1)To answer your questions, "A Man Called Hero" is based on a HK comic series dated many years ago. It was adapted as a drama series b/4 in HK and shown in S'pore many years ago.

2)From what I remember, Shadow's daughter is not Hero's daughter. Hero's daughter was raised by some evil cult and thus was evil and later fought with his father. (Seems that her fate clashes wuth her father's)

3)Don't know got sequel or not. Hopefully not because I find it unnatural to show fanciful fighting in a modern setting. Prefer in ancient china like last year's "Wind&Cloud".

4)Shadow's history : He had done some wrong in the past and his arms were cut off. He was saved by Hero's teacher and thus in gratitute, served him (later Hero). No arms thus he perfected his legs(movement and kick)and his hair whip. His mask is not b cause of being cool but because he is ashamed of seeing others or he don't want his enemies to find him.

5)We laugh when Hero jumped because it is too artifical. His jumping is like a grasshopper with no gracefulness at all. Also it looks like being copied from some DC superheroes flying. Martial artists may have good "qinggong" (body-lightening techniqu s), thus they can move/jump faster (or glide a bit) but they don't fly so high. In one scene, Hero seemed to fly to the moon.

6)I also like this type of movie. But the trend seems to concentrate too much on artifical lighting/lasers. Chinese martial arts do produce "qi" - a kind of energy. But it is not some kind of visible light. The water/sword battle is great because it s ows the "qi" manipulating the water. Another classic method of showing "qi" in some other movies are leaves being controlled by "qi" to hit others. My own inspiration is to fight in a foggy night where all "qi" will be visible.

I just watched "The Man Called Hero" and I have a few questions. Some of them might not be suitable for this bulletin board, but I'm not really sure who else to ask.

Admittedly, I'm biased - I only like watching chinese fantasy movies, like those Tsui Hark ones where everyone's got these super giant magic weapons, or else they have martial arts that let them shoot laser beams and fire and stuff, so I'm definitely in f vour of fantasy.

A little disclaimer is due here, before I start: I don't listen to Mandopop myself, so don't go getting all in my face about it.

I do, however, agree with marlbroman when he points out that too much of pop music is based on looks ... but you know, it's not limited to chinese pop music.

These days, anytime you want to be a public figure, you've got to look good - people are superficial (and yes, I generalise broadly). We don't choose our friends by their looks, but appearance is often the criteria for a lot of other decisions we make ... P> Sometimes I wonder if gay men suffer from this more than most. Lesbians generally understand that there's more to a relationship than looks, but I suspect that is a woman thing - they're the ones who feel trapped and/or pressured by society into looking a certain way, so they rebel against it.

Gay men, on the other hand - we revel in the whole appearance thing, and so we buy clothes that are tighter than tight, and we go to the gym, and so on and so forth. You'd be surprised at how little attention I get because I'm NOT a typical lithe musclebo nd gayboy.
