. But what a difference a year makes. Bright-lit lanterns adorning the street. Fireworks bursting into the sky. Horse-carts packing the road. Smell of perfume in the air. Sound of joyous music and laughter. Amid the hustle and bustle, he has been searching for her in the crowd to no avail. Then out of the sudden when he turns around, there she is in a dimly lit corner.
