Gruesome Tv Ad

Recommended Posts

Some parents have been complaining about the gruesome anti-smoking tv ad where it featured a gaunt and rotting face of a female smoker (like a ghost except with bad makeup). The ad is giving their kids nightmare. I have to agree with them that the timing when the ad is shown is off. I felt queasy a bit as I watched it last night during dinner and had to put down my chicken wing for a while. I just lost my appetite.

Agreed with you ED, I saw the ads looks so gruesome :yuk: . I thought at the beginning looks like film preview of ghost story but at the end actually anti-smoking campaign

Aiya, after a while, people will get 'immuned' to the shock effect. When the horrible pix appeared on the cigarette cover, everyone was shocked. Now, the shock effect is probably minimal to say the least.

Should just forgo the tax on cigarettes and ban it like chewing gum lah... problem solved.

Duties on cigarettes and liquor is is important to Singapore. That is where a substantial amount of revenue comes in.

If you ban cigarettes and/or liquor, where are you going to find the same amount of revenue to replace the loss?

Since Singapore is a duty free country (meaning almost all imports/exports are exempted from tax, unlike US or Europe), then the obvious means to replace the lost revenue is by increasing taxes like Road Tax, Income Tax, GST, Stamp Duty, etc.

This means that our cost of living will increase. Can you imagine paying 25% for GST? Or 40% for Income Tax? Or even 300% of what you are paying now for Road Tax?

Let's face it. Cigarettes and liquor are Singapore's necessary evil.

One thing Singaporeans should quit is hounding smokers.

If you don't like passive smoke, don't bloody stand near people who are puffing away lah.

EVERYONE has an unhealthy habit and let's face it, almost all unhealthy habits affect people around you one way of the other.

And when I say unhealthy, I mean in general, not physically.

I mean, we don't blow smoke in your face on purpose do we?

No...kids should watch it. It is meant to be scary so that the image will haunt them against ever taking up smoking. Gruesome...Yes... but it's for their own good!

Parents who shelter their little darlings from the facts are even more disgusting than the advert. They will think otherwise come the day when their kids decide to take up the habit.

I really dont think it should be shown at all. Where do we draw the line then? And what's next?? Showing bloody maimed body of dead or injured people to scare people into observing good traffic rules? What about showing disease people with VD with warts and all to scare people against being promiscuous?? Show these ads during dinner time so that the kids will learn when they are young- doesnt matter if they dont understand. Just scare them anyway 'in case their kids decide to take up the habit' in future.

Hahaha  .... maybe the ads should put x-rated and no children allowed to watch if they air the ads at late night

what's the worst TV ads, those that generate no interest nor comments.

for that this latest anti-smoking ads is successful, it let pple starting to discuss abt smoking and bring awareness on the potential danger.

where do we draw the line? no one knows where the line to begin with. basically public opinions are never that clear on many things in the 1st place.

take gambling as example, it is never protray as good and recently a mahjong event was banned as it preceived as encouraging gambling. and yet if you look at the TV programs, many game shows are actually gambling in nature, take the old nkf charity where every phone call is a lucky draw.

now where do we draw the line?

i think majority wins, if the majority are smokers, there won't be such ads even if it's still correct in content.. now coz smokers are minority, so there are bans and advertisements .

The smokers are now having hard time, so expensive its price due to taxes, very limited public areas be allowed to smoke, even hawker centre only at certain corner, all cigarette packets covered with gruesome pic and warning, long-haul flight can't even smoke and so many other restrictions ........ luckily I stop smoking already and now just enjoy to put other 'cigar' in my mouth

Singapore adverts is so boring, there is too much restrictions and not much originality. I think the smoking ad is quite good as it makes an impression and it delivers the message across. Perhaps most Singaporean will rather prefer the conventional advert on how the smoker will affects his family which has been shown repeatedly over the years

Now the so called gruesome ads for anti-smoking campaign can be seen all over the bus stops.

Just wondering whether the female photo in the ads was a really true picture of which she suffered from the throat cancer or just make-up photo?

I got two magic words for you, WA, that is- makeup + photoshop

Thanks. It was my guess too and just wanted to hear other opinions because it would be 'disrespectful' to cancer patients too by doing so

They could not find someone real who suffered from such real symptoms. So they have to resort to makeup and photoshop.
