(not sounding offensive), I have always wondered how many out there who are in the 1950s to actually adopted to technology in this fast paced world (*Think pads). Mum still doesn't want to know how to SMS (partially don't know how to pinyin), and Dad doesn't want to learn how to use the DVD player. Is it a fear of technology or simply there's no need to adopt in the first place?I'm born in the 80s and I can live without my mobile phone. I can't say the same for many out there. Neither can I understand why people rush out to buy the latest non-working gadget (no flash, drains battery, enormous data roaming bills etc). passinthenight Posted January 3, 2012 Report Share Posted January 3, 2012 When I left school and I was successful in gaining employment for the very 1st time, I was notified by telegram.I started work in early in 1978, and by 1979, the Company I was working for, started operating with computer technology, from manual procedures.(I was still a teenager then). Back then my gross weekly pay was $100.00 and I couldn't afford a home phone line so I had to use the public phone box to call in sick. Since then the market has progressed to economical personal computers, in which even the common man can afford.Today, I live on the other side of the world from my mother. The crash i worked on was in PLA.....Biman bangladesh airline...we removed parts that can be sold.Was told they actually ran out of fuel to the engine it flamed out n with no power the plane could not sustain flight. Just lifted off then habis,Apparently the fuel supply valves at the engineers panel were in the off position...they had only had fuel in the lines till they run dry. raind Posted January 23, 2012 Report Share Posted January 23, 2012 (edited) since it's new year period, let me reminisc a little about chinese new years in the 60s/ 70s. the following are some points that i miss... going to tay ban guan to buy chinese new year clothes - only get to buy new clothes once a year! going to geylang serai to buy spices. the streets were lined with lots of mama shops where they grind all the different types of spices. could smell them miles away! going to geylang serai market to buy sarong for my mum and kueh dodol for the new year. watching adults make love letters using the old love letter maker (the one macam a pair of tongs with 2 round template) and we kids would run around and picking up the burned sides and eating them as the adults go about rolling the love letters watching adults make kueh bauhulu using the old kueh bauhulu templated burner and where we had to place red hot charcoal on the cover of the burner helping my mum with all the preparations as she made chap chye, curry chicken, steam chicken (we eat chicken no more than 3 times a year - chinese new year, celestial god's birthday, hungry ghost festival), kong bak, ngoh hiang... waking up on the first day of cny to streets and streets covered with red papers... these red papers were the left over of the chinese new year fire crackers, sparklers that we played with and that was litted when midnight struck the night before! going around hunting for "leftovers"/ unexploded fire crackers, collecting them and lighting them with a joss stick when i reached home subsequently when we stopped having firecrackers, we would gather in front of the tv in the morning at 9.30 to watch chingay procession at the padang. my favourite was always to lion dance and dragon dances at the end of the chingay. going to the sheng hong kong temple at tai seng village to pray for good luck (the temple had since been shifted to arumugam road and tai seng is now a semi-industrial estate) having to kneel down to my grandparents with 2 oranges and wishing them "happy new year and umur panjang panjang" collecting ang pows (at that time, the ang pows i get range from 2 kwa chee/ sweets, to 20cents to max 50 cents) having to visit all my relatives on the first day of new year (the cab fare starts at 60cents) the whole festive mood lasted through to the 8th day of chinese new year where the whole village celebrate the tian gong birthday. lots of sugar canes, chicken, etc... :-) Edited January 23, 2012 by raind Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Watched them kill live snakes, skin them... watched (YUCKS) Live Turtles (actually they are called Tarapin?) for turtle soup...The same 3 streets had (now still can find one) cha kia maker... we used to go make a few pairs every Chinese New Year preparation... throw away the old pair... (quite worn out leow of course)Was it Smith Street? the two coffee shops where taxi drivers will go at 4.30 am to eat tim sum... one siew mai is the size of a small boy's fist!!! HUGE... and one dai pao... you probably cannot finish on your own... usually workers go there to eat before heading out to work... so it's worker's size... damn big... not like those 'dainty dim sum' you see today...Kallang River in the 70s was poison water ... dead pigs, chickens, and other animals float down the river regularly - even dead people - children who drowned while playing upstream... and rubbish was thrown there conveniently...it's a very good thing ... the clean rivers act... else you will be smelling the rivers daily when low tide... Used to play hide-and-seek among the clothes rack while my mom and aunties did their shopping. Then behind the emporium was a Hawker Centre called Hollywood (or was it the cinema). Satay was 10 cent per stick. The seller had his son and daughter playing around the stall. Later, they would help with the grilling when they were in their teens. Ah...memories.Used to live in a kamping in Lorong Tai Seng. There was a flood once when I was in kindergarten. Give us the opportunity to meet people we would not usually meet in such social situations and at the same time, gets us out of the house. abang Posted January 24, 2012 Report Share Posted January 24, 2012 Perhaps to my brothers born in the 60s, go to these museums today.FREE ADMISSION on 24 Jan 2012 and 28 Jan 2012.I had a field day yesterday - on the first day of CNY.I started the day at the 清明上河图 at the Expo Hall 3.It was an interesting exhibition, previously seen at the China pavilion at 2010 World Expo.The moving masterpiece was a real treat.Next I took the MRT to Dhoby Ghaut for the National Museum.The exhibits from Musee d'Orsay charmed the wits out of me.It was a very well-organised exhibition.Last but not least, I walked to the Sub-station/Pernakan Museum.It was the very first time that i stepped into this museum.I was fascinated by the rich culture and the intricate designs of the sarong kebaya. Some of my older cousins are either showing sign of dementia, talking about medical check up and results, aching on the backs/necks etc. Once I was a kid, envied my older cousin as she stayed in this big bungalow. Now all these have no meaning to her because she lost her apetite and just hope to get back to normal.When she and her husband were rich and famous (a popular place for family to go and play), they had visitors so many during CNY that they need to set up a big tent at the garden. Now it is just quiet.As we age, I just pray that we still have friends from all walks of life and all ages. We shouldn't just stick to one group of friends or being selective. To many youg gay friends, yes, born in this new century to be able to freely express yourself is great. Saw many friend seeking ad asking " you must be handsome or fit or ..." Will the physique going to last? Say an after work jog alround Marina Bay, table tennis, or fusball, or something similar? if the 197x to 199x can have their own thing, why shouldn't we? Make it a 195x - 196x only activity. Give us the opportunity to meet people we would not usually meet in such social situations and at the same time, gets us out of the house. If anyone is interested, message me privately and we can plan and make arrangements. Wonderful :-) better set some ground rules tho... this is NOT a meet for hookup session... (well I'm not looking ot hookup at least...)Just a get together of matured and hopetully fun loving gentlemen in a common activity such as tea appreciation, or wine appreciation, or combo cycling/photography at Punggol PCN - the place is lovely btw... ) or overnight fishing at the said Punggol PCN... tentage no problem, small portable BBQ pit also no problem haha... erm what happens in the 3-4men tent after sun sets... erm so long as no screaming and lights-out... justme3212 Posted February 3, 2012 Report Share Posted February 3, 2012 Perhaps to my brothers born in the 60s, go to these museums today.FREE ADMISSION on 24 Jan 2012 and 28 Jan 2012.I had a field day yesterday - on the first day of CNY.I started the day at the 清明上河图 at the Expo Hall 3.It was an interesting exhibition, previously seen at the China pavilion at 2010 World Expo.The moving masterpiece was a real treat.Next I took the MRT to Dhoby Ghaut for the National Museum.The exhibits from Musee d'Orsay charmed the wits out of me.It was a very well-organised exhibition.Last but not least, I walked to the Sub-station/Pernakan Museum.It was the very first time that i stepped into this museum.I was fascinated by the rich culture and the intricate designs of the sarong kebaya.
